First of all their hours of operation are terrible if you live on the west side of Canada since their hours are EST and they are never open on weekends so you can barely get a hold of them. Also, they made a bunch of changes to my plan in 2018 that made my coverage garbage without telling me anything. They lessened my coverage amounts and percentages, and even changed basic dental checkups from 6 months to 9 months! I found this out when I took my son in for his 6 month check up and had to pay the whole amount! Manulife is garbage and I only use them because it's my works insurance but I'm going to cancel the whole plan and just buy my own for me and my family.
I would never recommend Manulife!
1. They throw many obstacles in the way of submitting claims.
Chiropractic and physiotherapy were included in my group benefits. The website said my group claims can be submitted directly once I verify my account. I followed all the steps and it still took more than 15 times and 7 months to be able to process direct claims. I needed to send a screenshot to a Manulife representative to prove I had verified my account and each clinic had to call Manulife multiple times to argue on my behalf.
When I went to the dentist and the front desk verified what was covered by my group benefits before I had dental work done. Manulife rejected the claim from the dentist’s office. I had to suddenly pay over $800 on the spot and then submit online at home and wait a month. The receptionist at the dentist’s office had never seen a claim rejected before, except by Manulife.
I can’t think of any reason why these normal claims have so many barriers! Maybe they’re hoping people won’t jump through all the hoops and it’ll save the company money?
2. When I switched to the individual plan I expected to pay more. That’s normal.
What I did not expect was for common prescription medications not being covered at all. Now I need to pay $300 more every month for meds that would be covered by every other insurance company.
There are many more issues I could talk about, including my Long Term Disability Claim, purposefully confusing and misdirecting letters from the company and more. But, I’ll stop here.
You get the point.
Never pick Manulife for your insurance!
They know to take their insurance fee from our pay very well but when you have a claim, they make you run asking you for more information every time you send in your documents. I have had a claim for my 2 kids for just $300. It has taken 2 months and I still did not get any payment from them in spite of us sending all documents required 3 times. All they say is please see your mail, we sent you information we need for our audit department, but those documents have been sent 3 times already and actually, they didn't send anything in the mail, they just kill time so that they can play with our money in the market. When they hold up 100 customers for an amount of say $1000, they can invest that amount in the market for $100,000. This is what they are doing and customer service? Don't ask. All they know is we don't know why the audit is asking for more info, all seems good, we will get back to you or check your mail. WORST INSURANCE COMPANY, GUYS, LOOK OUT.
I am someone who does not like to complain or do reviews, but I truly feel people should be aware of how terrible Manulife is so I can save others the issues and frustration I have dealt with.
In short; they flat out lie to you (saying my plan does not cover something when it does, and I send them the booklet with it highlighted), make you feel like you are the one at fault, even when essential paperwork is provided will consistently deny claim. Even when my work gets involved will deny claim and lie to my work. I have all paperwork to back up my claim and still deny deny. It's horrible what they are doing to my family, I have paid them for years with very few claims and when I do claim something it's a battle now lasting almost a year (a minor claim I might add) Totally unacceptable. If you are able, please do not go with this company, for the sake of your sanity and family please please pass on Manulife!
I hate to call them. Every time we fight over claims and how much is covered. Something like eye care for contact lenses is only every two years. Massage therapy is only for the $70per session. I pay through the roof in premiums and this is all I get. I am seriously considering telling my boss that I'm not going to participate in the plan. Maybe if they offer better to employees they'd stay longer. I'm looking for a better insurance company, and maybe a better company to work for. I'm done with this.
Manulife has gone paperless and will not provide paper invoices.
Just terrible practice for the money that you pay for service (laugh-NO SERVICE)
Crappy decision, not a happy camper.....
Their forms are not easy to interpret so if your doctor does not fill out their forms correctly, they will deny your claim without seeking clarification or additional information. I advised the Manulife representative my doctor wrote my medical symptoms on the wrong page but it clearly states I've been sick due to pregnancy and should be off a certain period of time. I have a scheduled vacation coming up which I was told but Manulife I cannot travel aboard and appeal the case at the same time, eventhough the doctor approved of my sick leave up until my vacation time, which at that point he expects me to be better. This is on the verge of discrimination and I will be contesting their treatment of my case as they are causing undue hardship by not taking reasonable steps to assess and process my claim.
We have been paying into Manulife for over a year. In total we have given them over $2400.00. The other day I had to go refill my prescription for my diabetes. I was told that my plan was capped at a $1000.00 and I had reached my limit. So I had to pay full price. And for those who don't know, insulin is NOT cheap. So the money that we have spent on Manulife was a waste of money. They don't reset the plan until September 1st. So in other words we would have to pay 220.00 a month for a plan that we can't use and 200.00 for my medication. What a rip off. Manulife is not worth any amount of money you put into it.
This company is by far the worst insurance company I've dealt with. In order to get reimbursed for drugs you have to fill out 2 page long forms and PHYSICALLY mail them (yes you have to pay for postage as well) just so they can review and maybe pay you. Manulife doesn't allow forms to be submitted online because they want to make as much hassle for their clients as possible so their clients don't even bother submitting anything.
Horrible customer service, makes you feel like your not entitled to anything. Have had good experience in past with them. But lately Horrible....
