Pedestrian hit by drunk driver

by Sad Mother on Aug 13, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

My daughter was hit by a drunk driving a truck. Her body landed 12 feet from the spot where he hit her. This was his 3rd DUI. He probably stayed in jail for about 4 months. She has a permanent brain injury which leaves her fatigued, etc. She has chronic pain from her injuries. She is unable to work. SGI was terrible to deal with. Did not want to help her and more or less told her to learn how to deal with her new reality of life. I think most people think that when something this terrible happens to you that you will be looked after through insurance. We found out this is not so. We need to get rid of SGI.

Disposed Before Settlement

by Gary on Jun 29, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

SGI has disposed of my van and the claim has not been settled. Note it is still within the two year time period to settle. I had personal items in the van and SGI has been hardballing me on the price. They sent me a web site evaluation for $4550 and then promptly told me that it was only worth around $2200.
They are now up to $3300 less the $700 deductible. They are not making any comment on my personal items.
Now I am presented with the cost of a professional arbitrator which I have no idea where or what that will cost or if it would be worthwhile.
I asked SGI for what they got for the van when it was disposed and they remain quiet.

SGI a bunch of idiots

RE SGI is evil,
My advice to you is get on your computer and start finding comparable sales for your vehicle. I would also tell SGI you want to save your vehicle and you are not accepting their lame offer to write off your vehicle. (Oh sure you can buy it back and go thru inspections to re insure your vehicle but keep in mind this action could be a potential nightmare). Inform SGI you want to go to arbitration then hire an arbitrator! You will have to fill out a form in regards to what you think your vehicle is worth, your arbitrator should help you with this. Google vehicle appraisers or look in the yellow pages under auto appraisers/arbitrators. I went down this road last fall it was the best $250.00 I have ever spent. After winning my case my SGI adjuster calls me and acts like my best friend telling me how great it is that my vehicle is being fixed etc. Please! Hire an arbitrator!

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Absolutely brainless

According to the SGI and police, if a police does not clock the speeds of the vehicles in a crash, you have no ability to state the other party was speeding. So, in short, there's no difference between a 1 km/h crash and a 1000 km/h UNLESS there is a cop to clock the speeds. Remember that next time, that in the off chance a police officer pulls you over for "speeding" and he didn't clock you, that he can't legally issue you a ticket.

Furthermore, they compare your vehicle to ambiguous Kijiji adds comparable to your vehicle. The vehicle ads will not display their VIN (SGI won't even obtain the VIN's for every vehicle listed on their comparison list while they call you crazy for requesting a simple verification of those ads) on the comparison sheet for your write-off, nor do they show pictures of said vehicles. This provides a open spot for people to scam SGI and falsely make ads on Kijiji of their exact vehicle model, post them on Kijiji for outrageous sums of money and then receive a lump sum BASED solely on the invalid ads SGI checks. Very professional and well done.

Overall, I'm receiving less money for my vehicle than what I put into insurance for a vehicle that was rated all good on all sections of the SGI inspection. This does not make sense as someone who pays 1000$ for a 30,000$ vehicle will receive 80% of 30,000$ for merely 1000$ per year of insurance. Sure, this is good for rich people, but SGI is essentially a social construct meant to be GREAT insurance for LOW price. However, thanks to right wing, it's not that way anymore, and they don't operate at cost and work in gold plated sky scrapers.

Would recommend public transportation or cycling. You're better off disturbing with a pair of in-lines or bicycles than dealing with no-fault insurance OR mindless babble about how all the hard evidence you have is invalid because they say so.

Terrible company

Absolutely appalling. Deny claims for no reason, even when supported by written witnesses and legal declarations and statements from their brokers, with no appeals or recourse. Cheap rates, but you get what you pay for. They are fine as long as they are getting your money, but if you need service, get a lawyer. Worst insurance company on the planet.

