First and only claim in 20yrs

by KJ on Apr 18, 2019

It's been two months and counting and I haven't been issued my payment. Even after the claim was excepted and signed. I will be cancelling my insurance once I, finally, receive payment. Stay away from this company. The reviews are correct! This company is a scam! They will postpone your claim, so you get a bottom dollar for your vehicle.

Rip. Off.

I received a call feedback email. Is this a joke? I didn't contact Johnson. They contacted me. And, they contacted me to tell me how their system made an error and then proceeded to tell me false information, and then told me I was going to have to pay more than double the additional amount quoted back in August because of some mysterious "error" in the system. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the agent told me I could, but that they were not going to tell me anything different. A supervisor was not available, so now I'm supposedly waiting between 24-48 hours for a callback. The survey sent to me doesn't contain an option for "Johnson called me to tell me how they screwed up and are now going to charge me more than I was quoted".

Worst + most horrible service

They are so hard to reach and can we say they have a service for French clients? It's almost a joke. 8 days trying to reach someone and get proper info in the other official language. I made a complaint to an upper level, most inefficient answers by that supervisor, same formatted responses that I heard 3 years ago and NO improvement as they don't care about us BUT they want our money, this is for sure! So Why support them?! Think to consider too other real CDN Ins. companies that really care!!

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Terrible claim service

I have been a customer paying premiums for 30 years without a claim. I had a hail claim and the whole experience has been a nightmare. I went through two claims adjusters off and on then got a supervisor, from whom I maybe get a response once a month no matter if I call or email. They sent me to a shop that did a terrible job and only half the car got painted. Refused to accept my vehicle as fixed. I just want my vehicle fixed. It is now November and my claim was in June. The worst claim service in the industry... I have been in insurance for years. This is unacceptable, so buyer beware they will take your money but if you need coverage, they just ignore you and hope you will go away. I definitely would warn anyone not to use this company.

Not a smooth experience

Almost 2 months ago I was rear ended, and that is when my nightmare began. The accident happened at 8:00 MST, and after numerous attempts, I was finally able to get ahold of Johnson Insurance at 10:00 MST. After speaking with one of Johnson's call center employees and providing her with my statement, I was advised to take the car a half hour away to one of their guaranteed auto body shops to get the damages appraised. The autobody shop deemed my car unsafe/ undrivable and kept my car saying that they would let me know when Johnson Insurance gave them the go ahead to start repairs . A few days later I received an e-mail from an adjuster stating that if I had not heard from her by the time I received this letter to please contact her, the letter did not provide any sort of contact information so I just replied to the email providing all my info. 2 days later at 20:00 MST I get a phone call from this adjuster, stating that she was not aware of being assigned my case file but she would gladly assist me (off to a great start). I provided my statement again to my now assigned adjuster, and was asked to please send a copy of the police report, my written statement, pictures of the accident and any other information I had. I was advised that they would give me a call once they got ahold of Wawanesa (the other drivers Insurance company). A week later I get a call from the autobody shop to advise that the Insurance company approved the $15,000 repair to my car.3 days after that I called the adjuster to get an update, and was advised that they deemed the accident No Fault on my part, but due to Wawanesa not returning their calls I would have to pay the $500 deductible to get my car back and would be reimbursed later...I was also given a choice to put a stop work on my car until Wawanesa responded. Not wanting to be in a rental car any longer, paying glass coverage per day, I agreed to pay the deductible in order to get my vehicle back. 4 weeks after the accident happened my car was finally ready. I paid the $500 deductible, and was able to drive away in my own car. After not hearing from the Insurance adjuster in over 2 weeks I left messages for her to find out what was going on...I did not receive a response back until 2 days ago. At that point I was advised that wawanesa was claiming a no fault accident for their driver who ran into the back of me while I was at a full stop! Johnson Insurance has advised that the accident is now being investigated, even after telling me regardless of the circumstances the person that rear ended you is always at fault. Also to top
It off, my adjuster didnt even review the accident report as she wasnt even aware that the other driver was put down as not wearing a seatbelt at the timr of the accident! Im absolutely furious with Johnson Insurance for the way this has/is being handled! I am now obtaining legal advise regarding the situation, and already looking at alternative Insurance companies for my house and vehicle.

Johnson ins not trustworthy

I have been insured with Johnson insurance for well over 10 years now and have never had an issue until I actually needed their help.

Instance 1. My car was hit in a parking lot. I was not present, but the person left a phone # which I called for the info etc. Provide this to my adjuster who then tells me he can't get in touch with the insurance company. After him being unable to get me any info and being in a rental for weeks, I Email my adjuster asking what is going on and whether or not I should be thinking about getting the police involved. I receive no reply for months. Not to mention I was charged 1200$ for the rental even though I have loss of use up to 3000$ and have for 14 years

Instance 2. The same car was stolen from in front of the house. The police were in a car chase with the suspect which resulted in damage to my vehicle. The adjuster tried to send me to a shop at the other end of the city when he already knows it is undrivable. Similar to my last adjuster, i asked him to send someone to appraise the vehicle at my home and have not received a reply in a week.

