State Farm + Certas = DISASTER

by Soon to be EX Farm on Apr 25, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Since going to Certas, my experience with State Farm has continued to decline. My SF agents are great as always, but it seems that they too, are feeling the strain.

Rates have climbed, and for me (perfect record) are now about 30% more than the competition. The straw that broke the camel's back however is the fact that I can't pay on line nor can I even get to a website with my info on it. Folks, it's 2017 for crying out loud. On top of all that, I was late with a payment (I was out of the country when it came and didn't see the expected online notification because, guess what, there wasn't one) So they charged me 50 dollars to reinstate a policy.

Needless to say, I'm looking elsewhere, and you should be too.

Nothing but increases after the first year. Went from paying 125 in 2013. Just got a bill for may 2017 and now we're up to 284.25 for just my one car. If I could give a 0 star, I would. Going to switch asap!

Unpleasant experience

From the time we switched over to State Farm six months ago, there have been multiple errors. A policy number was assigned twice to the wrong vehicle resulting in denial of roadside assistance for my young daughter at night. She then had to hire her own tow truck and pay out of her pocket for it. This happened twice. The deductible amounts were created incorrectly and our premium amounts fluctuated constantly. Even a State Farm representative that we spoke to on one recent occasion told us that we had hung on for far longer than she would have. We are very disappointed in our service and will be going with another provider as soon as possible.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Worst Customer Service EVER

by thoroughlyunhappy on Mar 7, 2017

It started out great but quickly went downhill. The customer service was horrible - getting answers from my agent of his assistant was like pulling teeth. And when I called the 1-800/1-877 numbers, they were no help either. Every month I'd get a notice in the mail saying my monthly amount changed, and there would be no heads up or explanation as to why. I would contact my agent and he would give me roundabout answers that didn't actually answer anything. At one point he promised the monthly rate wouldn't change until my renewal date, and sure enough the following month I received another rate change notification. Unbelievable. When I cancelled my policy I received a bill for an outstanding balance. Do you think this notification would tell me what the charges were for? NO! So once again, I emailed my agent to ask for details around the charge - what was it for, how was it calculated, etc. His answer was just that it was a cancellation fee for cancelling before my renewal date. I couldn't find any documentation or literature outlining a cancellation fee, so I inquired about that and the assistant's response was "there's always a cancellation fee" - wow, thanks for your help - useless! All I ever wanted, was information regarding my payments - I don't make payments blindly and would like to know what I'm being charged for. Is that too much to ask? Cancelling State Farm is the best decision my husband and I made. Stay away! For reference, our agent was located in Guelph, ON

Tired of arbitrary increases

by MC on Mar 1, 2017

I have been with State Farm for over 4 years now. The first 2 were awesome. Excellent service, never an increase in premiums, etc. In the past 2 years, my auto policy, which renews every 6 months has been subject to constant increases in price. My record is stellar and I receive increases of 5-15$ every time my policy renews. I have been asking my agent why for a year now and she never has answers for me other than "that's the price in Ontario, it fluctuates all the time". What kind of answer is that? Because none of my family or friends have that problem. To make the matter worse, I was told I would get a discount at 3 years of loyalty. But at 3 years, my insurance was up 5$ a month so when I contacted my agent, she said I got a 20$ a month discount but that the coverage was now up 25$ for renewal. Anyway. I got tired of it and went with my husband's company. The constant fluctuation is too much for me. I want to be rewarded for my good driving, not taken advantage of. My premiums went from 142$ to 96$ for the same coverage. My husband's insurance has done nothing other than dropping in prices over the years. I cannot get that with Certas.

I did have a really good claim experience for tenant insurance before with them so I cannot say their service is overall that bad. They did low ball and nickle and dime but so do all companies.

Verdict: Please be wise with your shopping. Get yourself a broker for insurance if you must. You will pay less elsewhere guaranteed with the same level of customer service. It is no longer State Farm and stellar service. It's now Certas Desjardins and they do not have a good reputation, keep that in mind.

