WORST. EVER!!!

by Kevin on Dec 28, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I had Sun Life insurance provided through my employer. I was off work due to an ongoing and debilitating degenerative back. After being on long-term disability for a term, I was still deemed disabled by my doctors. Sun Life disagreed and said I was capable of doing SOMETHING. I had only ever been an equipment operator, so I had no other marketable skills. Sun Life in their infinite wisdom put me through a Microsoft office crash course and said I now had skills to be employed elsewhere. Despite my arguments that I was typing at 15wpm and had the most basic of understanding of computers, they stuck to their guns and discontinued my benefits. I hope they all have to go through bankruptcy like I did because of this.

Thomas Jefferson was wrong... all men are not created equal. Montreal Sun Life Disability office is evidence that some are less equal between the ears at least. Terrible service and BAD attitude towards people that pay them.

AVOID SUN LIFE

by Giselle2018 on Sep 5, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

AVOID THIS COMPANY. I’ve been paying into my benefits, you’d think the least they can do is take a phone call from me and give me some information on my claim. I’ve been in the process of filing a disability claim for almost a month now and all I’m trying to do is check the status (when I should be receiving money as I’ve been off of work now for over a month due to high-risk pregnancy) and every time I call, someone tells me they can’t access my information because my file is handled in another office and I’m tired of being transferred over there to a voicemail. The same number that I’ve called twice before and was able to speak to someone who was able to access my file is the same number I’m calling again and it’s taking me all over Ontario and no one can access my information. Does Vancouver not have a customer service centre with people who actually pick up the phone like Waterloo or Toronto or Halifax or Montreal does?? Every time I’m transferred to Vancouver, I’m forwarded to a voicemail. This is so ridiculous I’ve never experienced this before, this is the WORST customer service and everyone I speak to is telling me something different. I don’t even know why my file is being handled in Vancouver when I live in Toronto. They even have an online option where you can “track your claim” and every time I go to look, it shows me that I supposedly haven’t filed a claim in the last 90 days. When I finish sorting this out, I'm CANCELLING and switching somewhere better, this is a disgusting service. Been off of work for so long and I’m due in 3 weeks and I can’t even enjoy a peace of mind like these insurance companies claim to give you whenever you need your.... behind.... covered. 0 STARS. I’m leaving this review anywhere I can so people can avoid this stress.

LTD Coverage DENIED

by ToyotaKid on Apr 21, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

After dealing with a serious cardiac issue, and returning to work before the end of my Short-term benefits, I have since been hospitalized TWICE for the same condition. Now that I will be looking to use LTD for a short time until I'm able to return to work, Sun Life delayed and stalled for a month after being sent all the information from my Dr as requested. After a month of delays and no income, my "rep" decided to pass my file to their "Health Partner" (AKA: A Doctor they pay to deny claims) for review. This so-called "partner" OVERRULED my Doctor and Cardiologists findings and have denied my coverage. I am not well enough to return to work yet, as my Dr indicated, and now over 2 months later, I am still in the "appeals" process. No income, for 3 months, maxed out CC's, used all my savings to survive...And still no resolution. This is a very common game they play... Stall and delay and bully you until you're unable to remain off work any longer due to financial pressures, regardless of your health. I have 8 co-workers who have had to retain a lawyer in order to receive BENEFITS THAT YOU PAY FOR. How this company hasn't been sued out of existence is beyond me. They are immoral and unsympathetic, and their "customer service" is absolutely appalling. ZERO STARS

Disgusted and Confused

by DisappointedCustomer on Apr 10, 2018

I only have Sun Life because of the company I work for. I had surgery and I submitted ALL necessary COMPLETED paperwork back in Feb. I had surgery in March and it is now April and I STILL have not received my disability. Sun Life claim to have needed info from me that they already had in file. They told me it would take 5 days to have my claim assigned. I called 4 days later and my claim still had not been assigned! They're saying they dropped the ball and it will take another 5 days to be assigned and additional time to have my claim approved so I can finally receive my benefits. By the time I receive my benefits, I will be back at work. I can not begin to explain how disappointed and disgusted I am with this company. My disability is my only form of income while I'm out of work and they're basically telling me there is nothing I can do about it even though they dropped the ball! This is absurd and Sun Life should be investigated! I'm committed to exploring every outside option I can to have them take responsibility for their actions. If an individual pay monthly for your insurance, you should at least have the decency to pay out in a timely efficient manner! Shame on you Sun Life!

