If your low income Avoid!!!

by Lori on Oct 11, 2022
2 out of 5 stars

I have been with Economical for 2 years... when our income changed we had to go on monthly payments which were fine until our bank account got hacked. Economical slapped on a non-pay when their payments bounced, and they canceled our insurance. We fought for 2 months to get the non-pay removed. They left us without insurance trapped in our home.. having to cancel medical appointments. Both my husband and I are disabled and need our vehicle as to shop we have to drive 25 minutes to the nearest town. Economical refused to reinstate our policy we were told we would have to get a new policy. After 2 months Economical reversed the non-pay and reinstated our policy only to turn around and want the 2 months we were without insurance. I advised my Broker that if they tried to take their payment it was going to bounce again as we get our money at the end of the month hence why we ask to have withdrawals for our insurance on a specific date each month. Our Broker called them and explained our situation but Economical was not empathetic nor did they try and work with us. We explained they could have their money at the end of the month… they told our Broker they couldn’t stop the system they are still going to try and take it on Oct 12… which is going to hit us with another non-pay.
Why can’t insurance companies have some compassion for seniors with low income?

Cancelled for $13.80

So, the company does not send me my policy, invoice or proof of insurance. Then wait a few months and finally request the proof of insurance slips. Find out I have one last payment still to make but no idea as to how much (3 payment system) anyways I make a payment of $1200 which was apparently $13.80 too little and again with no communication they cancel my insurance. Can't believe that is actually legal but it's been done and their ombudsman was unable or unwilling to help. 20+ years and this is how they treat you there. They want loyalty but don't give any in return. Says a lot about a company. They are overpriced but thought I was paying for something... apparently not.

Only if you are High Risk

I found that they accommodated me when I was a high-risk driver, but after I was conviction-free for five years, not shortly after I had an accident. Seeing as the accident was between hours I had to call the "after hours" line. I called that morning for a claim and one was started with no issues. Problem was, I didn't have all the information at the time due to the accident being on a highway. I was told that she would send off my information and I would receive a call from an auditor to get the rest of the info. I waited two weeks, because it was xmas time, still no call. I called every week for 10 weeks following an hour on hold, each time. Wasted 10 hours of my life on hold with these folks. I was 15 mins away on this final call before I was actually going to head to the main office and demand someone help me. Finally got a hold them a couple of weeks ago, only to be told that the tow yards usually charge $60 / DAY for storage fees. So to aid my now +$2000 bill with the tow yards, the CSR sells them MY car to pay for it. I then had to pay the Tow bill, which was another $600 because I wasn't covered for weather. Now that I have a new car, and new coverage (for the time being), they are still charging me $250 a month for my OLD car on top of the payments I am making for my NEW car! Sneaky people, with next to none customer service skills. I hope you miss my money

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Sub-standard Service

I had 2 vehicles insured with economical for a few years before realizing I was paying too much! Possibly my broker should be blamed! Nonetheless I have cancelled my policies and moved to better rates and customer service.
