Disability is a scam

by sunscam on May 14, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

After having a disability with my company the Sun Life agent told me I could carry it on after employment but never explained to me that the coverage changed to something different. I was expected to know their insurance naming scheme and I ended up with critical illness insurance at triple the cost it should have been. Once I was ill and could not work I found out that my 9 years of insurance premiums amounted to nothing and it was just a scam. Do not do business with them.

Medical coverage from work

by Chris van Beek on May 12, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

Sun Life does not care about people with disabilities. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis after having been registered with their extended medical coverage and every time I need medication coverage all they do is harass me with forms to fill out and government programs they mandate I be on while threatening to take away the medication that I need to function. All the while collecting my money from premiums. They don't even read the filled out forms correctly and will cut off necessary medications that prolong my quality of life because of their lack of reading comprehension abilities. Sun Life gets a 0/10 for me and I recommend everyone avoid them at all costs.

Poor customer service

by Anjali on Nov 19, 2019

I have a very bad experience with this Sun Life. I am 7 months pregnant and had an accident. Due to this, I have severe pain on my lower back and upper back. Since I am pregnant, physio can't do much on my back. So my doctor said I should not go to work since. This pain can go really bad and has a risk to a baby's life too. Sun Life said: no, you can go to work and they won't pay me. It looks like they more than a doctor. Terrible company to deal with. Worst customer service.

Scam Insurance Company

by ClassAction on Nov 5, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

This company is sneaky and does all sorts of avoidance games to not pay costs for health care, DO NOT invest with this company! Stress leave: When my short term stress leave ran out from employer's contribution, Sun Life kept putting off approving my long term stress leave for months, knowing full well I had no paycheques. They basically 'starve' you out for months, until you are forced to go back to work, even though you are not medically ready yet. Circumcision for my child: Sun Life told me they would cover the costs of circumcision for my child, so I got the procedure done for $1300.00. Then they denied the claim after I submitted the receipt. They will play the game of - "who told you that and on what date?"

Screw up

by YouWillPayUP on Jun 28, 2019

In 2016, I applied and was approved for Disability Insurance through my Scotia Bank Mortgage account. In 2018, the doctor put me on Disability Leave. When I went to access my Disability Insurance for my mortgage, I was notified that they made an error and ticked off Chronic Insurance instead of Disability Insurance. They assured me that the correction would be made. Months later, instead of correcting the error, they paid me out what I had paid towards the Chronic Insurance and basically refused to help me! I contacted the Office of the President of Nova-Scotia Bank to complain. They investigated the matter but it took months. Finally, I told the Office of the President that I would go see a lawyer and within a week, SunLife acknowledged their mistake and paid me out a portion. Now my Mortgage is in foreclosure due to receiving their payment too little too late, and they didn't even pay the hardship or the financial burden that they caused. Two thumbs down to them!

stressful (Disability)

Okay. Let's get things straight here, I would give a 0/5 for Sun Life in the disability sector. 3/5 to the group benefits. I have been off work due to what I have found out is bad ADHD and a myriad of anxiety disorders that I have been dealing with my whole life, and things have started to go extremely bad aka, almost suicide... I have been doing my due diligence with going to my appointments etc. waiting. Going to more appointments. Until I have finally gotten to see my psychiatrist today. When I first applied and got accepted for my disability claim. It took 3 weeks to get anything done. It took two weeks for my case manager to get a hold of me and confirm. Then after that. It took a week for my claim amount and dates to process. Then somehow a whole week to mail me a check... second time I applied for an extension. It took another 3 weeks to get any money. It is extremely difficult to get a hold of any case manager. As for some reason they aren't actually ever in their office. Why? I do not know. This is a benefits company. You are supposed to be helping people who are disabled or in need of help. These people need quick service. Not a lot of people have a whole months worth of savings to back themselves on to these days. May I mention, we also pay into this. So it is basically our money, to begin with, okay? So I have been diagnosed with bad ADHD and three other anxiety disorders along with a stress disorder. So my fiance and I were not able to pay rent due to 3-week delays, which happened twice now. I have been evaluated and strictly told to take 3 months off work for new medication and a strict plan ordered by the psychiatrist. I have left 4 messages in the last 3 days trying to get a hold of a case manager, to avoid the previous almost month-long delays. It is absolutely ridiculous, unprofessional and stressful. Sun Life financial should be stripped of their licenses and removed from the insurance business. People need money when they are not working. Unbelievably horrible service from this company and I am appalled my company uses them for their insurance and benefits. I could go on all day about the bad experiences I've had with Sun Life. But this will have to do. If someone high up in Sun Life reads this on some off chance. There needs to be some changes

