Delay Delay

by ASEur on Jan 3, 2018

They lie regularly and wait until the last minute. You call back and you're told something different each time. It doesn't matter if it's a rep supervisor or manager. Their goal is to wear you down. They claim they make calls for records but don't leave a message or claim line is busy. They give teenager level excuses

Ridiculous!

Money is erroneously being taken from my chequing account by Sun Life so I called them to fix the problem. I got passed from person to person, department to department. They are sure that a mistake is occurring, but can't figure out how to stop stealing my money. I've spoken to at least 15 different, useless people and have to explain my story every. single. time. "Write us a letter and we'll get back to you." No, they didn't get back to me. "Send a fax to Attention Ryan and I'll look into it". He hasn't gotten back to me and the next person I spoke to had the nerve to laugh and point out that they have dozens of Ryans. "I'll get back to you tomorrow afternoon or the day after." Nope, Beverley never, ever calls. Just stop stealing my money!!! Seriously, losers, how hard can it be. I finally went to the bank today and put a stop payment on it. This has been happening since March 2011. Yep. They owe me $6000 and I'm seeing a lawyer tomorrow. I'm tired of being polite. I guess 78 months is my limit, LOL. They never, ever, ever call back and rarely answer the phone.

Worst ever!

My employer uses Sun Life, so I'm stuck with them. I've even considered other jobs just so I do not have to deal with them. If I could give zero stars I would. Their interface is convoluted and their customer service is atrocious! No one wants to take any accountability and pass you around until you've literally spoken with a dozen unhelpful individuals only to have you give up in sheer horror and disgust. My partner has blue cross and I thought being treated like subhuman was the norm until I spoke with them once. Wow! What a difference!

Don't bother calling them if you have a group benefits question. They are not helpful and they are always screwing up.

I called to add about my insurance coverage. The female rep.'s tone was as if she just got out of an argument or so. Cranky, did not listen, was not helpful.

Worst Service

by Fed Up! on Mar 13, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I've been with this insurance company for years. They refuse to help their customers in any way or at least try to keep their customers happy. I tried adding my spouse on my plan a few months ago and heard nothing back from them. When I decided to take matters in my own hands once again and call them, they've informed me that it was denied, yet they cant tell me why! So like always they transfer you over to someone else who is never sitting at their desk.

If you have options please do yourself a favor and don't sign up with these people. They don't care about you or your well being. They just prefer to take your money.

Delays in Cancellation

by mathguydave on Feb 21, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I attempted to cancel my insurance policy through Sun Life in July of 2016. I sent in all of the appropriate forms immediately, and was told that would be enough to cancel my payments. Shame on me for not looking at my bank statements close enough, but I noticed in October that payments were still being made for the account that I cancelled. I attempted to contact Sun Life to resolve this, but they have not responded to my emails. Eventually I had to pay a service fee through my bank to cancel payments to Sun Life, since Sun Life appears to be unwilling to cancel my payments on their end. Do not sign up for anything with Sun Life, ever for any reason. They are a crooked company.

The Worst Insurance Company

by George on Feb 14, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Sun Life became the worst Insurance Company ever. Each Claim is a subject for investigation. Investigators are rude. Demanding to provide personal information protected by Personal Health Information Protection Act 2004. They harass and intimidate Service Providers (Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, etc) , demand Clinical Notes , record conversation without written Consent, provide third parties ( contractors) with the confidential and sensitive information.
Attention employers : if You would like to provide your employees with real extended health benefits they need and pay for - stay away from Sun Life Financials.

abhorrent customer service

I provide a brief summary, as the various hoops I have had to jump through are many and mundane.

The company I work for transferred from a very solid and professional drug insurance firm to the godawful Sun Life Financial. Even though their presentations promised a smooth transfer, come first trip to the pharmacy after cut over day, find out that medication needs to be pre-approved prior to being filled. My medication is time dependent, so I had no choice but to pay out of pocket for the drugs. Then I had to chase my doctor for them to fill out forms again justifying the use of the drug and send to SLF. Doctor completed, the forms and faxed through. (What a waste of time for the doctor?!) I called SLF to confirm that everything was good and that I could submit my out of pocket claim and also on my next trip to the pharmacy would be without incident. I was promised everything was fine, a letter was received confirming my drug coverage. I arrived at the pharmacy - same thing. Refused by insurer. A call to the SLF resulted in being transferred 3 times over 45 minutes, about half as many times as I was offered to use their website to check my status - an obvious and painful delaying tactic, do they think people will give up and actually try their website? Its BS - does nothing, not customer interaction can be achieved from the site. I was eventually told the drug ID number they had on record was wrong and I would need my doctor to resend the drug approval - also I was told this was my fault? Turns out the drug has a different number in their system and the doctor and I should have known this and provided it. I am now two months out of pocket with my first paper claim rejected and back to square one. A very unsatisfactory company. Medical insurance companies are vampires to the system anyways, but Sun Life Financial are turning it into an art form.

Terrible Company

I have never dealt with a company so incompetent and so unwilling to help its customers. I was told that my claim would be paid in 48 hours. After three days, I called to see what the problem was. They said that in fact it would take 5 business days, not 2. When I asked why they sent me an email saying 48 hours, the person on the phone didn't have an answer.

After 6 business days and no deposit into my account, I called again. I verified my banking information, which was correct. They said the best they could do was requisition a direct deposit trace that would take 1-7 days. (One week for a direct deposit trace? That can be done with one phone call to the receiving bank.) After a week and no word from them, I called back. The person on the phone this time told me that a DD trace takes 2-4 weeks. (2-4 WEEKS??? ARE YOU JOKING???) I asked to speak to a manager. The 'manager' didn't have any additional information and wasn't able to help me in the least. I asked if there were any way they could stop payment and issue me a cheque, or if they could please contact their accounting department and have someone call the bank about the DD. No, she said, they can't do any of that...

But you know what the 'manager' WAS able to do? She was able to tell me that in fact a DD trace takes 4-6 weeks. In the same phone call, my wait time went up 2 more weeks. I asked her why the other employees each told me different things (3 people, 3 different stories), and she didn't have an answer.

I still haven't been paid, and still haven't gotten an apology. If you have the luxury of waiting for 6 weeks to get paid, or you're rich and don't care, then by all means you should go with Sun Life. However, if you need medical coverage but you do care about being paid in a timely manner and being treated with courtesy and respect, then Sun Life is definitely not the company for you.
