I’m still on the phone, over 40 minutes waiting for a representative. So far...

Service is ridiculous! They do not deserve to be in business. A lady just answered, I wasn’t fast enough to get the number she requested so she just hung up.
Despicable attitude and service.

Time to get back to work

by Glenys Hysong on Jul 25, 2021
1.5 out of 5 stars

I have been with Sun Life for more than 28 years and have had no issues until this past 6 months. I submitted a dental estimate more than 6 months ago and 8 phone calls ago. To date, it’s still not completed. The dentist has also contacted me twice and gave up. Information is sent in and never processed. I feel is due to people not doing their jobs. People working from home and not doing their jobs. Time to get back to work. Frustrated.

Pick any other company

by L on Oct 13, 2020

This is the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with in my entire life. The reviews could not be any more true, they make your life difficult and frustrate you to the point of tears so they don’t have to pay out for legit medical emergencies. When I follow up somehow the chat always “breaks” when I start to ask questions about my recent claims. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

Honest Review

by AM on Sep 23, 2020

I've been with Sun Life for over 8 years ONLY because it is the only option my organization offers. If you have literally any other choice take it. They make it very difficult and confusing to make claims. I'm guessing they just hope people give up so they don't need to payout. The website requires 2 different access ID/certificates to get into and for some reason, my password is constantly reset (without my approval) or the account is locked and you need to call the phone line. The phone line connects you to the UK which can't access your info if you live elsewhere. They then transfer you to an automated line that has a ton of very vague options for you to choose from. You are then on hold for a long time (every time I've called) before you get to talk to a person. You are asked to confirm your identity and I think I have given every single bit of information I have... Only to be denied access because the email that the claims are sent to us different than the one I registered with. More to follow on this... I am covered by my company under a different medical plan. The "benefits" are for my family. Other than being the name on the plan I have literally nothing to do with it. I am away in remote locations multiple times a year and unable to access my Sun Life. All my claims are for my spouse or dependants. The only person who is able to access and approve the claims is me. I have asked and they will not let her access, change, make claims, or do anything on the account. Again, I could be gone up to 8mo a year. Without getting to personal, my spouse has had major life-changing surgery. The claims we make are very straight forward with lots of information (from doctors) to back it up. Sun Life fights tooth and nail with us on every claim. There is always a loophole or a fine print on why they can't pay it. Most of the claims can be submitted online... But if they decide it is questionable (all of them) then you need to physically mail in receipts etc. It's 2020, which is completely unnecessary and again just a deterrent. To summarize: - They deter members from making claims - will fight over every claim - customer service is atrocious - benefits are expensive and provide less than competitors - beneficiaries have no access whatsoever I would never recommend Sun Life to anyone and would switch in a heartbeat if I was able. Look elsewhere.

They avoid covering everything

I have about 9 submissions that Sun Life is avoiding paying (3 for massage) which is stated in my work benefits I have access to. When I submit they say doctor's notes are needed. My doctor's notes cost $15.00 because my doctor is tired of writing doctor's notes for everything. He even said that he is going to start letting nurses write them at his clinic for $15.00 for anyone who comes in for anything because it should be the patient's responsibility. He said it isn't even medically important to get a referral from a doctor it should be as simple as "is your back sore?" (Yes/No) if yes go to a massage.

SCAM!

by kristinavb on Aug 5, 2020

Their website is low maintenance. You need to call over and over and waste time talking to customer people about the account activation! Always issues with login. Member ID doesn't work; username doesn't work, the password doesn't work... It's always something that "doesn't work''. It's a trick as they don't want you to claim medical expenses. I am cancelling their service! Bye scammers! The worst insurance company ever!

Scam!! Stay away

by JJ on Jul 9, 2020

Stay away from Sun Life. I paid thousands of dollars of premiums over several years, only to find out that mysteriously my plan was 'cancelled' without my knowledge (while payments still being withdrawn) and that the representative who set my account up was fired for misconduct. However, no compensation was offered to me. The value is a joke too. I have an insurance plan now for more than double the benefit amount for literally 10% of the cost of Sun Life. Complete scam.

Always have issues

Since I got a new employer, I had to switch to Sun Life. I have had nothing but huge problems with them. After months of paying for a family plan, my fiancé had dental work done only to find out we had to pay all money out of pocket because Sun Life was saying that we were not covered. After many many calls with them, they finally saw that we were in fact covered and had been this whole time. Fast forward 5 months later and we still have not been refunded the money. They are now trying to claim that they paid us out. Incredibly rude cutting me off when I tried to explain what had happened. They do not listen, do not refund or properly cover you for multiple claims. I will be cancelling my coverage and will never deal with them again. I will go back to my previous insurance company which is wonderful, respectful and I never have issues with. Sun Life, maybe you should treat you clients with respect as we pay for the seats you sit in.

Hotel California Experience

by Retired Old Geezer on Feb 27, 2020

My wife & I are retired and had our health private health coverage with Sun Life. As of Feb 1, we switched to another company (very similar coverage and $96/month cheaper). I found a Sun Life cancellation form on a Sun Life site online, completed it and faxed it to the number given, I also put a stop on their automatic withdrawal at my bank effective Feb 1. They tried taking money out & were rejected. Meanwhile, my pharmacy screwed up & continued billing Sun Life in Feb until I found out about it & straightened it out with them. I emailed Sun Life's customer service department that looks after private health, explained what had happened and asked again that they cancel my policy. Today I got a letter saying they would take 2 payments out on March 1 to make up for the missed one. I called the number provided in the letter (as I don't want my credit to take a hit) to straighten it out. The young lady on the other end may as well be a robot. She asked if I got the welcome package when I signed up. I said I had. She said there is a toll-free number to call to cancel. I told her that I have a speech impediment (which should have been obvious to her anyways) and I sometimes find it hard to communicate over the phone. I told her how I found their cancellation form on their site and used that. She asked what phone number I faxed it to. I read it off to her and she says "that's not our number". I told her I can't be held responsible for bad information on their site! She kept going back to the phone number in the welcome package. We did this dance for 10 minutes until I asked to speak to a manager. She took my info and said they would get back in 24-48 hours. She said if they had covered any medicines during this time (which they did because of my pharmacy's screw up) then I would be libel for that month of coverage. I told her that was insane. I would happily pay back any amounts they had paid. My premiums are $323/month and they paid out a little over $100 for my medicines. I am not expecting anything from the manager other than what the robot told me. If I had the money to fight this I would on principal but since I don't and want to keep my credit score good I will probably pay the extortion demand.

Biggest scam! They got 25 years of my payments and denied my policy at the age of 56.
