Customer Appreciation

by Christina on Sep 14, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

After years of loyalty with no accidents. I wanted to add my son as an occasional driver to my policy. They wanted to raise my premium to $900 a month more. Of course I cannot afford that. How disgusting to treat a customer this way. I will be changing providers ASAP! Also they still have no accident forginess really? Who does that anymore. No need to stay a moment longer with this horrible company

Disgusted after 30+ years

by churchill59 on Aug 19, 2015
2.5 out of 5 stars

After 30+ years of paying out over $30,000, and no accidents, until my spouse had an accident this year. Due the fact that she was on my policy for just 3 years, there was no accident forgiveness for her. Then I got a letter from Unifund Johnson saying that they would no longer be able to renew my policy, due to this accident. I then called my local agent and she then told me that I could renew it, but it would cost me an extra $3000 per year. I switched insurance companies and am now paying $3400 per year instead of the $5500 that Unifund Johnson was going to charge me. Totally no respect for the many years of paying into their insurance plan. I will be telling my story to everyone I know and will be discouraging them from ever contacting Unifund Johnson Insurance.

Dishonest Overpriced Company

by mallard462 on Aug 13, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

I was a customer with this company for 13 years, and recently I had the last of a string of very shady experiences with them.
I saved $500 a year just by switching insurance companies to another one today and I am getting even better coverage with my new company.

As far as their dishonest and shady dealings:

Most recently I received a speeding ticket for doing 76kmph in an 80. Apparently the section I was in was a 50, however the sign was removed for construction over a month and never replaced. I was not from this area so I was unfamiliar with the speed limit sign. Under the highway traffic act the zone is an 80, however the police officer still charged me, knowing they were in the wrong and the whole incident was documented on dash cam with GPS data. I also went to the police station and the captain admitted to me that they were in the wrong but could not reverse the ticket. I ended up having to pay since the amount of money to fight the ticket was not worth it. They lawyer would of been $400, and I would have had to attend court in the town where I got the ticket, which would of costs me $300 in gas and about $400 in lost wages. So instead of $1,100 out of my pocket I paid the fine, since the officer who knew she was in the wrong bumped it down to the minimum fine. So I had no demerit points and it should have been forgotten there. Now with any normal insurance company a no point ticket does not effect you, but not these scammers. Three weeks later I got a letter in the mail informing me my insurance would be increased $250 additional dollars per year, even though I did nothing wrong. The insurance company did not give a crap about my word and they did not care about my evidence. It took me three days to get in contact with anyone to even explain my situation, since they laid off everyone and shut down the offices here and moved it all to a mega-call centre in Toronto. So I did finally get in contact with someone who was unsympathetic and did not care. So after 13 years they could not be bothered to give me the benefit of the doubt. The company I am now switching too is only two thirds the price. I am accident and claim free, and have no demerit points, but Johnson treats me like garbage.

I also had an other incident a couple years ago where someone did a hit and run on my car. Johnson were unsympathetic and treated me like I was a criminal. They would not pay out even a third of what it was worth. The car basically suffered from nothing but a dented quarter panel which could of been fixed for under $2000. So after 10 years of full coverage They tried to write off my car. When that happened I just dropped to basic coverage and fixed it myself. I then drove it for another year and a half before I sold it.

All the good reviews on this site about Johnson from three or four years ago, however they have changed a lot. What a damn joke Johnson has become. I felt that their company was the bane of my existence, so today I stood up and finally switched companies.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Rude Customer Service

by Upset Customer on May 14, 2015

I've been with Johnson for over 6 years. And got to say had fairly decent experience other than random increase in rates with change of trend after I cancelled one of my car insurance to RBC. RBC cut the premium by over 30%, shocked yes, as I was expecting discounts for being loyal with 3 cars insured with them for over 6 years. What pissed me off is today's conversation with an absolutely ab-noxious representative (surprisingly female) who troubled me for over 10 minutes to do an insurance change where by I had managed to do this with my previous contact with no issues via minimal communication. I will be switching within weeks as I've already got much lower rates. Nobody should be dealing with such rude behaviors especially when you have no claim, no tickets with clean records for over 20 years. Warning to people who are looking to contact Johnson be prepared for a great customer rep for first conversation. Once you get the insurance you are toast. Just want to share my experience, and have managed to convince 5 families whom I have recommended to Johnson to get off. And hope Johnson Insurance get their act straight especially when hiring rude customer reps. Bring the old reps back they were good.

