Worst Customer Service EVER

by thoroughlyunhappy on Mar 7, 2017
1.5 out of 5 stars

It started out great but quickly went downhill. The customer service was horrible - getting answers from my agent of his assistant was like pulling teeth. And when I called the 1-800/1-877 numbers, they were no help either. Every month I'd get a notice in the mail saying my monthly amount changed, and there would be no heads up or explanation as to why. I would contact my agent and he would give me roundabout answers that didn't actually answer anything. At one point he promised the monthly rate wouldn't change until my renewal date, and sure enough the following month I received another rate change notification. Unbelievable. When I cancelled my policy I received a bill for an outstanding balance. Do you think this notification would tell me what the charges were for? NO! So once again, I emailed my agent to ask for details around the charge - what was it for, how was it calculated, etc. His answer was just that it was a cancellation fee for cancelling before my renewal date. I couldn't find any documentation or literature outlining a cancellation fee, so I inquired about that and the assistant's response was "there's always a cancellation fee" - wow, thanks for your help - useless! All I ever wanted, was information regarding my payments - I don't make payments blindly and would like to know what I'm being charged for. Is that too much to ask? Cancelling State Farm is the best decision my husband and I made. Stay away! For reference, our agent was located in Guelph, ON

state farm is a money grab

The customer service is terrible. Wendy D, a claim representative, was so mean to me. I had to reassure her that I am calling on behalf of my money and not her attitude. Paul W, he is also a big harassment since I've had State Farm's insurance. When you call to speak to someone, you have to go through 12 people before ending up in the right department. And half of the phone staff isn't educated about anything else except what's in their department. Pathetic and great teamwork, State Farm. The staff is awful and the demands are very threatening and not appreciated. They harass customers for money as well. And the employees talk to u like you owe them.

Tired of arbitrary increases

by MC on Mar 1, 2017

I have been with State Farm for over 4 years now. The first 2 were awesome. Excellent service, never an increase in premiums, etc. In the past 2 years, my auto policy, which renews every 6 months has been subject to constant increases in price. My record is stellar and I receive increases of 5-15$ every time my policy renews. I have been asking my agent why for a year now and she never has answers for me other than "that's the price in Ontario, it fluctuates all the time". What kind of answer is that? Because none of my family or friends have that problem. To make the matter worse, I was told I would get a discount at 3 years of loyalty. But at 3 years, my insurance was up 5$ a month so when I contacted my agent, she said I got a 20$ a month discount but that the coverage was now up 25$ for renewal. Anyway. I got tired of it and went with my husband's company. The constant fluctuation is too much for me. I want to be rewarded for my good driving, not taken advantage of. My premiums went from 142$ to 96$ for the same coverage. My husband's insurance has done nothing other than dropping in prices over the years. I cannot get that with Certas.

I did have a really good claim experience for tenant insurance before with them so I cannot say their service is overall that bad. They did low ball and nickle and dime but so do all companies.

Verdict: Please be wise with your shopping. Get yourself a broker for insurance if you must. You will pay less elsewhere guaranteed with the same level of customer service. It is no longer State Farm and stellar service. It's now Certas Desjardins and they do not have a good reputation, keep that in mind.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Treated like trash and bum.

Insurance company says, it's my problem about my car being vandalized - old Chevrolet.
They said, the car is a write-off because of paint scratches on the car. Then they cancelled my rental without notice and said I got to drive to aurora, ontario today at 3 pm for the investigation of claim and it's without prejudice. Really, how is that possible? They seem to think they can push me around because I'm native Indian and say my car was my fault for parking it there. Excuse me, if that's the case -what’s a safe place to park car? My car, it’s a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. And I loved that car so much… They seem to think a crippled man such as myself would exert all the energy and walk around my car or wreck it myself because of where I live and they already passed judgement against my race and treated me like I was in a line-up for a welfare check. I really recommend to anyone who is thinking about State Farm to reconsider. They are bad racial and treat you like scum because we need them and they don't need us, only our money... They told me they are insurance giants and untouchable… Well, I got news for them - I'm actually going to record the interview of investigation and place it live on Facebook and Youtube… For every one. Because I was also told they record all conversations and can edit and stop the recordings for their benefits . All these agents from State Farm in Whitby, Ontario and all of Durham region are only out to take your hard earned money and don't care about you personally as a human… They treat you like royalty until the policy is paid, then they walk all over you. Ask any one who was denied claim... I'm actually a cancer patient forced to live on healthcare coverage with fixed income.. Their agents who don't care and should have licence taken away as well Anne Marie H., from 126 Byron at North Whitby. Talk to them with accent and say you are a new citizen and see the prejudice.. and then call back with perfect English... You will see... They feed on the foreign people especially when I said I was native. Really I don't think that’s humane. It's cruel and dirty. If I'm their friend I get great rates and free advice. If I am not their friend, I get no help, no phone calls returned ever and constant voice messages...

