Not worth money any longer

by Holly on Feb 25, 2022
1.5 out of 5 stars

After reading other comments, the company sure has changed a lot since I had a membership. Signed up again after 2 years. Definitely less service for more money. Miscommunication from two different agents of what could be done. AMA did the same tow as requested today 2.5 years ago, they towed the same vehicle twice with no problems, however today they won't give the same service, even though the kms are way less (only 10km) and it wasn't being towed to a garage for repairs but a house to be repaired. The membership I was sold this month, I was told it was the wrong membership for what I need - even though it is the same membership I had two years ago. I feel to get what I need, I would have to lie to get the service required. People should not have to give full details...

Ripe you off

One of the worst insurer I ever had!!! I hit a moose in northern Ontario and AMA does nothing to help me... He never covers the tow truck... And a motel... Noting... I had to pay 3780$ to towed my van in the next decent city... Plus 250$ of motel... In the end, I deal by my self for a renting car at one hour drive from my place... Took more than a week to mandate an appraisal to evaluate the vehicle... But don't worry AMA will ripe you off every month!

Don't deal with AMA. They are extremely overpriced. I was quoted $250 a month for insurance for my car so 3 grand a year... for a car worth only $5500. I managed to get it down to $190 but that was with a $1000 deductible and took basically everything off my insurance except comprehensive and collision. Went to TD insurance and got insurance for $133 a month with $250 deductible, totally covered and accident forgiveness.

Please take my warning and do not deal with them. Their customer service is horrible. I paid my January's insurance (as my new one with cheaper insurance starts feb 1) and they want to charge me another $104 for I don't even know what to be honest and I don't know why it can't come out of my deposit I paid when I started with them. I spent 15 minutes trying to get the lady to explain it so I can understand and she basically told me "well it makes sense to us" after I said this makes zero sense to me. I still don't understand why I'm getting charged this but it's easier to just pay it then keep fighting it.

Seriously though do not deal with AMA. I am now with TD and they're a lot cheaper.... 120$ a month cheaper.

Terrible claims experience

by Ksider on Jun 29, 2017

I've been with AMA for 3 years and have never had a claim. My new car 7000 km on it caught fire outside my house it's on camera and I've provided fire investigators and AMA with photos.
Ama authorized a rental because I've got full coverage including loss of use well two days after authorizing it the claims officer decided that I'm not intitiled to a rental because fires don't happen everyday so to her it's suspicious ( foul play was ruled out by the fire dept when they reviewed camera and reviewed car ) I argued and was told by her supervisor if I can afford a new car I can afford my own rental.
Now they are supposed to be doing an investigation and the cars been sitting outside my house burnt for three days, I'm not an investigator but wouldn't a scene be contaminated after that period of time ?
My biggest thing is from the moment I called ama they made me feel like I did something wrong, they took away the rental that I've been paying for years for just in case and told me to pay for my own I even had the insurance manager go to claims saying I'm covered and they still said I'm not getting one until they do their investigation. All I can say is I feel horrible for recommending AMA to friends and family and if you are thinking about ama please don't do it they are a huge corporation who does what they want policy doesn't matter signed documents are ignored ama was fantastic until I actually needed them.
Thank you

Terrible service

1. I was in an accident. Car slid into my lane on icy roads. AMA did nothing to hold the other party accountable and increased my rates by almost double as it was not my first claim.

2. My daughter's car was hit while parked. AMA still cannot determine fault of the accident. I have had to pay $500 deductible out of my pocket while they determine that a parked car is not at fault for an accident. I'm still waiting.

3. They increased my daughter's premium by 2 - did not send the information to the correct address which she has proof that they have (see #2 - that claim was made at the new address). AMA was behind in their renewals so they took the doubled payment at the end of December for November and then another double payment in the first week of January for December. That's 4x what my daughter was expecting to pay within 7 days. My daughter is on her 8th month of mat leave and not in a financial position to cover these kinds of unforeseen expenses. As a result, AMA is not charging her $40 for insufficient funds and her bank has charged her $50 for insufficient funds.

No one at AMA seems able to do anything. My daughter and I will both be leaving AMA and hope to save others from the frustration by warning you about the inept business practices for a service that you are legally obligated to obtain in order to drive your vehicle.

My rating would be no stars, but that is not an option which is the only reason that I have given them a one star rating.

