Dishonest Overpriced Company

by mallard462 on Aug 13, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

I was a customer with this company for 13 years, and recently I had the last of a string of very shady experiences with them.
I saved $500 a year just by switching insurance companies to another one today and I am getting even better coverage with my new company.

As far as their dishonest and shady dealings:

Most recently I received a speeding ticket for doing 76kmph in an 80. Apparently the section I was in was a 50, however the sign was removed for construction over a month and never replaced. I was not from this area so I was unfamiliar with the speed limit sign. Under the highway traffic act the zone is an 80, however the police officer still charged me, knowing they were in the wrong and the whole incident was documented on dash cam with GPS data. I also went to the police station and the captain admitted to me that they were in the wrong but could not reverse the ticket. I ended up having to pay since the amount of money to fight the ticket was not worth it. They lawyer would of been $400, and I would have had to attend court in the town where I got the ticket, which would of costs me $300 in gas and about $400 in lost wages. So instead of $1,100 out of my pocket I paid the fine, since the officer who knew she was in the wrong bumped it down to the minimum fine. So I had no demerit points and it should have been forgotten there. Now with any normal insurance company a no point ticket does not effect you, but not these scammers. Three weeks later I got a letter in the mail informing me my insurance would be increased $250 additional dollars per year, even though I did nothing wrong. The insurance company did not give a crap about my word and they did not care about my evidence. It took me three days to get in contact with anyone to even explain my situation, since they laid off everyone and shut down the offices here and moved it all to a mega-call centre in Toronto. So I did finally get in contact with someone who was unsympathetic and did not care. So after 13 years they could not be bothered to give me the benefit of the doubt. The company I am now switching too is only two thirds the price. I am accident and claim free, and have no demerit points, but Johnson treats me like garbage.

I also had an other incident a couple years ago where someone did a hit and run on my car. Johnson were unsympathetic and treated me like I was a criminal. They would not pay out even a third of what it was worth. The car basically suffered from nothing but a dented quarter panel which could of been fixed for under $2000. So after 10 years of full coverage They tried to write off my car. When that happened I just dropped to basic coverage and fixed it myself. I then drove it for another year and a half before I sold it.

All the good reviews on this site about Johnson from three or four years ago, however they have changed a lot. What a damn joke Johnson has become. I felt that their company was the bane of my existence, so today I stood up and finally switched companies.

Happily Left after 10+years!

Why is it that on August 11, 2015, I am only NOW getting any money for the chiropractic and massage needed as a result of a NO-FAULT accident in February 2014? Oh, and I had a lawyer!

For over a decade I had both my home and auto insurance with UNIFUND. Throughout that time, I found it impossible to get anyone in Richmond Hill's office to respond to my calls or emails (from the advisors on my insurance documents like Joann L. to the person in charge of complaints - Patricia S.) without having to call head office in Newfoundland to complain. Such a hassle! Get it together!!

Although their prices are good, don't let a good deal blindside you.

In 2014 I had my first NO-FAULT accident and this experience was what caused me to leave Johnsons/Unifund for another company. Here are some of the problems I had, as a result of having UNIFUND insurance, with my small NO-FAULT accident:
-adjustor Larry S. incompetence
-adjustor pressured me to visit only UNIFUND approved treatment clinics when I had one already that I trust and visit
-received mail addressed to me with my name and info but about another client's claim, lawyer, and treatments (and I assume they got my info) such a lack of privacy!
-constantly lost faxed documents I or my health clinic sent to them
-would NOT allow documents to be personally delivered since I live in the same town - suspicious
-recorded me down as the driver AT-FAULT, so when I went to shop around for a new insurance company I had to get this cleared up!
-Took 1 year and 6 months to receive money for the Medical and Rehabilitation services that were supposed to be covered by the assigned policy limit of $3500.00 given to me for my accident

So, if you are fine with having to escalate most matters in order to get things resolved (this is costly, stressful and time sucking) and having to spend countless amounts of your OWN money for treatments covered by your policy, then Johnsons/Unifund is for you! Don't be fooled by their great prices, in the end your sanity and care is much more valuable.

