I had just recently applied on the 19th of March for a secured card and it did take about 3 weeks for them to get back to me with an approval! They are backlogged due to COVID and that is understandable and you do read online that it usually takes 2-3 weeks for a normal application! I had sent the security funds immediately and received the confirmation of funds email the next day, the card should be arriving within 10 days! It's finally nice to have a high-limit card after years of not being able to acquire a high-limit card due to past credit issues. It's a long process but definitely one of the best options for secured cards right after secured cards from the big national banks!
I've had this card for two years. It's my go-to for international travel. Never had any problems so far. I called customer service once to ask for a credit increase since they gave me a ridiculous low start. Customer service was friendly, knowledgeable and fast to get through. They did a soft check so no hit to my score and they doubled the limit.
This card is worth it if you travel.
I noticed some people had negative experiences, but mine was very positive. I got this card just before applying for Consumer Proposal, and I was able to keep it. This is the only good credit card I have on my file. All others are under the proposal and report bad debt/derogatory rating. I still have 3 months before the discharge, and my credit score is 620.
Initially, the downside of this card was I couldn’t use it for contactless payment or add to the ApplePay. They changed it. Another problem is you can’t temporarily increase your limit by overpaying it.
I highly recommend this card if you can afford a minimal security deposit and credit limit of $500. Make sure never to go over 30% of your statement limit, and always pay on time. The card is free, and they report monthly to both credit bureaus. Use it to repair your credit and on rare occasions where prepaid cards or debit cards are not welcome.
Realistically, you don’t need a credit card so often as ten years ago. I’m using my MC debit card for everything. I also have 2 prepaid cards (one of them BMO Prepaid Travel MC) and they work great.
