AMA Charging premium

by Not Happy Customer on Feb 26, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

My vehicle insurance was with AMA for the past 20 years. I’ve never had a claim, no accidents, no traffic tickets. For 20 years I’ve been paying them for insurance and now last night at work someone hit my vehicle and never left a note “Hit and run”. My vehicle was legally parked in a crescent. This is out of my control as anyone would know who has been in this situation. I’ve filed a hit and run with the police and went to AMA to get it fixed. When I got to AMA, I was expecting to pay my 500$ deductible and they would take care of the rest. I was very wrong, paying them for 20 years of insurance with no claims, they tell me my premium will probably go up since it’s a brand new vehicle. How can my premium go up for a parked vehicle that I’m “Not at Fault” for? It’s a hit and run and can happen anytime, anywhere to anyone, unfortunately. I told the agent I do not want my insurance to go up over this. I’m shocked, the agent has the nerves to tell me to just paint over it and it should be fine. Excuse me? This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s a brand new Acura, I’ve been paying for 20 years of insurance and they tell me to just paint it myself? Also, the agent said it’s AMA policy to raise premium over things like these and they can’t do anything. Real nice, from an insurance company that is this cheap and all about taking your hard-earned money and when something like this happens, oh, your premium is going up. I’m done with AMA and I’m moving my house insurance, all vehicles and life insurance elsewhere. I will pay out of my own pocket to fix my vehicle but I will leave you a bad review over this. Beware, everyone, this can happen to you as well.

not impressed

Luckily we just had a vehicle breakdown outside our house. But we have been on hold with AMA for 3 hours now. In Alberta, in the winter we are lucky that we weren't on a highway when the car shut down. Why are we paying for a membership when it would be much faster for us to call a competitive towing company to tow us? I will not be renewing my membership. It would be much cheaper for us to use a tow company when needed rather than the services AMA provides. If they provided what they say they provide, I would have no problem using them, however, the long wait times and poor customer service makes it hard to justify. I will be saving my money and using a more reliable service from now on.

Asked for claim form 4 times

Couldn't get in touch with our Agent ever. Asked 4 times for claim forms that were always in the mail. I ended up with a concussion and months of therapy. Didn't realize what was happening to me. I needed care as concussions do not show up right away as I have learned. Had to get a 4 legged cane, sunglasses and double vision before I could get therapy for it. I am so mad at them. My insurance company was not there for me. I should've sued my husband that was driving I might have gotten something. Thankfully my doctor arranged free therapy treatments but I could've used double the amount I got. 3 months 'till I felt that I could continue therapy at home by myself. I hate AMA. The chances of getting another concussion have increased.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Avoid AMA auto insurance

If I could give a lower rating, I would. They have been the worst to deal with in my recent whiplash accident. They don't care at all, except for their money. They will do anything, including mock you and your injuries. It is not about pain and suffering, it is a huge game to them.

44 yr member, 2 claims, 9 and 10 yrs ago, or so. Charging me $1,100 and change for $1M PLPD. Totally out of line with the market. My bad. How many years of the 44 have I been overcharged? Hate to think about it.

Stay away!!!

Why was I cancelled for non-payment when I don't owe AMA anything? I cancelled my insurance because I sold the car. When AMA tried to force me to pay an extra month, I refused, so AMA put on me a cancellation for non-payment. Do you know that I can't get insurance anywhere without paying for the full year? Isn't it against the law to have insurance on a car when you don't own it?!!!

I notified AMA insurance that our house had sold on July 25th. When I was asked for our new address, I let them know that we are living in a fifth wheel until we figure out where we are going. I let them know we are going to spend a couple of months on Vancouver Island in the winter, and that we planned to go across Canada in the summer. I did not give time frames, nor did I say we would be leaving Alberta permanently. On Thursday, August 16th my husband and I both received e-mails and phone messages telling us to contact AMA immediately. The phone message said that because I had not sent in my confirmation of the primary driver, my auto insurance would be cancelled. I called them and asked what they meant. I've had the car since November 2014 and have never had to submit such a thing. I was told that a registered letter had been sent to my last known address on July 30th. I, of course, had not received that letter since we had sold that house. When I pointed that out, she then proceeded to tell me that I was moving to BC and would be travelling around Canada and the US, so, therefore, they could no longer insure me. WHAT? I told her we were NOT moving to BC and that we were not travelling to the US in our fifth wheel. I also told her our home base will be Alberta. She did not take my new address. I have several questions about this. 1. since when does an insurance company get to dictate where I travel? 2. Why would anyone send a registered letter to somewhere the person no longer lives? It took two weeks to contact us by e-mail and phone. Would that not have been the way to connect in the first place? 3. I was told that AMA is only licenced in Alberta so they could not provide us service in other provinces. My insurance policy went to the end of November. As of this date, I have been in Alberta for all but two weeks of the year. Does that mean we would not have been covered in the other province we visited? I am thankful that I have never had a claim. I suspect it would have been a gong show with how AMA has handled this situation. Total crap service! When I complained about this formally, I was connected with someone who was "reviewing" our situation. I was told our insurance would be reinstated. They acknowledged that they should have found another way to contact us for the information they required. So, the "reinstatement" is: a reduced liability coverage and no collision or comprehensive. Complete garbage. We are looking for alternatives since their reinstatement as it stands is not acceptable.

Never use AMA

I have been with AMA for 4 years. Every time I've gone in they've needed to, basically, re-enter my information with current mailed documents, showing where I live and who I am... even though I have provided them with this information numerous times. I was also told by a staff member that there are cheaper places to get insured and that I should, as I came in with 3 kids I work with, so it was assumed I could not afford their insurance as a 'single mother'. I wanted the CAA coverage and told her no, I was getting insured there. It took over 3 hours for them to finally figure it out and do it. A year in, I had a near accident, to which I was told by police, I was not at fault. The man had my information and went through AMA. I had a review and then there was no follow up. My insurance was raised from $80/m to $135, when I inquired if it had to do with that incident, I was told no, it was because of the forest fire in Fort Mac. I found out through a different insurance agency (I wanted to switch due to terrible service, bad attitudes, and negligence on their part) that they had, in fact, blamed me for the accident. I was not informed of this and was lied to my face about this fact!! Now I'm trying to cancel with them, I mentioned this upon renewal that I am moving provinces, so a full year was not required to insure me. Now they want to penalize me again for their error. I have 2 other friends who have had the exact same issues (AMA losing people's paperwork and lack of follow up) and have thus cancelled their policies. I wish I had done research before ever using this company and I hope to help whoever reads this, so they don't end up getting completely screwed over by this company over and over again.

Harassment

by Mj on Jul 9, 2018
1.5 out of 5 stars

Was t-boned, other driver took 100% fault. Originally the claim was going well until we rejected the low-ball offer for my written-off vehicle. My vehicle was in perfect condition except for the cracked windshield as per the adjuster. We told him we’d have to think about it as it seemed horribly low. He then proceeded to call me 6 times, text me, and email twice, all within two hours!! My husband then emailed him stating how unprofessional he was conducting himself and that we would be consulting with a lawyer. Upon doing that, we were advised to only communicate through email and take as long as we need. Months even. Almost 2 months later and lots of comparison vehicle we had to search online we got 50% more than the original offer. AMA is not here to help you or look out for you. They were awful. An accident that was NOT my fault and I was made to feel like I was being attacked by the insurance company who’s supposed to be on my side.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Don’t use them

Underwriters were nice but salesmen usually aren't. When it came time for my claim, they told me what I thought should happen but the adjuster and appraisal changes their numbers 3-4 times to get out of a payout
