WSIB stands for Workspace Safety and Insurance Board. It goes by different names in different provinces, such as WCB-Alberta in AB and WorkSafeBC in BC. This coverage is mandatory for some industries. However, it only covers workplace incidents. If you are injured and become disabled outside of your work, you are not protected by WSIB. For this reason, it is vitally important to ensure you have supplemental coverage. Also, never assume that your place of work carries WSIB. Some smaller companies, or those whose employees are largely office workers, forego it. Even if you are covered, it can be difficult to obtain your benefits in a timely manner. Again, supplemental insurance is important.
WSIB is a no-fault insurance. That means, accepting coverage removes your right to sue your employer.
