Absolutely done with them

We have been a loyal customer of theirs for the last 20 years. In all that time our rates have always increased every year. It's absolutely ridiculous how much we pay today. Their customer service is atrocious. I recently put through a claim due to an accident that was not my fault. A spare time from an oncoming car rolled through the front end of my vehicle causing serious damage. After the car was repaired and the claim closed, my local service center discovered my front tie rod was loose. The exact point of impact from my accident. However, Johnsons refused to open the claim and re-evaluate it. And the claim adjuster never called me back after several attempts to reach her. We will be switching away immediately. And possibly take a penalty just to be done with it for good. Stay away from this company!!!

-4.5% Rates ?? Post yours!!

I am hoping some consumers here can share their actual monthly premiums from month to month to illustrate a point.

Recently, the Ontario government mandated that insurance providers reduce auto insurance rates for consumers. Please see the document link below from FSCO (Financial Services Commission of Ontario).

According to this document, Johnson Insurance (Unifund Assurance Company) has agreed to reduce passenger automobile insurance rates by -4.49% for the first quarter of 2016 (for effective consumer rates as of June 1, 2016).

https://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/en/auto/rates/Pages/q1-2016.aspx

According to my bank debit statements, for my two vehicles and home, here are my premiums by month with month-to-month increase/decrease in percentage terms:

PERIOD PREMIUM % INCREASE or DECREASE
SEP 2015 - NOV 2015 = $225.43
DEC 2015 - FEB 2016 = $225.02 -0.2 %
MAR 2016 - JUL 2016 = $227.29 +1.0 %
AUG 2016 = $259.86 +14.33 %
SEP 2016 = $242.91 -6.98%

As the premiums show, for almost one year , or 11 months, my premiums actually only rose 0.8% (+1.0 - 0.2%) from a rate of $225.43 to $227.29.

Then, inexplicably, from July 2016 to Aug 2016 my rates increased for ONE MONTH only by +14.33% and then DECREASED by -6.98%.

Throughout this entire time, my rates were the same in 3 and 5 month blocks and only changed by factors of 0.2% to 1.0%.

I have not had any accidents, or tickets, or made any claim whatsoever on my home insurance during this time.

My suggestion is that Johnson has arbitrarily increased rates recently 'on paper' and then made it 'appear' as though I received a 6.98% discount on my insurance rates, which would fulfill Johnson's promise to reduce (per FSCO) their rates by a MINIMUM of 4.49%.

I would be interested in other consumers experience with their rates in the recent past in light of my observations.

Signed,
Frustrated Johnson Customer

I went to Johnson Offices today tried to pay my Bill 1 place being New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada and the other place was Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada - they have a stupid Policy of not taking cash no more. Please do not deal with the them, they do have a poor service ...I last thought Money is legal tender in Canada - they did not want to take my cash payment. Johnson's what a joke I will go else where with better service even it cost more.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Overpriced/Nonexistent service

I have been insured by Unifund through Johnson for over ten years. This April, my car war rear-ended. Clearly the other driver's fault. Didn't get to speak with the adjuster once, even after numerous phone calls. Just got the renewal in the mail for 2016-17 - nice juicy increase. So, did my mystery adjuster somehow charge part or all of the repair to my policy? I'll probably never know. So, now it's a choice of shop for another insurer or keep taking it up the tailpipe from Johnson / Unifund.

Loyalty is NOT rewarded

I've been a loyal customer of Johnson Insurance for nearly 20 years. I've had two cars and my house insured during that time, and neither my wife or I ever made a claim. In the past two years, my wife had run into some bad luck and was in two accidents, both deemed at fault. We were told that she would now be considered high-risk, and so I waited to hear from them how my rates would be affected.
I get a call and an email yesterday informing me that they would not renew my auto insurance. This was fine by me because my intent was to not renew either, and decided also to cancel my home insurance.
I called to get a quote from a local broker, and expected to pay significantly more. Even with full disclosure, they came back, my wife now high-risk insured, at $12 cheaper per month than my regular rate with Johnson!
So not only am I saving money, I've been getting gouged for years! I hope this post gets read by customers and others before it gets removed, so that you can save yourself some money and hassle by just going to another company. My biggest regret is not shopping around sooner, but my fault for thinking that loyalty would be rewarded.

Hidden cancellation fees

Called them for a quote for a newer vehicle we purchased. Very high price. Asked them if the could do any better since we had been with them for many many years. They told me no. Found cheaper insurance by $800 same coverage. Called to cancel the vehicle insurance which they had to talk to myself and my husband. Found out then that there is a cancellation fee plus our house insurance jumped up $300.00. Asked to talk to a manager regarding the cancellation fee and they would not put me thru to one. Bully corporation and high robbery.

My husband has been with these guys for many years... we ended up finding a better rate and someone we could talk to in person. We called to cancel and asked if there is anything else we need to pay. She answered no. I now have a 1.73.53 cent bill and 2 bounced payment fees. Happy I got my husband out of this place! They will be getting it thrown right back.

Hidden Cancellation fees

Beware dealing with this company. We tried to leave for another insurance co that offered the same auto coverage for lower rates and Johnson charged an additional $180 in cancellation fees in order for us to cancel (more than 1 month of payments with only 5 months left on the policy). Belair Ins was $45 / month cheaper right up front, so I would suggest avoiding this company and dealing directly with Belair instead.

Scammers!

I can't even bring myself to assign even one star to this fly by night company. I was in an automobile accident last year. The other driver -- insured by Unifund -- was at fault. My insurance carrier (StateFarm) got the run around when trying to get Unifund to cover the cost of the emergency vehicles that were called to the scene of the accident. Unifund doesn't answer the phone and they don't return calls from the State Farm claims adjusters. Now I'm personally on the hook for paying over $400 to the county to cover the cost of the firetrucks showing up. If I don't pay, the county will turn my case over to a collection agency and my credit standing will be compromised.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Auto insurance claim nightmare

by Brutal Experience on Oct 8, 2015

Long story short. I had a mischief to my vehicle where someone cut into my ragtop roof. An adjuster came out and looked at it. He commented on the mint condition of the roof prior to the damage. It was taken to a dealership for replacement. The insurance company gave the ok for the fix, however against the advice from the dealership only ordered the roof without the liner. It had to come from out of country. Of course once the roof arrived it was confirmed that the liner was also needed. I was informed by the dealership that they had attempted to contact the insurance company on many occasions with negative results. I finally got a hold of the insurance company myself and advised them that the dealership was waiting. Then the dealership called me a day later stating they had a very interesting conversation with the company. The insurance company did not like the final cost evaluation from the dealership and began to barter with them. Of course the dealership advised them that the amount was set and agreed upon prior to work commencing. The work stalled until I called the dealership again and was advised they had not heard from the insurance company for the last week. AGAIN I called the insurance company and was told that they were not going to pay the amount the Dealership had described and I needed to take it to another place our pay the difference. At this point I am totally upset. I advised them I dont care where it gets fixed ...just get it done. Its been at the dealership for a month. Of course now they will have to pay the dealership for work done, and most likely have the vehicle towed to another place to have the work completed to save $1300. Of course by the time tow charges and dealership costs, and the cost of my rental vehicle for the last month, the $1300 dollars would be absorded already. Brutal customer service, and I will be changing companies asap.
