Getting SCREWED by SUN LIFE

by termanilly angry on May 8, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

Getting screwed by Sun Life! I have diagnosed with stage 2-3 Cirrhosis of the liver, I decided to use my coverage through my bank which is 100% coverage for illness and death. Now I am being told (after I renewed my mortgage a month ago) that I now have 63% coverage for death and 80% for my monthly mortgage. How the hell is that legal?! When I went in and got the insurance I was never told - "So, would you like full 63% coverage?" No, it for 100%! Now they are trying to reduce my coverage, I might as well be on EI! Do they do this during the Quarantine? I am being forced back to work when it is extremely bad for me and a weakened immune system to be anywhere especially to have to go back to work. Has anyone had ANY success fighting these crooks???

Poor customer service

I have a very bad experience with this Sun Life. I am 7 months pregnant and had an accident. Due to this, I have severe pain on my lower back and upper back. Since I am pregnant, physio can't do much on my back. So my doctor said I should not go to work since. This pain can go really bad and has a risk to a baby's life too. Sun Life said: no, you can go to work and they won't pay me. It looks like they more than a doctor. Terrible company to deal with. Worst customer service.

Scam Insurance Company

by ClassAction on Nov 5, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

This company is sneaky and does all sorts of avoidance games to not pay costs for health care, DO NOT invest with this company! Stress leave: When my short term stress leave ran out from employer's contribution, Sun Life kept putting off approving my long term stress leave for months, knowing full well I had no paycheques. They basically 'starve' you out for months, until you are forced to go back to work, even though you are not medically ready yet. Circumcision for my child: Sun Life told me they would cover the costs of circumcision for my child, so I got the procedure done for $1300.00. Then they denied the claim after I submitted the receipt. They will play the game of - "who told you that and on what date?"

SUNLIFE

I agree with the person who submitted an existing review on SUNLIFE. Everyone, be warned! Do not purchase insurance from this company, especially Critical Illness and Long-term care insurance. They will take your money and then not pay out to you when you do become sick or disabled. They will give you the run-a-round from customer service, feed you lies for an extended period of time and then deny your claim.

Poor Service!

by SUN LIFE on Jul 3, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

They don't even read emails. Very poor disorganized company! They have no problem taking the money out every month but when you fall on hard times you get "we will look at it next week"! SUN Life is late with the mortgage payments when they were given all the information they asked for. Don't depend on Sun Life because they will let you down when you need them most!

Stand up for your rights!

From personal experience, and after reading all of the comments on here and other sites, I have to agree , that Sun Life is a very unprofessional company, to say the least. I have no idea how the employees of this company can live with themselves, when they are affecting people's lives so negatively. So many people who make disability claims have to fight to get it, to prove that they are unwell (even with a ton of medical documentation and support), which does not help them to get better, in any way. This company will drag out your claim, and jerk you around, until you get a lawyer involved. They are essentially bullies. They will take all the time in the world to respond to you (if they even do, at all), yet expect you to get your paperwork in, in a very short time frame. Don't waste your time, going back and forth with them, on your own. If you are declined, and have a legitimate case, get a lawyer, and stand up to them. No matter how dire one's financial situation is, a good lawyer will not take anything up front, so it is well worth getting one. From all the comments I have heard&read, it would be interesting to see if a class action lawsuit would be done...see people band together and show this company that they can't keep getting away with their shady practises. Not only do they decline people, and negatively impact their lives/finances and health, but they keep getting away with it, because they know they can. More people need to stand up for their rights.

Fraud

by noneyabiz on Feb 17, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I've paid for short term and long term disability for years. I had back surgery in September 2016. It's now nearly March 2017 and I've yet to get paid one penny. They lie and give you the run around. You'll never see a penny of what you thought was going to protect you. It's called fraud and when I get an attorney, maybe I'll get action. Anyone care to join me? We can do a class action!

For employers, not employees

I'm currently on short-term disability: this company is a nightmare. I had cancer and a subsequent mastectomy; recently had to undergo another very complex surgery that took four times longer than the previous. From the time I woke up in the hospital, Sun Life harassed me with requirements (I was literally all cut up in bed on the phone with them) trying to force me to go back to work early. I had to make phone calls (hard to hold a phone when you're all cut up) and drive to the hospital weeks before my doctor said I should trying to find/get doctors to make repeated phone calls to the Sun Life rep--had to make duplicate doctor appointments to met insurance req--I've been through a couple companies since I've been ill and Sun Life is the worst--my incisions reopened in my abdomen because of them--working on getting better--employers are the only entities that benefit. If you can: STAY AWAY.

LTD and Cancer with Sun Life

by Disgusted on May 26, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

Just had my LTD claim denied after going through cancer and having difficulties with my recovery. The claims person who never answers her phone issued a letter stating that "I appear to have some health concerns". Seriously. Do they think that I fabricated the pathology report from PMH which discusses my tumour? This statement is an insulting, graceless, compassionless remark to me and all the cancer patients out there who have dealt with the horror of this disease.
I have to seriously now consider the stress and toll that the appeal process will take on me and because I can't physically return to work they will be probably eliminate me.
I hope Sun Life is proud to treat cancer patients this way and further destroy people's lives. Way to go.

Mental illness is a joke

by Mader805 on Jan 28, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

I had no choice but to choose Sun life since my company is tied up with them. I applied for Short Term Disability (STD) in January 2016 due to a mental illness I have (depression and anxiety). Could not work so needed time off, so I applied and submitted to Sun Life. Within 3 days they declined my claim saying it is not a physical injury that prevents me from working and further says I'm claiming money for personal reasons!

Being said, Sun Life thinks mental illness is a joke unless I have a disease or in physical pain. A huge disappointment coming from a large corporation to make this comment. And to think in Canada we raised 25 million dollars to research on the stigma on mental illness and Sun life thinks it's nothing. And to think I'm claiming money for personal reasons??

I spend more than $100 to complete this from only to be denied in 3 days. Worst insurance company ever, and now I have to force myself to return back to work with this illness.