Terrible Customer Service

by j7tran on Mar 31, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

Was insured with them for about 2 years, terrible terrible service. Called in for a quote one day, had to speak to our local account representative, or account supervisor is what they call them. The guy was completely rude, no manners at all, asked if I could get a quote on a secondary vehicle I was looking to purchase. Advised if I did buy that vehicle I would not be taking transit anymore and the mileage to reflect that. Got back with a an insanely high quote so I decided not to purchase the vehicle. A week later I get a bill for over $700 on my insurance plan because of a change in mileage, I called to inquire and he told me I have to report actual km's between home and work, when the quote was for a vehicle I DO NOT OWN and did not purchase, and the mileage was based on whether I purchased that car. Ended up having to go through a ton of paperwork to revert it all back. Waste of time, Second incident, called Johnson Insurance directly so I could avoid this rep, they advised that YOU HAVE to go through your local rep, requested for a new REP and they advised it is not possible. What a retarded rule if you ask me. So ended up calling the same rep, asked for a home insurance quote to see if I combine it with car insurance it might drop my rate a bit. Got my quote, got off the phone, 2 weeks later I have the package in the mail with the package already processed. I never even agreed to go with them, unbelievable. Processed without my acknowledgement. Same process all over again, had to fill out forms, fax, waste my time and cancel something I never even signed up for. End of the day, left this horrible insurance company and could never be happier with my current provider. My recommendation, stay away from this company, I have friends and family who also used Johnson and advised of terrible experiences.

OK Service - Runaway Prices

by Runaway on Nov 6, 2014

Auto and Home Insurance keeps going up another 25% increase this year with no claims, tickets, or missed payments. After several years I'm moving on - they are just too expensive with their ever increasing runaway prices.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Stay away from this company

Stay away form this company at all costs. Had been a long time 20 year customer with them. Found a way cheaper rate $1100.00 per year for better coverage, and they charged us $250.00 to cancel our policy. They ripped us off for years with over rates, and then charged us to leave. Will never use them again.

Incompetent, and expensive

by Upset on Aug 22, 2014

This company has been asking ONA ( Ontario Nurses Assoc) members to use them for their insurance , so for the past 24 yrs, we have been with them and the past 2 weeks, I have been treated by their adjustor and claims department like an old rag!!! I had an accident early this month , hit from behind by an old person who was in a rush to get to church. I filed the claim and it took them over a week to call me back, not even asking if I was ok and to top it sll, wrote my car off. I had been paying $2629.00 / yr for a 2002 Acura 4 door Premium for years and the car was in mint condition with only 168,900 km mileage. Guess how much they are giving me for my car??? A lousy 4,800!!!! On top of this, I have been on the phone calling the claims dept, the adjustor because they never answer the call and they do not leave a voice message that they are off for a week and they do not apologize for their incompetence!!! DO NOT BUY INSURANCE from them!! They charge so much more, over $300!!! The phone calls alone to them to get information was enough to raise my blood pressure! If you want Better Sevice and better price, seek somewhere else!

I saved over 5k by switching!

by johnsonisterrible on May 22, 2014

This place is ridiculous. I had one speeding ticket and after being insured by them for 8 years they automatically put me into their high-risk category with a rate increase of over 200%. They quoted me $600 per month for insurance. Are they crazy? Sure... let me just get out my chequebook and pay for that, no big deal.

The customer service is horrendous. If you call and your 'service advisor' is not there, they send you to random people all across Canada who know absolutely nothing about your file and what you are talking about. When we purchased a new car I spent over 2 hours on the phone being transferred around until someone eventually helped me, although not pleasantly.

A lesson to anyone who wants to be insured through these "big guys"... go through a broker. I was able to get my insurance down to $125 a MONTH vs. the $600 per month they quoted me. As soon as you have an accident/ticket, they take that opportunity to screw you. I will be letting everyone know of this terrible experience.