Covered or Not?

When you call you're asked for a bunch of numbers you probably don't have. Employees act frustrated to have to look you up by name etc. Finding your info online is impossible and when you call they have difficulty telling you what kind of coverage you even have. I was transferred 3 times to be told they didn't know if I had any disability coverage on the group insurance option I selected. You might say I should know this but employers often ask you to complete your selections within a week of starting your new job. A brochure or at least clear coverage information should be available to you to review at any time. I'm disappointed in this company and think they should be more user-friendly.

LTD claim denied

by Jenny M Howard, CPA, CA on Jan 4, 2018
1.5 out of 5 stars

Sun Life will raise any excuse to deny valid LTD claims. I am currently being treated for depression, anxiety and job burnout by my GP and therapist. Both have given the medical diagnosis to Sun Life and extensive information and forms. Doesn't matter, drag out the claim process, say not enough information, then deny the claim. I am a hardworking professional (accountant) who has a strong work ethic (see burnout above). The fact that my employer has paid into this company for 10+ years on my behalf, only to then be denied upon valid medical leave and financial need is unconscionable. This industry needs to examine its' reasons for doing business. These guys are a bunch of crooks and the press should really get a hold of this story.

Terrible Experience

by FrustratedMom on Oct 23, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I was out on STD from June 3rd to August 14th. I fought with them the entire month of June and beginning of July before I even saw a payment. It was days and weeks of being told "so and so" will call you back within 24 hours. I finally get back to work and then I send them the return to work letter, 4 days PRIOR to when I was returning to work and they still submitted payment for that week I returned to work. Now they say I owe them repayment. I said that was due to their error not mine and now she says she will continue to move forward to collections. I am disgusted with this company's lack of customer service, lack of urgency, lack of care, lack of compassion and lack of ability to get anything done properly. Do not use this company if you can afford it at all.

Save your money

This is a shame of an operation. They are happy to collect from hard-working Canadians, however, when it comes to assistance, they look for any reason not to cover you. They discriminate against those with disabilities and their staff is completely incompetent at assessing what a disability is. They are clearly a for-profit organization looking to pad their pockets out of the pockets of those that are foolish enough (like me) to have them as an insurance provider. If you find it acceptable to throw money in the trash then this is the insurance provider for you. Too bad they can't receive a zero rating as that's what this shame is worth. You are far better off sinking your money into lotto tickets as at least that way you may be provided with some form of financial support.

WORST COMPANY!!!

by CC2007 on May 23, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I am 27 years old and had an accident, I broke a bone in my leg and needed surgery and needed to be off work in order to be bed rested for 3 months. The company I work for, our insurance is Sun Life. When seeing my doctor, he decided to extend my leave as I would need a month to learn how to walk, drive, go up the stairs etc. I sent all my documents to Sun Life to extend my leave, they decided to decline it and not call me to advise me, it's been over a month now of trying to reach them to get an update and finally they advise that the documents I had sent were not sufficient. Apparently, a letter from the doctor, xrays, physio reports, surgical details were not sufficient. I have to pay $200 for Physio a week and not getting paid is not helping my situation even if the doctors' orders are to be off work to get strong again. I am 27 years old, you really think I enjoy staying in bed in pain?? I'd rather be at work. They are honestly the worst company ever, unreliable and have ZERO compassion for people on sick leave. Not only do I need to stress if I will have a normal life again, I need to stress with calling Sun Life on a weekly basis and pray that I get paid. IT'S DISGUSTING!! I really hope they don't treat clients that have a worse case than me like this. They are just ANIMALS!
