Health and Dental Nightmare

by Robin PS on Dec 18, 2018
1.5 out of 5 stars

Unfortunately, I have negative things to share about my experiences with GWL. Not only have they made me jump through hoops for both dental and medical coverage, they have not honoured a predetermination as they say they need “more information” which is clearly a stalling tactic. My doctor has appealed meds coverage twice, I’ve appealed twice and they only come back with “we just don’t cover that med.” Not even a generic. I hate to say but I am going to try and opt out of this coverage because it’s horrible. Very very disappointed and extremely dissatisfied.

Policy not honoured

by Blubaru on Dec 17, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

This is about "Drug Insurance", which is not available in the Product type. The Ontario Pension Board's Ontario Public Service Pension Plan drug coverage is supposed to be 90% but Great-West Life Assurance has applied a $1,000/year limit on a specific drug. The information available from the Ontario Pension Board and from the Great-West Life Assurance's GroupNet websites state that the drug coverage is 90% without any exception. Great-West Life will not provide the insurance policy, only a sketchy self-excusing letter explaining the limit using Health Canada and other excuses to deny payment for copayment coverage for a drug I have been taking for at least 13 years at the same dosage. My doctor submitted a form requested by Great-West Life Assurance in which the reason for prescribing and the dosage was stated, which Great-West Life Assurance rejected. Great-West Life Assurance is dishonest. Ultimately, this will probably be settled in small claims court. It isn't just about the small amount of money involved, it is the principle that the information presented by the Ontario Pension Board and Great-West Life Assurance state specific coverage, which is not being honoured and, if there is an exception, that information is not provided, and the supposed exception to 90% coverage is for a different condition for the prescribed drug. The Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat is a party to the insurance policy agreement and will be named as a party in a small claims court lawsuit. If this is resolved in small claims court, it will cost Great-West Life Assurance and the taxpayer of Ontario a lot more money than the outstanding unreimbursed amount.

Terrible support

by pinball_wizard on Sep 26, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Calling in to their customer support will guarantee you to wait on the phone, as their call centre seems both understaffed and underqualified. Also the call centre agents are oblivious to my benefits and insisted I contact the HR of the company I am working for - what is their customer support centre's purpose then?

Website provides minimal information regarding group benefits plan to see what my coverage is. Coverage is pretty terrible for the money, some of the worst that I've seen from any group plans so far. Dental claims are often delayed or denied with no clear explanation. To give them credit, getting a pair of subscription glasses went moderately well, but even that somehow took longer than 4 weeks to process.

Request For More Information

by STAY AWAY FROM GWL!!! on Jan 11, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

The most crooked and unprofessional company I've unfortunately had to deal with. They do everything they can to make you give up on receiving compensation. I had my dentist submit a pre determination claim outlining work I needed done. They reviewed and accepted the pre determination within a week. After treatment the actual claim was submitted and it sat for over a week before they posted the "request for more information notice" so I called to see what this is about and all they could tell me was to keep waiting to receive something in the mail I should of gotten by now. I haven't received anything in the mail and follow up phone calls are not returned or if I get through to an agent they rush you off the phone without any answers. They make it clear they aren't here to help you. Im pulling out of their benefits program asap and doing everything I can to get my company onto a better provider.

worst company

This is the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of having to deal with have been trying to set up my benefits package for a years time now with no response other than a number with a reference code that don't exist. They have bin deducting money from my pay cheques for the entire time and tell me I have no benefits with their company and that they have no record of me at all in their system. I would recommend everybody to steer the hell clear from this company.

They are making me jump through hoops to recover my $. 700 bucks for custom orthotics they are resisting reimbursement when I have a clinical diagnosis of plantar fascitis. GWL does not provide quality health coverage. Gwl is a terrible disappointment. Gwl sucks and are very unhelpful.

Dishonest, Horrible, Crooked

Avoid them at all costs. They will request Dr. letters for your claim and when you provide them with the requested professional medical opinion they will deny your claim. The appeal process is also a waste of time .

Request for information

by KrazyK on Jun 13, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

GWL is nothing more than a corporate sponge. It does a great job of stealing workers money and requesting more information on every claim that you try and put through. After doing nine backflips, 40 jumping jacks and 60 sit-ups you might get paid. This company should be ashamed of themselves. Notice how all the good reviews have little information. That is because they are most likely done by GWL staff.

They will request your correct address by mailing you the notice to your address! I don't get it? Am I stupid or something? Then when you tell them your address which is where they mailed it to they send you another request for information form for the same claim.

Complete corporate gangsters and our union the IBEW shouldn't give these crooks a penny!

Do not get insurance with GWL.

This is the worst of the worst. Was put on short term disability for heart issue, doctor would not renew my licence and I drive truck for a living. Had to wait 7 1/2 weeks for first pay cheque, and was about 1/4 of what I made. The Evil witch that looked after my claim could not give a care of my condition, she told me that I was running out of short term disability and if I applied for long term disability I probably would not get it, because not being able to drive is not covered, and I live 50 miles from work.
I had several claims with this company, because the company I work for goes with GWL, and every time just very negative. One time had dentist work done and was in the dentist chair, and dentist was doing work on my teeth, they tried submitting claim to see if I would be covered, and GWL wanted to talk to me to ask me a bunch of personal questions to verify it was me, I felt like 2 inches tall. The only people I would recommend this company to is my enemy's.

GWL covers absolutely nothing

by lefred on May 16, 2016

As detailed with the other reviews, Great West Life will find any reason whatsoever to deny coverage, regardless of what your doctor says. I am requiring medication to deal with my arthritis, and my doctor and I have tried several treatments. Luckily I have supplemental coverage through a different company (who approved the drug with no hassle!) because Great West Life wants me to try a drug that would react FATALLY with the drugs I am already on (and have been on for years). Literally they want to put me at risk of DEATH before they cover this other new drug.

Great West Life - we'd rather kill you than pay you.