Incompetent

Set up insurance with this Johnson for my car. Everything seemed fine with the agent. Tried to pay with a credit card, they said they couldn't accept that. Decided to pay with bank information; gave them everything they needed. Kept getting calls and letters claiming I needed to pay. Kept calling and trying to pay but no one answers after 4 and no one returns calls. When I did get through they said all payments were fine, then I got a call saying I hadn't paid. Never had so much trouble trying to pay a company. Very unorganized and incompetent company, go with someone else if possible. Can't imagine what it would be like if I ever needed to make a claim.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

This place is ridiculous. I had one speeding ticket and after being insured by them for 8 years they automatically put me into their high-risk category with a rate increase of over 200%. They quoted me $600 per month for insurance. Are they crazy? Sure... let me just get out my chequebook and pay for that, no big deal.

The customer service is horrendous. If you call and your 'service advisor' is not there, they send you to random people all across Canada who know absolutely nothing about your file and what you are talking about. When we purchased a new car I spent over 2 hours on the phone being transferred around until someone eventually helped me, although not pleasantly.

A lesson to anyone who wants to be insured through these "big guys"... go through a broker. I was able to get my insurance down to $125 a MONTH vs. the $600 per month they quoted me. As soon as you have an accident/ticket, they take that opportunity to screw you. I will be letting everyone know of this terrible experience.

Worst company to deal with

by JoeT on Feb 27, 2019

WARNING!! DO NOT GET INSURANCE HERE...I got an online quote with this company. Gave them all the needed information. They sent me a package with reasonable rates and an invoice. I called with regard to make a payment but they required way too much information before accepting payment, so I said: never mind the policy, I'll stay with who I'm already with. They continued to demand payment and I called them and explained why I did not continue with them. Now they have collection agencies after me and they also put a non-payment of premiums on my record so I have a hard time getting quotes elsewhere. DO NOT DEAL WITH THESE CROOKS!!!...

Travel Insurance

It appears that I was double billed and this company since August 2018 owes me well over a $1018.00 and I have attempted several times to have this issue rectified to no avail. Each time I call I get a different agent and they won't put me through to the agent I was dealing with and so the process starts all over again. I have been told numerous times that my account is with the finance people and they are creating a cheque for me? It has now been over 2 months and still no resolve. The last time I called I asked for the claims agent manager only to be told he was gone for the day much like my previous claims agent I've spoken with. Small claims court, here we come! If you are smart - don't deal with these individuals!

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Hidden fees and constant scams

Feel like being completely scammed? This insurance company might be right for you! They’ll offer extremely high insurance with lots of fine print additional costs that won’t be mentioned over the phone when you additionally sign up! Feel like escaping the hell hole that you made the mistake of falling into? You can’t! They’ll charge you for the next month’s insurance (even though you won’t be covered that month) and then return SOME* of it back after 3-4 WEEKS (*ofc this is after the penalty fee they never mentioned will be deducted!—mine was $140 for cancelling it ONE MONTH before my policy expired). These losers just can’t wait to steal your money, especially if you tell them over the phone you’re a student and the money they’re taking away from you is going towards the food you need to eat that month!

They are such a rip off

Making online monthly payments as they neglected to withdraw funds from my account and they declined payment. They cancelled my insurance and from a 7 star moved me down to a 1 star. From 100 monthly now 300 monthly with no accidents or claims. They also charged me $352 before they would re-write another policy. Would not explain what that was for.

Terrible experience

They have included home insurance in the policy even though we had home insurance already with another insurer. They have never sent the policy documents claiming that they had the wrong address. When I saw that they were charging me more than they should I called them and only then I found out that home insurance was included. Even though they supposedly rectified the situation they continued to take the incorrect amount from my bank account. Their customer service is extremely rude and poorly trained. Stay away from this company. They are not cheap, they will try to cheat you and their customer service is terrible.
