Some bumps but overall great

by 123 on Dec 8, 2020
3.7 out of 5 stars

There were mistakes with my claim and the timing was a bit lengthy, HOWEVER, once we voiced our concerns, I found the staff to be incredibly genuine, kind and approachable. They sorted the concerns and completed the process with efficiency, respect and kindness. We were very impressed at how quickly they fixed things and grateful for their actions to make it right.

No benefit for over 13 years

by princessgirl on Aug 11, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

After sustaining a severe brain injury from an accident, I did not receive a benefit for over 13 years from SGI called Living Assistance despite my doctors, support staff, Occupational Therapist, rehabilitation workers, myself and my parents asking for help over the years. And SGI always declined without a written decision letter. Following a request, one injury note reads in part “… All in all, I did not okay any homecare, as it doesn’t seem warranted from our conversation, especially when she has two days off a week, and I’m sure she doesn’t sleep the entire time. Also, the fact that she has not received homecare in the past, I did not want to open up a can of worms. I’ll leave this to you Darlene to look after.” My parents (in their 60s and 70s) were travelling over 940 km round trip (often taking shifts; 1 parent helping me while another parent was at home taking care of my sister who was mentally handicapped, dealing with a business and household responsibilities. My father was also terminally ill and his doctor only gave him 5 years to live; he only lived half of that. SGI knew all this as this was written in my injury notes.) When SGI started to give the benefit to me years later (only after bypassing my adjuster and sending an email for help to her supervisor), I was given some help. SGI gave the adjuster early retirement (provable in court) and then it took them a year to find a new adjuster to replace her. (It has never taken that long to replace an adjuster) I thought it was a brand-new benefit because I never heard of it before. After my Occupational therapist decided what I needed, SGI reduced my benefit by about 70%. I had enough money for one day of work after they reduced my benefit significantly. I did go to court, but the court system is designed to favour SGI as documented by a legal document called "Cash and Crash". I could not get costs paid for my parents because the court did not have jurisdiction over damages. And I could not get all my court costs paid for. While the amount I got in court was a significant amount of money (paragraph 104- 110), it did not cover the cost of helping with my bottleneck from not receiving my benefit for all those years and repaying my parents for their costs and other things. After the decision letter from the commission and the one month that I had to re-appeal, SGI gave me over 9 adjusters in that one month. SGI did state they would help me with my bottleneck from the 13 years I did not get Living Assistance. So I thought why to continue with court action if SGI is willing to help me as well as the fact both my support workers and my doctors were telling me it was causing me to decompensate and problems with my therapy. But as soon as the time lapsed to re-appeal the decision, SGI’s story soon changed. They would not help me at all. Yes, I am receiving my living assistance but it is not enough to cover all my expenses to clean up my bottleneck. So, my parents aren’t paying just once. They are paying twice by helping me clean up the bottleneck. Do you really want to get insurance from a company that did not give a claimant a benefit (knowingly) for over 13 years?

SGI is a Scam

by SGI canada IS thecWORST on May 18, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

SGI is the worst insurance company I have ever had after being insured for 30 years with several other companies. After filing a claim I found out my coverage was insufficient and I was not protected adequately + the payment for my stolen vehicle will be greatly reduced where I will have to pay tons of money to replace it. The horrible company selling joke policies. Bye-bye SGI Canada forever!

Unprofessional and rude

by SGIisAjoke1994 on Mar 24, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

Every single person I have met that works for SGI are extremely unprofessional, rude and corrupt. Even going so far as to give their own family members and friends automatic passes on driving and written tests in my area (between Rosetown and Kindersley Sask) and being extremely rude, temperamental, intrusive and even vulgar at times. Over the phone, they’re even worse. You will be, interrupted, degraded, talked down to and treated like a child in 2nd grade. This company needs to be shutdown or better yet sued into bankruptcy. I seriously recommend anyone working for SGI to take a good long look in the mirror and think about their life choices and morals.

Preys on the Elderly

by Toronto Resident on Mar 15, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

My elderly parents were victims of a phoney hit & run on a day when they had never left their house. SGI did not attempt to fully investigate the situation and filed a 100% at-fault decision within 5 business days. When follow-up attempts were made, they were unresponsive. Terrible company with terrible ethics. Beware and stay away.

Terrible Company

Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, SGI made them worse. We had an unfortunate incident with a piece of our insured property getting damaged. SGI begrudgingly paid for the damages, but, they are now threatening to sue the individual supposedly “at fault” for causing the damage.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

So, my neighbor decided to make a claim against me for something I did not do. In the end SGI found me guilty and I had to pay for something i did not do. I even got a paint match which came back negative and I was still at fault...

Still trying to get rental

by Viktor on Jul 2, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

I Have a 2019 Lexus Nx300 f2 sport which was smoking in the garage for about 5 hours when my garage caught on fire... Ontario province... They didn't give me the rental same day, it was on 22nd of June, and on Monday when I reached their office because they were closed on weekends, the adjuster answer kinda surprised me when I said that I need a rental, she told me that I have 2 cars... Unprofessional at all... I pay insurance for both... After they ended up giving me rental on Monday when I called after hours and I returned it on Wednesday because we were going on vacation... Now I am trying to get a rental from 10 am and my adjuster seems to be ignoring me... Wish I can put - 100stars... Will switch my cars insurance after solving claim for sure... Been calling about 20 different numbers. Don't know what to do. My time worth more... Good thing my wife is a lawyer... Recording every call now...

SGI - Westland Insurance

by 99metaller99 on Apr 5, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

Got an online quote from SGI. Phoned Westland Insurance in Calgary who told me SGI did not offer monthly payment plan. Phoned SGI and they said yes, they do and that I should have been given the plan. Stay far far away from Westland Insurance brokers, and stay even further away from SGI Canada. I was insured through a broker with SGI a few years back and blew the engine in my truck leaving me with my other vehicle to drive. I faxed them and cancelled my insurance on the truck because I couldn't drive it. Westland refused to rebate me for 9 months of insurance for the cancellation. I got a hold of SGI and was finally paid my rebate after 10 months from the time of the cancellation. SGI is the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Please for your sake stay away from them.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Rude staff everywhere

Took my vehicle without even informing where they gonna keep it. Got pictures from SGI with snow all filled in the vehicle as it was lying in a compound for a long weekend (it's a joke as if they would have told me prior that they gonna keep my vehicle in open, I would have dragged it to the garage). Adjuster initially appointed went on for 3 weeks vacation since my claim was filled. No communication at all (till you call in and ask). Their estimators cant value anything
