Their website is slick, easy to buy policies, the fine print is difficult to find. Finally got access to the official Policy document AFTER purchasing coverage online. Had questions because the policy wording contradictory. A representative couldn’t answer my questions on phone and told me she would find answers and email me. Received an email with the policy doc attached (which I already had, that’s why I was calling in the first place!} but no answers or clarification. Phone lines are too busy to talk to someone else. I then called the claims department directly to ask them point-blank if I would be covered if I cancel my trip if a new travel advisory issued by the Government of Canada in future. Was told verbally “yes”, I would be covered, because I purchased the policy in November when a travel advisory was no longer in effect, and also before my travel date in January 2022, and wording in the policy states that this event would be covered if it happened in that order. After Dec 15 a travel advisory was re-issued by govt. Made numerous attempts to contact the travel supplier, finally got through on Dec 24. Cancelled my trip, then submitted 2 claims online with all supporting docs for the cost of non-refundable portion of the trip. Waited 2 months to get a decision, emails and phone calls to them did not get a reply. Claim denied, using a reason that Covid-19 was a well-known event and a travel advisory was in effect since March 2020. This was incorrect. The travel advisory was lifted/removed by the Canadian government in October 2021, after which I booked the trip and bought the policy. Govt then reissued the travel advisory on Dec 15 after I booked the trip and bought the policy. There is very specific wording in the policy of when they will pay claims for this situation, and I met all the stipulations with dates, travel advisories, etc. An identical claim for a family member was also denied for the same reason. I did everything a cautious consumer should do prior to purchasing this policy and making a travel booking, and still, they ignore wording in their policy (contract) and invent reasons why they deny my claim. Their focus is on selling, the workflow on their website is deceptive, giving you the impression you will be covered, even after I read the actual policy and had questions, they could not or would not answer them. They don’t expect consumers to read the policy. They can’t answer questions about the policies they are selling. I have 5 different phone # for ManuLife Travel Insurance. Four different companies involved in this insurance for selling, assistance, claims, etc... Very complicated to get help after policy purchase. I will contact CBC Marketplace or CBC Go Public to see if they are interested in reporting this to Canadians. Seriously considering suing them in Small Claims Court. There probably should be a class action brought against their deceptive practices.
I booked travel interruption insurance with them and booked for March 19-26. Received an email thanking me for the business, but no details. Just two buttons: View Confirmation and View Policy. I believed everything was all set.
Went to print out the details and confirmation on March 18 (the day before the trip) and couldn't get in the "View COnfirmation" with the travel date and phone number. I call and get an agent, and it turns out the system saved my trip for Feb 19-26 (how would I know this if they use start date as criteria to view). She passes me to customer service, that takes 45 minutes. I get a service representative on the line who tells me there's nothing they can do because the trip was in the past, and I should talk to my agent, Michael (there was no Michael. I did it all online). So I end up having to buy another policy but did it through someone else. Manulife essentially stole my money.
I had purchased travel insurance for 1 year so that I could attend medical school in the Caribbean, but I decided to stay in Canada. I called them as soon as I knew which was about 3 weeks after I purchased the insurance and they hung up on me 3 times in total after I waited for 1 hour each time. It’s almost as if they pick up and hang up on purpose to reduce call volumes. When I finally did get to speak with someone I was declined even a partial refund. So they swallowed $985.00 knowing that I don’t need and will not be using the services. I never even travelled. It would be different if I travelled and then tried to get a refund but I didn’t even go anywhere. I asked for a manager to call back and when she called I answered and as soon as I said “hello” she hung up. Then I received an email from her saying that she tried to call me and that I won’t be getting a refund. Very disappointed. Not good business at all. I’ll be going with a different insurance company in the future.