Greedy company

I called to try and cancel my policy today because I found a much cheaper rate elsewhere and they charged me $100. Keep in mind that I only signed up for their policy 2 days ago and technically their coverage wasn't even supposed to start for another 5 days. I basically got charged for cancelling something that didn't exist yet because god forbid a multi million dollar company get $100 less. Thanks for ruining my birthday AMA. definitely won't ever be recommending them to any friends or family.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Negative Claim Experience

My car was a write-off following a collision. They continued to charge me my monthly insurance rate long after my car was taken away. This was because, according to them, I failed to call their insurance department following my call to their claims department after the collision occurred. They informed me there is no intracommunication within the company amongst the departments, so the duty fell to me to make sure my insurance was cancelled. However, at no point was it expressed to me that a second call had to be made. I do not recognize this as common knowledge, considering the multiple people I have spoken to who have also made collision claims and who have never come across this issue of having to call multiple departments (and then being penalized for not doing so).

I had never been involved in a collision before and had never made a claim. I called the claims department, informed them of what had happened, and did not receive any instructions or advice on how to proceed. At that moment, I felt safe and secure with the idea that my insurer was taking care of the resulting mess. If I am paying $200+ a month, then I would expect to feel secure following an accident, trusting my insurance company to take care of those items which fall within their realm. Obviously, my trust was misplaced.

They refused to reimburse me for the monies that had been removed from my account and proceeded to charge a cancellation fee for "cancelling" my insurance coverage. The overall experience made me feel like a walking dollar sign as opposed to a person. If you are looking for a false sense of security, then AMA is the place to go. However, if you are ever in need of making a claim, you can be assured that they will make no effort in absorbing the shock of the process.

To be fair, my prior experiences with AMA in dealing with their sale representatives were generally positive. That being said, people are usually all smiles when they're attempting to get one's business. Keeping it, on the other hand, is a huge AMA failure.

tl;dr AMA is useless if you're making a claim, and -- really -- the whole point of an insurer is to be useful when you have to make a claim.

AMA insurance is poop

Only at AMA will you be able to find an insurance company who can take an accident that was deemed 100% the other person's fault (by the police and by them at first) and make you pay 50% of the damages. Terrible experience with insurance claim, super slow process and very little explanation. Not impressed. Never going to return to them.

Scam artists

My husband bought his first vehicle and when trying to get insurance, ended up signing a policy with AMA. The premium was outrageous but we weren't in a position to change providers at that time. We had a monthly payment system set up, but honestly did miss a couple payments. We're were always at the branch later that day or the next day with cash in hand to pay.
The policy was up for renewal and we knew they probably were worried about us so we went into the branch to resign and offered to pre-pay there months, as a sign of good faith. They told us it wasn't a problem and not to worry, and that the policy had been auto-renewed at the same price and terms.

About a month later we were pulled over (burnt out brake light) and provided our insurance pink card, registration and license and the officer went to verify it all. He came back 10 minutes later informing us our pink card was invalid and the policy had been cancelled. We had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. Husband called AMA Goodman's and was informed that on the 1st premium payment due date, AMA had tried to deduct the entirely annual premium, which obviously had bounced. They had then cancelled the policy as a result and had mailed a notice to us yesterday (obviously hasn't arrived yet).

As a result, we were running without insurance and were handed a $5k fine. The officer was sympathetic and while he was supposed to have vehicle towed to impound lot (at our expense) and held until set could provide proof of insurance, he let us call a tow truck and tow it home (3 blocks).
We reinsured with a different company through a broker that evening and won't ever go near AMA again.

Never pay out of pocket

by AMA Not on Apr 7, 2015
1.5 out of 5 stars

My daughter borrowed my vehicle and backed into another vehicle, it was a minor accident. After all the paperwork was completed I paid $1400.00 out of pocket to guarantee my insurance would be "claim free" as directed by AMA. I have recently moved to British Columbia and required a claims history letter to qualify for a discount. I received m requested letter via e-mail, Much to my surprise, I have a $144 claim against my account due to a rental car which was required by the victim. I was never presented with a chance to pay the rental bill, and many opportunities were presented to AMA to notify me regarding this claim, as I had vehicle insurance as well as being an AMA Premier member. No notification.....nothing!!!! I called AMA and offered to pay the $144 and requested a new letter with no claims associated, they said that it has been too long as date of loss was 22/11/2011. I feel like a complete idiot for paying the $1400.00 as ICBC told me $144 claim is the same as a $144,000,000 claim. So I lose 4 years safe driving discount at 5% per year! Never, ever, again!