STAY AWAY!

by slugontharug on Mar 29, 2016

State Farm used to be great that is until they were sold to Desjardins. Now they are the worst out there! Customer service has noticeably been affected and is now terrible, they literally don't care how long you been with them or anything. Myself and my entire family were with them until my rates went up $40 a month even though I just turned 25 and use winter tires. My parents' insurance went up $30 a month and they put another vehicle on, a 2006 Honda Civic and they're paying $170 for it but were only paying $80 for a 1992 Civic last year (when it was still State Farm.) State Farm now claims it is more expensive to insure an older vehicle!!! 2006 is considered old but not just that, how are older cars more expensive to insure when there is less to them, parts are way cheaper and a lot of the safety is still on par to today's standards. This company is going under soon (at least I hope) and I have talked to people and read and you will see people everywhere are leaving State Farm. Do not make the mistake of joining a policy with them.

Tao I began to shop around for a better price and was then informed that State Farm had a at falt code on my record for an accident for others to see but when I got in touch with the again they said "oops we made a mistake "it's been there for 6yrs!!!
Long story short I cancelled!!

State Farm goes down the drain

by Jack of all trades on Mar 2, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

So it does my business with them. Been with them for 19 years, no claim, no accident, nothing, zero, zilch, nada. My car insurance premium just went up almost 15%. Accident free protection is not anymore included (an extra $60 yearly to buy). Asked my agent about all these. Answer: I know you have a stellar driving and claim-free record, but it's a new company, we changed ownership to Dejardins (that includes Certas). Alright, milk somebody else.

Went from great to awful

by Fed up on Jan 2, 2016

My family and i have been with state farm for years. Never a problem. However this last two years have been awful for me. I feel forced to leave the company that was once so good. Since certa became part or owners, nothing but mistakes that cost me. If my rate stayed the same month to month, i could budget. With out relying on these people. I called and asked for them to stop the auto pays. I never know when to money will actually come out. They refused. My bank tells me to close the account, and set up a new one. Why should i have to? I would have to change all my other accounts. I am very upset with the person i don't have a choice but to speak to at this company, absolutely useless and uncaring. The snippy comments and lack of empathy. Besides the auto pay issue, they cant get the communication with head office. OR it really is the incompetent office worker. I get bills sent saying the money is due a certain day. Then the money gets taken out whenever. Sometimes i try and pay back when the money is available and they take the payment for the car and put it toward my house?!? Why would i pay the damned house insurance for three months in advance when i had no |€|*[€| car insurance. I asked about it to the moron they have answering the phones at the office and was told they cant transfer the payment or refund me. The last thing that happened was they send me a notice, say i owed x amountp of dollars. On the date due they take DOUBLE. Or tried too. I had the amount in the account but not double. So boom bank hits me nsf charge. Same day, my mortage company tries to ding me for no fire insurance. Seems the company forgot to send the reinstatement to my mortgage company. So THEY tried to charge me for not having insurance. Again had gotten nsf charges. So 90 in charges from my bank because these arses wont even try anymore. I tried explaining. I am on a very limited budget. I need to know how much and when money is due. They wont work with me at all. Now i am shopping elsewhere. So will my family.

Arbitrary premium increases

by Justin on Oct 30, 2014
1.5 out of 5 stars

I am a Canadian, and was Statefarm's customer for four years. After having a bad experience with a rude, misleading agent at Allstate I was initially relieved to have such a friendly agent and such a great rate on auto insurance when I purchased a policy from Statefarm. After four years of doing business with Statefarm I got a letter in the mail stating that my premium was increasing by 15%, to nearly the same rate I was paying prior to receiving a discount when I reached the age of 25. The letter asked me to call them for further explanation. Since becoming a Statefarm customer I have not received any demerits on my license, made any claims, or had any at-fault accidents.

In preparation for my phone conversation with my agent I gathered some competitive quotes from around the web and called them asking what additional services they planned to offer me to account for the rate increase. The representative responded "none - your plan is the same but your rate is increasing." so I asked "if I give you an assortment of competitive quotes I've received will you price match, or would you prefer to lose my business?". The rep replied "I can't price match", so I have now ensured that my policy will not renew and have secured a new policy with a more competitive broker.

Statefarm should value long-time customers with discounts, but if you purchase an insurance policy from them you should be aware that won't be the case. My agent assured me that this insulting rate increase isn't related to the Desjardins takeover but I'm not convinced, and believe that under Desjardins' ownership you should find a different insurance provider.
