Changed porting options due to interest rates

by Dani on Jul 12, 2022
1 out of 5 stars

Without any notification, they have decided to no longer allow porting of your mortgage. Pure FRAUD. My current rate is 1.59% no doubt they want me to break it and prequalify for a 5% mortgage. CRIMINALS!

Bad service all around

by Sheldon on Apr 1, 2022

Tried to renew my mortgage should have been straightforward no problem. Phone calls to and from the Calgary branch Downtown were very unprofessional and rude. They do not follow up with their clients and just leave you hanging a total waist of banking.

They will take all your money...

by Rana on Jan 6, 2022
1.5 out of 5 stars

I used National Bank as my mortgage provider and regret this very much. I had multiple issues with my contract throughout my time with them. This includes issues with tax payments (they collected way more than they needed to), issues with communication (so difficult to find answers), initial signing (the broker I dealt with did not give me nearly enough info and this cost me about $9k in fees later).
I signed for a 5-year mortgage with a co-signer in place. Two years in, I reached out to a new broker and she helped me do something called an "Add Remove" (if it wasn't for her this rating would be 1 star). She helped me change my co-signer to my mother and things were finally starting to go smoothly.
During this pandemic, we decided to downsize, sell our home in Gatineau and get a small Condo in Ottawa. When speaking to my new broker, she explained to me that in order to be approved for this mortgage, we need to sell the home and decrease our liability. We were able to get conditional approval based on the sale of our current home. We did this and started our new mortgage (which was lower since we were downsizing).
Here is where things get bad... Once we completed the papers for the sale and met with the lawyer, I was informed that National bank was charging me $9,000 CAD for breaking my mortgage contract. How is this possible when I refinanced my mortgage with them?? Well... when I asked them this question, their initial response was that our refinancing was at a lower cost than our initial mortgage. You would think they would make an exception for something like this seeing as we are continued customers...
I reached out to several managers about this issue in hopes of even just reducing the costs. All of them gave me false promises of looking into things for me and then ghosting me. Yes, no call, no follow-up.. nothing.
Here is the worst thing that happened in the end... Not only did I not get any response from managers about my issue, but one of the reps that had contacted me to pick up a cheque (money they owed me for tax calculations they messed up). This guy has the audacity to text me and ask me on a date.. I was extremely offended and so was my boyfriend. I expected more from their company in every way and am still waiting for someone to reach out to me.

Doesn't care about clients

I had asked for a mortgage deferral of two months during COVID-19. Something they advertised and it was really easy to do. My mortgage payments had always been automatic and I am the last person to not pay her bills. Two weeks after I applied for the deferral I noticed that the payments had stopped and I thought, that worked great. Oh well, still in the middle of COVID-19, a few weeks later, I receive a call from their collection department asking me why I stopped making payments. Needless to say, I was shocked and not pleased and asked her to look into it. There was no apology at all, just, oh well, we haven't processed the deferral yet!!! So why did they stop my payments? I was livid that I was receiving the call after the banks were all advertising how much they care about their customers. The only excuse she told me, is that she doesn't have access to other account information as if that's my fault. Sorry, but I can only give National Bank the worst rating for Customer Service after this experience.

National Bank is a SCAM

by fran961 on Apr 29, 2019

I have my fixed mortgage and line of credit mortgage at National Bank. I have experienced SO many problems with payments to this account, their accounting system, their branch personnel. My mortgage accounts have been overcharged interest of thousands of dollars due to their inability to follow instructions or give appropriate online services. I just called them for about the 10th time this year and the first service rep transferred me to someone who could not listen to my problem. I asked for a manager so she transferred me to a service that gave me a message that said we are not available and hung up. This is typical. Going into the branch is just as frustrating. DO NOT BANK THERE.

Terrible customer service

by YR on Mar 16, 2019
2 out of 5 stars

We've had a mortgage with them for five years, and they never, ever send us our annual mortgage statement (which I believe they are legally required to do). So every year I have to phone them, sit on hold forever, answer many questions, listen to their lies that they already mailed it and their promises it will be mailed next year. They say we must have moved house and not updated our address (we haven't moved), then say it was sent to the other name on the mortgage (my husband who, unsurprisingly, did not get it either). It never changes. I should have paid a little more so I don't have to go through this every year. If you live in Western Canada, be aware that they are open Ontario/Quebec business hours on Mon-Fri only. So you either have to wake up early to call (and sit on hold) or take a chunk of time out of your workday.

These guys are awful, branch employees and directors are clueless and never return your calls. I have to renew my mortgage and can't get a hold of anyone. Call the head office and they can't help after waiting on hold for 37 minutes. I would rather pay a little more for my next mortgage than deal with them.

Very useful and prompt responses. As first time buyers they helped us out a lot. We were lucky to get a mortagage with low income. We are happy.

out of 3 Canadian banks (royal bank Bank of Montreal National Bank) the National was the most welcoming the other two after a lengthy process didn't accept my mortgage request where as my experience with the National was very pleasant and easy to process.