The sales department and customer service are all very nice and polite but that is just to sell you a policy. When it comes time for them to provide you service for the money you've been paying them it is a different company.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Shady and terrible company

Being a student that recently graduated from College, these guys like to send out their flyers and brochures tell you what great services they have for students/alumni. Not only did they overcharge me, when I moved into another province they made it as difficult as possible to cancel. They were extremely difficult to get a hold of, then they charged me an additional month after I cancelled with them and then another $10 the month after. Fee's out the ass with these guys. They're happy to answer the phone when you want to sign up and give them your money, but whenever you have a question or need to contact them they never return calls, voice mails or emails. I've now been waiting for a letter of experience from them (for a completely clean history with them) for over a month. I absolutely discourage anyone from going anywhere near these crooks. Thanks for helping out the students guys! Because we're the ones with all the money, right?!

screwed up car insurance

by Lunare on Aug 18, 2015

Bought insurance for new car end of June 2015, despite several requests have not received a hard copy of the insurance form. In addition, Johnson's keeps confusing the expiration dates for a car I sold and our 2nd car. The latter insurance expires next year, but they have now decided it expires when my sold car's insurance expires shortly, and want payment now. Phoning them is useless as waits are endless, plus they aren't answering email. They also owe me a refund on the insurance for the car I sold, but sent me a 'credit' instead.

Dishonest Overpriced Company

by mallard462 on Aug 13, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

I was a customer with this company for 13 years, and recently I had the last of a string of very shady experiences with them.
I saved $500 a year just by switching insurance companies to another one today and I am getting even better coverage with my new company.

As far as their dishonest and shady dealings:

Most recently I received a speeding ticket for doing 76kmph in an 80. Apparently the section I was in was a 50, however the sign was removed for construction over a month and never replaced. I was not from this area so I was unfamiliar with the speed limit sign. Under the highway traffic act the zone is an 80, however the police officer still charged me, knowing they were in the wrong and the whole incident was documented on dash cam with GPS data. I also went to the police station and the captain admitted to me that they were in the wrong but could not reverse the ticket. I ended up having to pay since the amount of money to fight the ticket was not worth it. They lawyer would of been $400, and I would have had to attend court in the town where I got the ticket, which would of costs me $300 in gas and about $400 in lost wages. So instead of $1,100 out of my pocket I paid the fine, since the officer who knew she was in the wrong bumped it down to the minimum fine. So I had no demerit points and it should have been forgotten there. Now with any normal insurance company a no point ticket does not effect you, but not these scammers. Three weeks later I got a letter in the mail informing me my insurance would be increased $250 additional dollars per year, even though I did nothing wrong. The insurance company did not give a crap about my word and they did not care about my evidence. It took me three days to get in contact with anyone to even explain my situation, since they laid off everyone and shut down the offices here and moved it all to a mega-call centre in Toronto. So I did finally get in contact with someone who was unsympathetic and did not care. So after 13 years they could not be bothered to give me the benefit of the doubt. The company I am now switching too is only two thirds the price. I am accident and claim free, and have no demerit points, but Johnson treats me like garbage.

I also had an other incident a couple years ago where someone did a hit and run on my car. Johnson were unsympathetic and treated me like I was a criminal. They would not pay out even a third of what it was worth. The car basically suffered from nothing but a dented quarter panel which could of been fixed for under $2000. So after 10 years of full coverage They tried to write off my car. When that happened I just dropped to basic coverage and fixed it myself. I then drove it for another year and a half before I sold it.

All the good reviews on this site about Johnson from three or four years ago, however they have changed a lot. What a damn joke Johnson has become. I felt that their company was the bane of my existence, so today I stood up and finally switched companies.

Happily Left after 10+years!

by Brooke on Aug 11, 2015

Why is it that on August 11, 2015, I am only NOW getting any money for the chiropractic and massage needed as a result of a NO-FAULT accident in February 2014? Oh, and I had a lawyer!

For over a decade I had both my home and auto insurance with UNIFUND. Throughout that time, I found it impossible to get anyone in Richmond Hill's office to respond to my calls or emails (from the advisors on my insurance documents like Joann L. to the person in charge of complaints - Patricia S.) without having to call head office in Newfoundland to complain. Such a hassle! Get it together!!

Although their prices are good, don't let a good deal blindside you.

In 2014 I had my first NO-FAULT accident and this experience was what caused me to leave Johnsons/Unifund for another company. Here are some of the problems I had, as a result of having UNIFUND insurance, with my small NO-FAULT accident:
-adjustor Larry S. incompetence
-adjustor pressured me to visit only UNIFUND approved treatment clinics when I had one already that I trust and visit
-received mail addressed to me with my name and info but about another client's claim, lawyer, and treatments (and I assume they got my info) such a lack of privacy!
-constantly lost faxed documents I or my health clinic sent to them
-would NOT allow documents to be personally delivered since I live in the same town - suspicious
-recorded me down as the driver AT-FAULT, so when I went to shop around for a new insurance company I had to get this cleared up!
-Took 1 year and 6 months to receive money for the Medical and Rehabilitation services that were supposed to be covered by the assigned policy limit of $3500.00 given to me for my accident

So, if you are fine with having to escalate most matters in order to get things resolved (this is costly, stressful and time sucking) and having to spend countless amounts of your OWN money for treatments covered by your policy, then Johnsons/Unifund is for you! Don't be fooled by their great prices, in the end your sanity and care is much more valuable.