LTD

by Bewildered on Nov 1, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I would not even give them 1 star, but I had to submit this. I applied to LTD and it was a nightmare from the start. I have paid into this for 12 years and I was warned when applying that they review to deny. My claim was for acute anxiety, stress and physical/health issues and in the end, I was told it was "due to reasons of a personal nature rather than an illness or injury" even though I had a 3-page letter from a psychologist stating otherwise and a 5-page signed note from my doctor. I had to do a personal interview on the phone, which was a joke. I should have declined the interview. It made me feel like a victim and only caused me more undue stress. They are not there for our health. How is a claim denied with signed documents from doctors? I looked into suing them and had a lawyer set up, who wanted to pursue it but I have opted to step away for now. You can google search this to find lawyers who specifically deal with denied claims. I cannot put who I found, but they are there if you require additional help to pursue your claim.

AVOID SUN LIFE

by Giselle2018 on Sep 5, 2018

AVOID THIS COMPANY. I’ve been paying into my benefits, you’d think the least they can do is take a phone call from me and give me some information on my claim. I’ve been in the process of filing a disability claim for almost a month now and all I’m trying to do is check the status (when I should be receiving money as I’ve been off of work now for over a month due to high-risk pregnancy) and every time I call, someone tells me they can’t access my information because my file is handled in another office and I’m tired of being transferred over there to a voicemail. The same number that I’ve called twice before and was able to speak to someone who was able to access my file is the same number I’m calling again and it’s taking me all over Ontario and no one can access my information. Does Vancouver not have a customer service centre with people who actually pick up the phone like Waterloo or Toronto or Halifax or Montreal does?? Every time I’m transferred to Vancouver, I’m forwarded to a voicemail. This is so ridiculous I’ve never experienced this before, this is the WORST customer service and everyone I speak to is telling me something different. I don’t even know why my file is being handled in Vancouver when I live in Toronto. They even have an online option where you can “track your claim” and every time I go to look, it shows me that I supposedly haven’t filed a claim in the last 90 days. When I finish sorting this out, I'm CANCELLING and switching somewhere better, this is a disgusting service. Been off of work for so long and I’m due in 3 weeks and I can’t even enjoy a peace of mind like these insurance companies claim to give you whenever you need your.... behind.... covered. 0 STARS. I’m leaving this review anywhere I can so people can avoid this stress.

LTD Coverage DENIED

by ToyotaKid on Apr 21, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

After dealing with a serious cardiac issue, and returning to work before the end of my Short-term benefits, I have since been hospitalized TWICE for the same condition. Now that I will be looking to use LTD for a short time until I'm able to return to work, Sun Life delayed and stalled for a month after being sent all the information from my Dr as requested. After a month of delays and no income, my "rep" decided to pass my file to their "Health Partner" (AKA: A Doctor they pay to deny claims) for review. This so-called "partner" OVERRULED my Doctor and Cardiologists findings and have denied my coverage. I am not well enough to return to work yet, as my Dr indicated, and now over 2 months later, I am still in the "appeals" process. No income, for 3 months, maxed out CC's, used all my savings to survive...And still no resolution. This is a very common game they play... Stall and delay and bully you until you're unable to remain off work any longer due to financial pressures, regardless of your health. I have 8 co-workers who have had to retain a lawyer in order to receive BENEFITS THAT YOU PAY FOR. How this company hasn't been sued out of existence is beyond me. They are immoral and unsympathetic, and their "customer service" is absolutely appalling. ZERO STARS

Disgusted and Confused

by DisappointedCustomer on Apr 10, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I only have Sun Life because of the company I work for. I had surgery and I submitted ALL necessary COMPLETED paperwork back in Feb. I had surgery in March and it is now April and I STILL have not received my disability. Sun Life claim to have needed info from me that they already had in file. They told me it would take 5 days to have my claim assigned. I called 4 days later and my claim still had not been assigned! They're saying they dropped the ball and it will take another 5 days to be assigned and additional time to have my claim approved so I can finally receive my benefits. By the time I receive my benefits, I will be back at work. I can not begin to explain how disappointed and disgusted I am with this company. My disability is my only form of income while I'm out of work and they're basically telling me there is nothing I can do about it even though they dropped the ball! This is absurd and Sun Life should be investigated! I'm committed to exploring every outside option I can to have them take responsibility for their actions. If an individual pay monthly for your insurance, you should at least have the decency to pay out in a timely efficient manner! Shame on you Sun Life!
