I just went to renew my insurance. Last year I was at - 19 years of experience. (-9) being the maximum discount. I had a little parking lot fender bender and not my insurance has gone up to $800.00. .713 discount. The customer service agent told me on the old model I would have gone to -13. Thanks for the good news that is NO good to me. I could have had TWO accidents and still got the maximum discount because of all my years of safe driving. Then she says "but there is a new model now and we can't compare apples to oranges". SO MAD! What a joke! Then she offered to share with me information on how the public loves this model way more. Especially seniors. (they should get a seniors discount anyway) I do not believe many people think this is better. Plus....we don't even have a choice!
The recent changes to ICBC were paraded out as rewarding the "good" drivers while getting "bad" drivers off the road. I have a spotless driving record (both incident and infraction free) of over 30 years end had the full discount. Now, I find out my insurance has gone up over 30% under the new system and my driver rating is what the broker called "average!!!" What would one have to do to get an excellent rating? The Broker could not explain why the cost had gone up and had no knowledge of how the cost was formulated. I would be far better off going third party which is where I will take my renewal.
Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.
I just went to renew my insurance, and under the new ICBC policy, I'll be paying 5200 a year compared to 3600. I have had 0 accidents, 0 claims and not even a parking ticket to my name. All because I still have my N and under the old policy they used the years you had your L towards your discount and recently cut that only counting the years you had your N. As well there is an increase for N drivers to boot. I'm in university full time, in what world can a full-time student afford that? We don't even have reliable public transportation where I live so I'm forced to pay this even though I can't afford it.
I am a driver with a perfect record who had the full discount under that system. Since the change this year I am considered a driver with 17 years experience and still have the perfect driving record. I was shocked when I went to renew this year as good drivers were supposed to save money. It went up another 80 bucks from last year. I nearly had a heart attack as I drive a 2003 Jeep wrangler Sport with a perfect record and years of experience and I'm paying 2006.00 dollars for the year. In comparison, if I was living in Alberta it would cost me around 600 bucks full coverage for the whole year. To pay that much on an old vehicle is criminal and shows just how corrupt ICBC really is. To give you all contrast I was curious about what it would cost me to Insure a brand new 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport with all the same coverages I have now. This is where it gets interesting and even made the agent sit up in her chair and wonder what is going on. So the quote on the 2019 Jeep was 2236.00 dollars, only 230 more than my 2003 Jeep. They cost basically the same even though one is a 2003 and the other is a 2019? How is this possible? If I had the money I would sue them for there massive corruption. We need private insurance today in B.C and ICBC needs to just go away. They have zero competition and are run by a bunch of crooks who are all padding bank accounts until the ship goes under. It would also be nice to give zero stars for the rating or even a negative rating as ICBC keeps showing that they are unable to run an insurance business effectively.
With these new ICBC rates, and their constant ads on every radio station (wonder what that costs) I felt I should relate the truth about private insurance. I moved over to Alberta for 5 years and came back, I was a roadstar in BC, Alberta didn't recognize that, put me mid-scale. Upon moving back to BC, after the circus of going thru out of province, my rates were 10$ more a month at a max discount then mid-scale in Alberta. To do the out of province they didn't even have a proper form, I had to fill out a transfer paper from myself to myself. They also had no way to contact or get any info from the insurers in Alberta to make sure I didn't have an accident, they made me go back and contact them.
If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.
ICBC is complete garbage, as I just renewed my car insurance I have been majorly affected by there new rates. My car insurance went up by almost 50% a month. I’m in actual shock as a “young” driver they wiped my 3 years of safe driving experience from my learners and now to them I only have 1 year! (I have never had a car accident in this time) This is garbage I have been a customer for 4 almost 5 years and they took all my discounts away. Sounds great ICBC let’s make the people younger group of people who already have a harder time pay more.
Every year I’m waiting for my discount and all of a sudden with no reason car insurance prices went up. I have paid insurance more than my car’s price and they are forcing the private car insurance companies to close. They are taking our money and give it as a high salary to their employers. Government act like they are deaf and acting for drivers complaints. The worst insurance company I have dealt with, we need a big number of people to start to react for these unfair prices.
I’m a new immigrant in B.C. before I get my car, I called ICBC about the CRS level discount. They clearly said I need my past copy of my insurance records for up to 8 years, and they will give 40% discounts. So the day I purchase my vehicle, I asked the same question with my insurance broker, after he reviewed, he said there’s no problem at all, most of his clients from overseas provide same documents. So I get 40% discounts. Now the story begins. Few months later, I was involved in an accident, which someone made left turn at least 30 sec after the red light and hit me. So police came, they said that’s definitely not my fault, and there are other drivers were willing to be my witness, so I called ICBC to make claims. I reported what happened included police file number and witnesses info, and they said they will investigate the incident. Next day ICBC’s adjuster called and said I’m 100% responsible for the incident. I was shocked and asked why. He replied he can’t just believe what the witnesses were saying, and police report is for reference only. That’s just insane, and he also said he thinks the other driver who hit me had over 40years driving experience, so he believes what he said. I tried to talk to their supervisor and even reported to the fairness committee, but they all said their adjuster is professional, so their decision is final, which nothing I can do. Few days later, ICBC wrote me a letter regarding that they can’t give me 40% discounts, so I have to start from 0, so I called them again. They said that their underwriting department reviewed, and said the documents I sent couldn't be approved. I asked why? The documents indicate the no. of years and how much I paid for my insurance, also with no claim history. And they replied that they can’t determine it’s real documents or not. And I told them they can call or go online and contact with my old insurance company! ICBC replied that it’s my responsibility to prove the documents are genuine, not their responsibility. And same thing, no matter how I fight, they just don’t care. They even told me if I’m not happy, don’t drive in B.C., go Yukon or New Brunswick, insurance only 700 bucks a year. In conclusion, ICBC is very irresponsible, rude, racist, not doing the job right, and money thirst corporation. I don’t understand why people in B.C. are able to let this company operate.
True story. I was properly parked in a shopping mall parking lot, engine off. My passenger was stepping out of her side of the car. Someone pulled into the space beside us and hit my passenger-side door. ICBC decision? I was declared 100% at fault because when the open door of a car is hit by a moving vehicle, the parked car is always assumed to be at fault. Do they think the guy was driving with due care and attention when he hit a parked car? Did they consider the guy may have been drinking? Nope. Did they call my witness, the passenger who almost got hit? Nope. Instant decision. Parked car is at fault. If he'd killed my passenger he probably could have filed a claim for the cost of cleaning her blood off his fender. So if you hit the door of a parked car in a parking lot, don't worry, it's their fault. Only good part: he hit my door edge-on, so only a scratch to my door, which I'll touch up, so no claim from me. But the other car had fender amage, and filed a claim.
I just had a question regarding the discounts for driving under 5k kilometers.
I am disabled. This man on the phone was impatient with me and sort of nasty/mean tone. He was just awful. I told him so and I also told him to calm himself down when he is talking to a disabled person. Just a horrendous experience. Totally unneccesary to be this rude to someone calling for explaination of discount on their insurance policy. I will not be dealing with them again.
