LTD claim denied

by Jenny M Howard, CPA, CA on Jan 4, 2018
1.5 out of 5 stars

Sun Life will raise any excuse to deny valid LTD claims. I am currently being treated for depression, anxiety and job burnout by my GP and therapist. Both have given the medical diagnosis to Sun Life and extensive information and forms. Doesn't matter, drag out the claim process, say not enough information, then deny the claim. I am a hardworking professional (accountant) who has a strong work ethic (see burnout above). The fact that my employer has paid into this company for 10+ years on my behalf, only to then be denied upon valid medical leave and financial need is unconscionable. This industry needs to examine its' reasons for doing business. These guys are a bunch of crooks and the press should really get a hold of this story.

Don't give these crooks a dime

by Yourworstnightmare on Dec 10, 2017

Wow! Somehow these crooks are legally operating here in Canada. My little sister was severely damaged in a car accident... Been off work for a year and a half... She had asked to see a concussion specialist... For her concussion... But was DENIED the help she needed... Was then referred to a specialist through Sun Life... Who then wrote lies on her medical charts which then forced her back to work.... Where she sat in a dark corner hiding from the harsh lights and sounds... Finally was sent home and then this company... Whom she's paid in thousands for years... Cuts her benefits, so she's now unable to have a Christmas, care for her baby... It's sick! This company is criminal

LTD disappointments

by Disappointed on Nov 17, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I want to start by saying... How is my car dealership, my car insurance company & my local garage, all together, are offering me better customer service & show me much more value than my own life insurance service??? I strongly believe that my own life costs more than my car but now I am questioning myself... Can my car be more valuable than me? I am getting such a poor experience with Sun Life that I am starting to believe that my life must not mean a thing to them! The way I get passive-aggressive responses from them just to get a confirmation of my file or ask when will I get my payment, builds up more stress than speaking to an automatic message for a phone service... like... where did we go wrong? They talk to you like you don't matter to them... not one bit. They encourage financial stress & anxiety by not responding on time or delaying your pay as if your life does not depend on it. They keep saying they will respond back to you within 24 to 48hrs but you only get an answer 1month later & that's simply because you attempted at least 4 times to reach out to them over and over again! Where is the willingness to help, the empathy, loyalty & human care? Does it exist in the Sun Life values or culture? 1year ago my life flipped on me in one fraction of second... I woke up paraplegic when 12hrs prior to that I was one of the most active healthiest people on earth. You would think Sun Life would have sympathy for someone like me and would try to make things easier & smooth things out for us but during my 1year convalescence, they were the cause of the most stressful moments of my recovery. Can someone please figure this out for me? How is your life insurance that is supposed to help you throughout the most difficult moment of your life be the one making it so hard for you to get through? I guess I'll let Sun Life give me an answer on that one.

Terrible Experience

by FrustratedMom on Oct 23, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I was out on STD from June 3rd to August 14th. I fought with them the entire month of June and beginning of July before I even saw a payment. It was days and weeks of being told "so and so" will call you back within 24 hours. I finally get back to work and then I send them the return to work letter, 4 days PRIOR to when I was returning to work and they still submitted payment for that week I returned to work. Now they say I owe them repayment. I said that was due to their error not mine and now she says she will continue to move forward to collections. I am disgusted with this company's lack of customer service, lack of urgency, lack of care, lack of compassion and lack of ability to get anything done properly. Do not use this company if you can afford it at all.

Stand up for your rights!

From personal experience, and after reading all of the comments on here and other sites, I have to agree , that Sun Life is a very unprofessional company, to say the least. I have no idea how the employees of this company can live with themselves, when they are affecting people's lives so negatively. So many people who make disability claims have to fight to get it, to prove that they are unwell (even with a ton of medical documentation and support), which does not help them to get better, in any way. This company will drag out your claim, and jerk you around, until you get a lawyer involved. They are essentially bullies. They will take all the time in the world to respond to you (if they even do, at all), yet expect you to get your paperwork in, in a very short time frame. Don't waste your time, going back and forth with them, on your own. If you are declined, and have a legitimate case, get a lawyer, and stand up to them. No matter how dire one's financial situation is, a good lawyer will not take anything up front, so it is well worth getting one. From all the comments I have heard&read, it would be interesting to see if a class action lawsuit would be done...see people band together and show this company that they can't keep getting away with their shady practises. Not only do they decline people, and negatively impact their lives/finances and health, but they keep getting away with it, because they know they can. More people need to stand up for their rights.

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM!

by scamed_by_sunlife on Sep 14, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Stay as far, far away from this scam insurance company as you can..
DO NOT BELIEVE any of the other positive posts anywhere about this company, they are all fake and probably padded by the workers themselves.

