We were involved in a terrible bus accident in Mexico in which 8 people were killed.
We had a small claim and were given the run around by the terrible customer service.
You're just as better off travelling without travel insurance than dealing with this provider.
Had coverage with another provider, but was unable to get through to extend coverage when the California trip was extended (90 minutes on hold). Out of frustration, purchased Blue Cross online, indicating the start date as the same date as the old policy expired. Days into the time of coverage my son had an accident and needed an x-ray. After an hour on the line with the call center to try to figure out where he should go (they need to authorize prior to treatment), and learning some clinics won't accept Blue Cross, we just paid out of pocket. I then learned there would be no reimbursement as my son was not in his home province when the policy was taken out, and I had somehow missed stating that on the application. Accepting that I was out the $350US for the x-ray, I still needed coverage for the remainder of the trip, but they refused to start a new policy. Avoid Blue Cross! (Why would clinics refuse Blue Cross? That's a strong indicator of a systemic problem that goes beyond my unfortunate experience.)
This company is fantastic if you like paying for a plan and never intend on requiring health insurance. They take your money and do not pay out claims. Furthermore, the process to submit a claim is extremely misleading and convoluted- the adjuster ignores you and then when you seek status updates on your claim they send a list of “missing” documents. The documentation is not listed anywhere in the initial form, even though the initial documentation submitted is substantial. They refuse to give you the name of the adjuster handling your claim. You do everything right and they will reject it. Months to process. Scam artists.
These guys ripped me off! Long story short is by the Canadian laws, if you had travel insurance then you've got provincial insurance covering you, these insurance companies must refund you the rest of the time you have bought from them! I was literally broken then, and finally had our OHIP but these guys refused to refund us even though I extended our insurance with them 1 or 2 weeks before that! Their claim for not refunding us was that we made a claim one time for my daughter when she got sick and took her to the emergency! However, that was in the old contract, not the new one! So when I spoke to a manager on the phone and explained to her that I just extended my insurance to technically it's a new one, she replied that 'you're right, but this is a trick in our policy and I can't help you!' Well, the amount that they were supposed to refund me was about $300. It's not much! But back then, I was literally broken! I used to work 14 hours a day at two jobs to feed my daughter and wife and that $300 made lots of difference to me! Anyway, I'm happy to say that I know more than 25 people from family and friends who came to Canada for long and short visits and the first thing I'd advise them not to do is getting their insurance from the Blue Cross! It'll always be one of the first things I'd tell anyone coming to Canada not to get their insurance from this company!
Blue Cross Insurance is the worst insurance company. Their Individual and travel Plan is a scam, a rip-off. This company collects money only and rejected all my claims, so after three months I cancelled my individual Health Insurance with them and lost three months’ pay. I am happy am out because it was so frustrating with Blue Cross.
Worst ever! I spent 350$ on insurance I went for a trip in Canada. I had a problem with my eye, went to the specialist and pay the fee. After, I call blue cross and they see that it does not cover because I didn't call them... Anyway, I've got a full refund because I cancelled the insurance! NEVER Again Blue Cross!!!
I purchased full coverage health insurance in...2012. And off to Phoenix for the winter we went... I ended up in Casa Grande Hospital with a heart attack. Blue Cross took 1.5 days to ok surgery. They even asked the cardiologist to release me to fly back to Saskatchewan, the doctor would not do it. I kept getting bills for many thousands for months afterwards, I was calling Blue Cross all the time about these bills, finally 8 months later, Blue Cross informed me there won't be any more bills coming to me because they paid for it all. Except the after checkups at the doctors in Arizona. I paid for that. Now, YEARS LATER, this morning March 28th, 2018, I received a phone call from a collection agency wanting the ambulance bill amount of 1800US or it was going to be on my credit bureau. I called Saskatchewan Blue Cross about this bill they did not pay ( I paid for the top coverage they had which included an ambulance ) and...I am not getting anywhere with them...I am getting ahold of my MLA about this...DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY.
I had a fishing boat accident in British Columbia on vacation. My husband fell on my foot reeling in a 60lb halibut. Broke my ankle and had surgery to reattach the bone with two pins. I had purchased Travel Medical Insurance. Blue Cross denied coverage (even with a doctor's prescription) and a transport chair which was needed because the injury was non-weight bearing for eight weeks. Thank goodness I did not fly home. They don't answer their phone, put you on hold forever and don't return your calls. I gave up waiting for them to arrange a flight, so we drove home for seven days to Ontario. Total waste of money purchasing this coverage and the most frustrating experience of my life at a time when I really needed help. Don't be fooled thinking you have coverage through Blue Cross, there is an inter-provincially agreement in Canada that covers most medical and hospital costs anyway if you have OHIP coverage in Ontario. So don't bother depending on them for anything extra because they will find some excuse to deny your claim.
Blue cross is the worst customer experience I have ever had because they are a complete money grab. They make you pay for all of your expenses abroad out of your own pocket, and do not clarify what is under insurance and what is not. "Sudden and unexpected medical conditions" seems great because one would assume that most medical conditions are unexpected and sudden, however, Blue Cross means it so steal your money because to them everything is expected and nothing is sudden! I will never let me, my family or my friends do business with them ever again, you are better off just paying out of your own pocket!
My experience is pretty much like what people said about them. They will put you in a loop of a ridiculous process and in the end, they will refuse your claim. I waited after doing all they asked and when I called them, they said my claim is refused without me telling unless I called? And after all that, the person on the phone won't even help you with what to do next. AVOID THIS COMPANY! Just pay out of pocket and it will save you. I WASTED MONEY SO YOU WON'T!
