Worst company ever

by DMWM on Jul 30, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

The only reason I gave them a 1 is because I can't give them ZERO. It is going on two months since my claim was made to this company. They have done nothing but give me the run around. You send the info they request for them to say yes it's received and being reviewed. You don't hear back from them and you are then told oh no. We never received the info. This is needed to review your claim. I have been dealing with this for almost 2 months after severe injuries sustained in a head on collision. I know have had to involve a lawyer to assist me in getting my claim resolved. This has not only drained me emotionally, but my family. It is hard enough recovering from injuries without having to deal with a company who is not interested in resolving your claim. This has been a nightmare. I never would recommend this company for any insurance purposes.

Problematic Company Culture

by Louis_Karl on Jul 14, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I have been dealing with this insurance company through my own company and I have to say that their company culture is highly problematic. I went on long-term disability and I had issues regarding both drugs and disability.

Now, while complaints and issues happen with all insurances, the problem with Sun Life Financial is the way they do things. Not only do they seem to attract incompetent people ( 3/3 never returned calls/ e-mails over the course of weeks), they won't let you change whoever is assigned to your case, effectively stonewalling you in case things go bad.

For example, I was refused to be insured for a drug because it had the wrong code (never mind the fact that it was a refill of a drug that had been insured the other time). When I escalated this situation to the supervisor, I was told they would find the right code with the pharmacy. 6 weeks, 5 calls later, that supervisor, Mrs. X, is absolutely unreachable. Worst, whenever I called to ask to get in touch with Mrs. X's colleague or boss through the customer service, I was told it would be done before being transferred to Mrs. X's voicemail.

In the end, Mrs.X seemed to not appreciate my behavior of searching for a resolution as she called back and said there was nothing to do.

I've written enough for a review, but I have a similar experience with the disability department, letting me know that it's a company wide problem, not just a single person problem.

Word of advice: Avoid like the plague.

Please consider this your warning that if your employer provides you disability benefits from this company. Make sure you get other benefits elsewhere! I became disabled at no fault of my own and this company denied my long-term disability benefits. I fought to get benefits, was approved, to only be denied months later. This company is the scum of the earth and for those people who are unfortunate enough to need these benefits just be warned that they will not pay out those benefits to you when you need them. I hope one day that this company gets what's coming to it. Karma will haunt you Sun Life. For all those who are affected by their mistreatment, know that you are not alone.

Shady practice!

LTD benefits were offered through my employer. I almost DIED and Sun Life DENIED the benefits that were part of my benefit package through my employer. They used ONE sentence in ONE medical record that indicated my condition was "improving" (ie, no longer DYING) and they denied me based on that.

My "customer service representative" was a poor excuse for a human being and should be ashamed of herself for treating other human beings like that!

Ended up having to get an attorney to get what I was owed, and they still SUCK! If there is a holiday, they don't prepare in advance and get the checks cut early! Oh no, they wait until AFTER the holidays and just send your check LATE!

They should be shut down!

Company Does Not Pay

by Very Unhappy on Jul 13, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

I had a long term disability policy and paid for 15 years. When I became ill long term, my employer had me file a claim. I DO NOT have one good word to say for this company!!! They totally manipulate the situation to their advantage, trying to find a loophole that prevents them from paying $$$ out to their clients. Steer clear of this company. They are a RIPOFF!!!

Screw up

In 2016, I applied and was approved for Disability Insurance through my Scotia Bank Mortgage account. In 2018, the doctor put me on Disability Leave. When I went to access my Disability Insurance for my mortgage, I was notified that they made an error and ticked off Chronic Insurance instead of Disability Insurance. They assured me that the correction would be made. Months later, instead of correcting the error, they paid me out what I had paid towards the Chronic Insurance and basically refused to help me! I contacted the Office of the President of Nova-Scotia Bank to complain. They investigated the matter but it took months. Finally, I told the Office of the President that I would go see a lawyer and within a week, SunLife acknowledged their mistake and paid me out a portion. Now my Mortgage is in foreclosure due to receiving their payment too little too late, and they didn't even pay the hardship or the financial burden that they caused. Two thumbs down to them!

stressful (Disability)

Okay. Let's get things straight here, I would give a 0/5 for Sun Life in the disability sector. 3/5 to the group benefits. I have been off work due to what I have found out is bad ADHD and a myriad of anxiety disorders that I have been dealing with my whole life, and things have started to go extremely bad aka, almost suicide... I have been doing my due diligence with going to my appointments etc. waiting. Going to more appointments. Until I have finally gotten to see my psychiatrist today. When I first applied and got accepted for my disability claim. It took 3 weeks to get anything done. It took two weeks for my case manager to get a hold of me and confirm. Then after that. It took a week for my claim amount and dates to process. Then somehow a whole week to mail me a check... second time I applied for an extension. It took another 3 weeks to get any money. It is extremely difficult to get a hold of any case manager. As for some reason they aren't actually ever in their office. Why? I do not know. This is a benefits company. You are supposed to be helping people who are disabled or in need of help. These people need quick service. Not a lot of people have a whole months worth of savings to back themselves on to these days. May I mention, we also pay into this. So it is basically our money, to begin with, okay? So I have been diagnosed with bad ADHD and three other anxiety disorders along with a stress disorder. So my fiance and I were not able to pay rent due to 3-week delays, which happened twice now. I have been evaluated and strictly told to take 3 months off work for new medication and a strict plan ordered by the psychiatrist. I have left 4 messages in the last 3 days trying to get a hold of a case manager, to avoid the previous almost month-long delays. It is absolutely ridiculous, unprofessional and stressful. Sun Life financial should be stripped of their licenses and removed from the insurance business. People need money when they are not working. Unbelievably horrible service from this company and I am appalled my company uses them for their insurance and benefits. I could go on all day about the bad experiences I've had with Sun Life. But this will have to do. If someone high up in Sun Life reads this on some off chance. There needs to be some changes

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM!

by scamed_by_sunlife on Sep 14, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Stay as far, far away from this scam insurance company as you can..
DO NOT BELIEVE any of the other positive posts anywhere about this company, they are all fake and probably padded by the workers themselves.

They take your money and provide you with NOTHING! not even a call back and totally ignore you if you file a claim, contracts mean nothing to these crooks, to this date I have 4 so called "senior caseworkers" on my case over 3 months and NONE of them answer their phones nor return calls, EVER!

They constantly want more information from your doctor, then challenge your doctor's prescriptions, challenge your surgeon's surgery results, challenge your physiotherapist results, even challenge your cardiologist findings, everything and anything just to delay then deny your claim, these people are scum and treat you without respect like dirt, they are pre programed to NOT pay out your claim.

DON'T BUY THEIR WORTHLESS POLICIES!..
You WILL be so sorry later if you do.

LTD

by Bewildered on Nov 1, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I would not even give them 1 star, but I had to submit this. I applied to LTD and it was a nightmare from the start. I have paid into this for 12 years and I was warned when applying that they review to deny. My claim was for acute anxiety, stress and physical/health issues and in the end, I was told it was "due to reasons of a personal nature rather than an illness or injury" even though I had a 3-page letter from a psychologist stating otherwise and a 5-page signed note from my doctor. I had to do a personal interview on the phone, which was a joke. I should have declined the interview. It made me feel like a victim and only caused me more undue stress. They are not there for our health. How is a claim denied with signed documents from doctors? I looked into suing them and had a lawyer set up, who wanted to pursue it but I have opted to step away for now. You can google search this to find lawyers who specifically deal with denied claims. I cannot put who I found, but they are there if you require additional help to pursue your claim.