Worst company

by wethenorth on Jan 27, 2017
1.5 out of 5 stars

Had a bad experience when I tried to put my car in storage and keeping only fire and theft coverage. Since state farm is bought out by Certas insurance, their new guideline does not allow customers to delete collision and liability insurance when putting a car in storage. I was told that I would only save $12 off my $149 monthly premium. My friend is only paying $7/month for putting his car in storage with another insurance company. It makes no sense because my car sits in my garage at home and I am not driving it! The risk is reduced significantly but the premium is not. This is totally an unfair practice just to keep to make the insurance company money. I am forced to keep my collision and liability coverage because" if I get hit by another car as a pedestrian or passenger, I am covered by my auto policy"...that's complete BS. I will be covered first by my own health and disability insurance through work (it precedes my auto policy according to state farm's policy). I can also access the other driver's liability insurance. Why do I need to pay state farm to cover me? what risk are they covering? worst company ever. The agent's assistant even told me "no one will be able to help you. there is no phone number you can call". Will never recommend this company. I am going to recommend family and friends to switch company too if they are insured with state farm.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Not good at all

From the very beginning this company, sitting in person and on the phone, refused to answer my questions, gave me a quote that was not the actual monthly amount, and had the worst customer service when trying to clarify the increase in monthly charges. The paper statement with both vehicles on it was hard to understand. The agent ignored my questions repeatedly about why I need to be rated and why they need my current policy number and insurance company to remove me as a secondary driver. I'm so angry right now I can't even type well. DO NOT (and i ignored other peoples warnings because I thought maybe it was just them) Do NOT get your policies with State Farm! Stay away from the Barrie, ON branch!

What was good is now gone

Worst company by far. I went to State Farm in 2012 because I had a sports bike and it offered reasonable rates for bikes. The vehicle insurance was a bit more then i was paying but it was worth it at the time. Over the years and especially after Dejardins/Certas took over, rates just increased arbitrarily and service went in the hole. The once great service provided I though was a great agent ,quickly defended the companies actions and left me in the dust. I asked several times through emails to explain what i was paying for and why it was skyrocketing, and received emails saying they really don't know why, they have no one to answer the questions, they cannot give out head office contact, and that I would just have to pay the rates applied. I went back in forth trying to negotiate a better rate and told them I would be shopping around, and the answer was still the same, with my option to cancel. I did cancel and went back to my previous company ( The Personal) where I'm getting twice the insurance coverage on my vehicles and pay about $500 less a year. To End this horrible experience, I just received my renewal notice for my bike with "state farm" (who in fact isn't even state farm) and the fee for this year is $1650, compared to last years $900..... but remember they don't know why.. they don't know how rates are charge, they just make you pay.

Another thing... get some staff with some interpersonal skills... staff that knows how to deal with people, answer questions and rant afraid of the occasional disagreement... i was tossed around 4-5 different agents...

I will be file a BBB complaint, but i still need the insurance untill this friday... SO CLOSE.

They are incapable of contacting their own client's, what does indicate about there competency of the company?

I believe all insurance company's are the same, Since insurance is a legal requirement there is no need for them to be anything other than a warm body in front of a computer.

Can we rate them less than 1 star as that would be an accurate rating.

anything but StateFarm

After 10 years with StateFarm with all family cars + house + life we are leaving and never going back. Enough. It is not a StateFarm as we use to, it is Certas now and it is terrible. Just as one example: it may only be insurance company where you cannot reach an agent, we had about 10 days, numerous voicemails and they (agent office ~5 people) never call back!!! To make it better StateFarm does not provide any other contact (unless it is a claim), everything must go through the agent and agent is not answering! Ok, it is only one example and we had more and more of that. On the other side bills rocketing up non-stop. Every time it is more to pay. Pay for what? We are fed up and cannot even say “good bye StateFarm” because nothing is good as it was.
