Terrible service

1 out of 5 stars

1. I was in an accident. Car slid into my lane on icy roads. AMA did nothing to hold the other party accountable and increased my rates by almost double as it was not my first claim.

2. My daughter's car was hit while parked. AMA still cannot determine fault of the accident. I have had to pay $500 deductible out of my pocket while they determine that a parked car is not at fault for an accident. I'm still waiting.

3. They increased my daughter's premium by 2 - did not send the information to the correct address which she has proof that they have (see #2 - that claim was made at the new address). AMA was behind in their renewals so they took the doubled payment at the end of December for November and then another double payment in the first week of January for December. That's 4x what my daughter was expecting to pay within 7 days. My daughter is on her 8th month of mat leave and not in a financial position to cover these kinds of unforeseen expenses. As a result, AMA is not charging her $40 for insufficient funds and her bank has charged her $50 for insufficient funds.

No one at AMA seems able to do anything. My daughter and I will both be leaving AMA and hope to save others from the frustration by warning you about the inept business practices for a service that you are legally obligated to obtain in order to drive your vehicle.

My rating would be no stars, but that is not an option which is the only reason that I have given them a one star rating.

Greedy company

I called to try and cancel my policy today because I found a much cheaper rate elsewhere and they charged me $100. Keep in mind that I only signed up for their policy 2 days ago and technically their coverage wasn't even supposed to start for another 5 days. I basically got charged for cancelling something that didn't exist yet because god forbid a multi million dollar company get $100 less. Thanks for ruining my birthday AMA. definitely won't ever be recommending them to any friends or family.

I have been a client of AMA for almost 5 years and to be honest I dont know why I stayed so long. Ive had one claim that they put me at fault because they were to lazy to contact the at fault drivers insurance company. This put my monthly amount up to $220 for a single driver and one vehicle.(no previous accidents or tickets) I recently decided to change insurance companies and I feel stupid that I didn't sooner. AMA has screwed up multiple times on my billing, on my claim, pretty much everywhere they possibly could. When I went to my new insurer they said I had no accidents on my record. (AMA screwed up again surprise surprise) I went to cancel my insurance through AMA and they wanted to charge me $120 bucks cause I haven't given them enough of my money! Im glad I switched because now I pay $80 a month for the same coverage!!! (Switched to RBC Insurance and the associate was very knowledgeable and helpful!)

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

My husband bought his first vehicle and when trying to get insurance, ended up signing a policy with AMA. The premium was outrageous but we weren't in a position to change providers at that time. We had a monthly payment system set up, but honestly did miss a couple payments. We're were always at the branch later that day or the next day with cash in hand to pay.
The policy was up for renewal and we knew they probably were worried about us so we went into the branch to resign and offered to pre-pay there months, as a sign of good faith. They told us it wasn't a problem and not to worry, and that the policy had been auto-renewed at the same price and terms.

About a month later we were pulled over (burnt out brake light) and provided our insurance pink card, registration and license and the officer went to verify it all. He came back 10 minutes later informing us our pink card was invalid and the policy had been cancelled. We had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Husband called AMA Goodman's and was informed that on the 1st premium payment due date, AMA had tried to deduct the entirely annual premium, which obviously had bounced. They had then cancelled the policy as a result and had mailed a notice to us yesterday (obviously hasn't arrived yet).

As a result, we were running without insurance and were handed a $5k fine. The officer was sympathetic and while he was supposed to have vehicle towed to impound lot (at our expense) and held until set could provide proof of insurance, he let us call a tow truck and tow it home (3 blocks).
We reinsured with a different company through a broker that evening and won't ever go near AMA again.

Never pay out of pocket

My daughter borrowed my vehicle and backed into another vehicle, it was a minor accident. After all the paperwork was completed I paid $1400.00 out of pocket to guarantee my insurance would be "claim free" as directed by AMA. I have recently moved to British Columbia and required a claims history letter to qualify for a discount. I received m requested letter via e-mail, Much to my surprise, I have a $144 claim against my account due to a rental car which was required by the victim. I was never presented with a chance to pay the rental bill, and many opportunities were presented to AMA to notify me regarding this claim, as I had vehicle insurance as well as being an AMA Premier member. No notification.....nothing!!!! I called AMA and offered to pay the $144 and requested a new letter with no claims associated, they said that it has been too long as date of loss was 22/11/2011. I feel like a complete idiot for paying the $1400.00 as ICBC told me $144 claim is the same as a $144,000,000 claim. So I lose 4 years safe driving discount at 5% per year! Never, ever, again!

Money from previous accounts?

by Frustrated Customer on Sep 5, 2013
1 out of 5 stars

I had auto insurance with ama. They tried to take the premium from my account. Unfortunalty I was short on the amount they needed and so the amount bounced. My fault entirely. Rather than contact me, they automatically tried to take the money from two previous accounts that they had on record, for me. Of course I had no money in either and so had three lots of bank charges. I was so mad. I cancelled my car insurance and membership, but left my house insurance, because it is more difficult to change.
.......continued in house insurance review.