No benefit for over 13 years

by princessgirl on Aug 11, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

After sustaining a severe brain injury from an accident, I did not receive a benefit for over 13 years from SGI called Living Assistance despite my doctors, support staff, Occupational Therapist, rehabilitation workers, myself and my parents asking for help over the years. And SGI always declined without a written decision letter. Following a request, one injury note reads in part “… All in all, I did not okay any homecare, as it doesn’t seem warranted from our conversation, especially when she has two days off a week, and I’m sure she doesn’t sleep the entire time. Also, the fact that she has not received homecare in the past, I did not want to open up a can of worms. I’ll leave this to you Darlene to look after.” My parents (in their 60s and 70s) were travelling over 940 km round trip (often taking shifts; 1 parent helping me while another parent was at home taking care of my sister who was mentally handicapped, dealing with a business and household responsibilities. My father was also terminally ill and his doctor only gave him 5 years to live; he only lived half of that. SGI knew all this as this was written in my injury notes.) When SGI started to give the benefit to me years later (only after bypassing my adjuster and sending an email for help to her supervisor), I was given some help. SGI gave the adjuster early retirement (provable in court) and then it took them a year to find a new adjuster to replace her. (It has never taken that long to replace an adjuster) I thought it was a brand-new benefit because I never heard of it before. After my Occupational therapist decided what I needed, SGI reduced my benefit by about 70%. I had enough money for one day of work after they reduced my benefit significantly. I did go to court, but the court system is designed to favour SGI as documented by a legal document called "Cash and Crash". I could not get costs paid for my parents because the court did not have jurisdiction over damages. And I could not get all my court costs paid for. While the amount I got in court was a significant amount of money (paragraph 104- 110), it did not cover the cost of helping with my bottleneck from not receiving my benefit for all those years and repaying my parents for their costs and other things. After the decision letter from the commission and the one month that I had to re-appeal, SGI gave me over 9 adjusters in that one month. SGI did state they would help me with my bottleneck from the 13 years I did not get Living Assistance. So I thought why to continue with court action if SGI is willing to help me as well as the fact both my support workers and my doctors were telling me it was causing me to decompensate and problems with my therapy. But as soon as the time lapsed to re-appeal the decision, SGI’s story soon changed. They would not help me at all. Yes, I am receiving my living assistance but it is not enough to cover all my expenses to clean up my bottleneck. So, my parents aren’t paying just once. They are paying twice by helping me clean up the bottleneck. Do you really want to get insurance from a company that did not give a claimant a benefit (knowingly) for over 13 years?

Terrible company

I was driving at dusk in the foothills with my daughter and a group of elk came out of the ditch, ran across the road and one ran into the side of my new truck. Banged up the drivers side doors pretty badly. I filed a claim and my daughter provided a witness statement. SGI refused the claim, saying they would only pay for a deer strike if there was an independent witness who was not in the truck. Not sure how many people wander around in the foothills at night watching for deer strikes, apparently the strikes accepted by SGI only happen in Calgary where there are no deer. I called my their ombudsman and was told to go away. Worlds worst insurance company

I was in a wreck were my truck accelerated uncuntrolably I intentionally hit the ditch to miss a oncoming truck the rcmp found no fault and I wasn't charged. Skip to may 30 I go in to get my truck estimate and to see my adjuster and I have a recording of her saying yes the 2005 colorado did have a recall point for a throttle problem but since its an older truck it shouldnt have happened so i handed in some print outs of similar events where the truck accelerated uncuntrolably. June 16 I find out I am 100% accountable for the wreck. June 23 I asked for a higher up they called me and stated that there was no recall on 2005 l5 colorado throttle control only the v8...... no v8s in 05.

SGI is evil

Two years ago someone hit me from behind when I was stopping at a red light and SGI said it was my fault as my story and the other drivers story didn't match. They told me to take the guy to a small cliam court. They took points of my license and made me pay for each point as well as my deductable.
To mak my life more misreable, last week someone hit my car when it was parked on the street and the driver ran away. It probably happened overnight as there are no witnesses. I took my car for assessment and the assessor started accussing me that this is not a hit a run. He is claiming that I hit my car with concrete. The assessor also was trying to make me change my statement threatening that if the truth doesn't come out SGI won't cover my claim. I told him why would I lie, I am paying for extended insurance and my deductables is only $100 and he started making face and he embaressed me infront of other people at the claim centre. I am not sure what to do, my car is supposed to be written off and now I will lose $16,000.00. Why are they so evil? The assessor was son of a Satan. What is he lying on his report?

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Claims

I got in an accident and was not at fault. My car is a 1997 so I asked that my receipts be accepted into the estimate so I can get the proper value for my car because it seems it is cutting it close to being "totaled" despite it being drivable. The claims rep does not want my receipts. I am aware that previous damages mean where the driver hit me they do not have to fix, but I ask myself why I pay insurance then. that is a personal opinion. I am also finding it very hard to believe that my car is valued so low and because of that I am not able to get a car rental. I am not at fault here and the service I have received over the phone, the tone seemed like it was my fault. I want to keep my car and I pay insurance very year, and even when I get hit by other drivers I have to pay damages that were existing but got WORSE by them, and I don't get rental while by car is being fixed. This is disgusting.