After purchasing travel insurance from Manulife CoverMe, I had an unexpected health event that required me to submit an insurance claim through Manulife Insurance, which appoints Global Excel Management to provide all assistance and claims services under their policy. After countless follow-up phone calls and waiting almost 3 months for a response, I received a letter from Global Excel saying Manulife CoverMe would not reimburse me for the cost of my trip even though I had provided the medical proof necessary to show I could not travel. Manulife and Global Excel have tried to use the excuse that I have a travel voucher as a reason to not reimburse me even though I cannot use the voucher within the specified amount of time. I will be fighting this until I get my money back, even if I have to escalate this to a more public platform to show that Manulife Travel Insurance and Global Excel cannot be trusted to provide customer service for legitimate travel insurance reimbursements. If I could give Manulife a zero out of 5 stars, I would but that is unfortunately not an option. I will keep you all posted.
Hi
My name is Marco from Toronto Canada. I bought Manulife Travel Insurance for my wife, my daughter and myself to go to Mexico for 2 months. At the beginning of December 2021. My wife got a stomach infection ( gastroenteritis ) and I took her to the Mexican Red Cross to the emergency room.
I contacted them using the policy phone number and after 2 hours of waiting, a guy answered me with a very bad attitude as if he would be making me a favour.
He gave me a case number and an email to send the invoices, prescriptions and all the documents from the hospital by email.
I sent them after 2 days around the middle of December 2021. Today It is January 18, 2022. Until now I did NOT get any answer or any payment either.
This Manulife Travel Insurance is terrible. DO NOT waste your money and time on this service. You can be in serious health trouble trusting in this awful company.
There are more options. Take care. Thanks for reading!
Was sold a 60-day recurring covid travel Health insurance plan for my wife and myself in Nov 2021. Was informed after calling them that it is no longer valid due to the government imposing a recommended do not travel. All the other companies I called still honoured their covid travel insurance. Don't buy anything from these crooks. I am phoning to cancel my online Manulife bank accounts today.
I have purchased Manulife travel insurance multiple times for short out-of-country trips to cover our adult children when they have accompanied my husband and me. Since they have never needed to make a claim I was not aware they are not available to contact if the need arises. On his current trip to the US, my son decided to extend his stay. He was eligible to extend his policy but the option is unavailable online and multiple attempts to contact Manulife by phone and email were ignored. In fact, he was disconnected multiple times on multiple days when he attempted. This is the same number one calls for claim assistance! Their slick, quick site to purchase insurance works well but they provide nothing but a false sense of security.
I tried to contact Manulife about my insurance policy over the phone while on my trip and was hung up on twice after being on hold for over two hours. I emailed them about this and they never responded. I’ll never use Manulife for travel insurance ever again, and I’d advise anyone against ever using them.
2 hours wait for a quotation - no answer yet!
My husband got sick while on our vacation in Florida so he went to a hospital. Turns out he had AFib (atrial fibrillation) and he was recommended to get a procedure called an ablation done to hopefully, fix it. Once the insurance agreed to cover the procedure, we had it done. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes 2 procedures for it to work and that's what happened to us, but we decided to wait and do it in Montreal when we returned since the doctors gave him medications that worked also. We still had 2 weeks left that we had paid for from our vacation, so we were planning to stay since he was feeling good, but 2 days after he is released from the hospital, the insurance calls to say we have to return home immediately! My husband was still very weak and he also had a follow-up with the Florida Dr. that week, but they didn't give a damn. They wanted us home and said if we stayed and he got sick again, they would not cover it. They booked a medical flight for me, but they put me in the economy and my husband, accompanied by a doctor, in first class. I pleaded with them to let me sit close to him because he was very nervous and scared, but they refused. I was willing to pay the extra, but they were so anxious to get him home, that there was no room on the flight. Its March, Spring Break, so all flights were booked solid, and to make things worse, it was not even a direct flight. We had a connection in Toronto. How's all that stress good for someone who just had a heart procedure? There was a direct flight the day after, but no matter how much I argued, there was no way in hell they were going to wait another day. I won't go into all the events of the day, like the poor doctor having to wheel around my husband all through 2 airports and me having to drag his medical equipment behind him, because he only had 2 hands, but suffice it to say, it was a long exhausting day! I'm 70 years old so it was hard for me too. That's how they take care of you! We left our Florida condo at almost 10 AM and got home at 11 PM! This is a less than 4 hours flight!!! I will NEVER use Manulife again, nor recommend it to anyone I know, either.