They take your money and provide you with NOTHING! not even a call back and totally ignore you if you file a claim, contracts mean nothing to these crooks, to this date I have 4 so called "senior caseworkers" on my case over 3 months and NONE of them answer their phones nor return calls, EVER!

They constantly want more information from your doctor, then challenge your doctor's prescriptions, challenge your surgeon's surgery results, challenge your physiotherapist results, even challenge your cardiologist findings, everything and anything just to delay then deny your claim, these people are scum and treat you without respect like dirt, they are pre programed to NOT pay out your claim.

DON'T BUY THEIR WORTHLESS POLICIES!..
You WILL be so sorry later if you do.

Digusted with Lack of Service

by Civil Servant on Sep 6, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I am a Civil Servant with a group policy through Sun Life. I was involved in a high speed MVA (no fault of my own deemed by ICBC) by a driver under the influence who fled the scene. I have a RCMP file number and a lawyer looking into my case.

My injuries are severe including a concussion with very slow progress. I applied in April and my claim was denied in August even though final tests results were not sent to my doctor yet. I have appealed with new information from 2 medical professionals stating my incapacity and I am unable to perform my duties. It has taken until end of June before I even heard back from a Sun Life rep. only because I placed a phone call.

My claim has passed through multiple agents including one of the first agents recording of "this will be approved." The agent has now mysteriously disappeared and my claim has passed through the hands of 4 other agents with another agent being removed from my file and then another agent denying my claim.

I have contacted a manager and will be moving forward to contacting her Director and will keep going upwards including the media in this and involving ministers in this matter.

I have been a civil serv. for over 30 years and have been fortunate enough to never have to utilize the services of Sun Life. I also have a disability which I have managed through the help of my physicians and myself that is not related to this incident. I cannot believe the lack of service and empathy on Sun Lifes part and I am very disgusted with how they handle claims.

I have used all sick benebits available and now have no income. I have now been told it can take 30 days for the appeal process. I have placed a urgent call to this "new" agent and I am waiting to hear back.

If anyone out there is considering a health policy I suggest you may want to look else where than with them. I would not want anyone to have to go through the horrible stress that I am going through with this company. I had no choice to use them as that is who the Federal Government uses.

Disgusting! Disgrace!

by csjray on Aug 10, 2017

Denied my LTD based on ONE sentence in my 1,000 page medical record, and the sentence the chose was used COMPLETELY out of context. They manipulate the information you give them (IF they admit that they received it). My "agent" had ZERO personality and was WRETCHED to deal with.

Ultimately had to hire an attorney to get the monies owed to me. During holidays they don't plan ahead and send checks early. Oh no no! They just allow payments to be late and then blame it on the "holiday delay". Awful!! They should be forced out of business!

Worst company ever

by DMWM on Jul 30, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

The only reason I gave them a 1 is because I can't give them ZERO. It is going on two months since my claim was made to this company. They have done nothing but give me the run around. You send the info they request for them to say yes it's received and being reviewed. You don't hear back from them and you are then told oh no. We never received the info. This is needed to review your claim. I have been dealing with this for almost 2 months after severe injuries sustained in a head on collision. I know have had to involve a lawyer to assist me in getting my claim resolved. This has not only drained me emotionally, but my family. It is hard enough recovering from injuries without having to deal with a company who is not interested in resolving your claim. This has been a nightmare. I never would recommend this company for any insurance purposes.

Problematic Company Culture

by Louis_Karl on Jul 14, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I have been dealing with this insurance company through my own company and I have to say that their company culture is highly problematic. I went on long-term disability and I had issues regarding both drugs and disability.

Now, while complaints and issues happen with all insurances, the problem with Sun Life Financial is the way they do things. Not only do they seem to attract incompetent people ( 3/3 never returned calls/ e-mails over the course of weeks), they won't let you change whoever is assigned to your case, effectively stonewalling you in case things go bad.

For example, I was refused to be insured for a drug because it had the wrong code (never mind the fact that it was a refill of a drug that had been insured the other time). When I escalated this situation to the supervisor, I was told they would find the right code with the pharmacy. 6 weeks, 5 calls later, that supervisor, Mrs. X, is absolutely unreachable. Worst, whenever I called to ask to get in touch with Mrs. X's colleague or boss through the customer service, I was told it would be done before being transferred to Mrs. X's voicemail.

In the end, Mrs.X seemed to not appreciate my behavior of searching for a resolution as she called back and said there was nothing to do.

I've written enough for a review, but I have a similar experience with the disability department, letting me know that it's a company wide problem, not just a single person problem.

Word of advice: Avoid like the plague.
