AVIVA, a horror story.

by Frank on Mar 5, 2019
1 out of 5 stars

For anyone that has auto insurance from Aviva Canada, I strongly suggest you find a new provider and for anyone who is contemplating using them for insurance to stay well clear of them. They are a horror story and only want your money and will find any excuse to avoid payouts. Here is my horror story. I have had them for over 10 years as my auto insurance provider and dutifully paid the premiums on time, every time, even when I heard others had cheaper premiums with other companies. Stupid me. On July 2018 I was involved in an auto collision. The other driver was at fault and was charged with careless driving by the police officer. It was my bad luck that he also had Aviva insurance. I reported the accident in same day. Aviva quickly wrote off the vehicle, even though the damage did not seem that extensive, and lowballed me on the payout. Less than half of what I paid 2 years prior. I argued that I had done some major repair work on it 6 months prior and should be at least partially compensated for that as well. According to Aviva that is apparently where I committed a sin. It seems we cannot question being ripped off by them. After 1 month of no definitive answers from them, in frustration, I cancelled my multiple auto and property policies with Aviva. They lost a total of $6,600 annual premiums because of their unprofessional approach. And really for a mere $12,000 claim. That appeared to have been my second mistake. I believe that they thought it was now payback for cancelling my policies. They took over 6 months to make a case that the work was not done as detailed in the receipts I provided. They put me through phone and an in-person interrogation (the Gestapo could not have done a better job). The end result was that they declined my claim including the car rental I used for 1 week after the accident. While it may be true that the auto shop cheated me on the work done in the bills, they should have simply declined the receipts and maintained their original offer, low as it was. Talk about adding salt to a wound. I have now retained a lawyer and proceeding with legal action against Aviva. Stay away from this scam of a company.

Aftermarket replacement parts

After being with the insurance for some 25 years, I had a fender bender and needed my rear bumper replaced. Because my car was "already 3 years old", they didn't approve the original Mazda part but only the aftermarket. I am already with a different company.

worst auto insurance company

by Ethan & Kristine on Nov 7, 2018

We never knew how bad this company is until we needed auto repair from the collision. It made us feel really stupid to pay them for years. The adjuster never Never Ever NEVER EVER Never Ever picked up their phone. After the incident, they dragged it more than 2 months to process the case. If we didn't bring the car to the auto shop and push them to fix it after waiting so long, we would be still waiting and driving neither rainproof or windproof or snow proof car on the road with a toddler in it. They are the worst auto insurance company that we have ever experienced. All we have is anger and frustration with speechlessness. After auto shop put us on a rental car due to the unsafe driving condition of the car, the car rental just noticed it was our last day of car rental under insurance. But, our car is still waiting for the parts to arrive. What we have been told is the rental won't start counting until they start fixing it, and now we still need to rent a car for a month from our own pocket. It's just ridiculous. If we knew about this, we would be rather driving the unsafe car until the car parts arrive and get a rental. They are such a rip-off. Speechless. Not even worth 1 star.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Unbelievable! Horrible!

No wonder they have a poor rating. Since the beginning of the claim process, they didn’t give us reassurance or support. The adjuster that we dealt with was unreliable, we had to chase her and call her regarding the claim. When we spoke to her, she told us that we’re approved, we are at no fault, therefore, the insurance would cover it. We have nothing to worry about. That’s what she said. She did not even discuss the deductible in this case. It took about a month and a half before we got the car to the shop because they’re waiting for the approval of the insurance. So we had to chase her down again. The communication with her was horrible. Then, after my car was all fixed, the shop was asking us for $1000 deductible as per my policy. Now, I understand my policy but we were confirmed by the Aviva adjuster that we are not at fault. The shop and two new adjusters kept calling us to pay as if we are going to run away, even left what sounds like a harassing voicemail. I PAY MY MONTHLY FEES ON TIME!!! When I called the adjuster many times, left a voicemail, she did not even call us back! Not one single phone call from her. We called the customer service of Aviva and no one can explain as to why the deductible applies. We are just asking for clarification because I don’t think no one in their right mind would pay $1000 right away without knowing why. It turns out that since the beginning we were already rated as at fault. We called the ombudsman and of course, they didn’t do a damn thing!! We have no problem paying the deductible if at least they have told us earlier or at the beginning of the process. We could have at least presented that we are not at fault. The communication was not very clear, they kept passing us from one person to another. The adjuster that we initially dealt with was nowhere to be found. We’re paying the insurance so that when accidents happen, there would be a little bit of relief knowing that they will back you up or support you. No, they just take your money and expect you drown. Vultures! So if you’re looking for a reliable insurance, find somewhere else. You wouldn’t find it at Aviva. All they do is take your monthly payment and left you dry and figure it out yourself. Very rude people, they don’t even pretend to listen.

Worst company to deal

Got into an accident without any fault. As I was standing on the red light a guy hit me from behind and I hit the car that was standing in front of me. The person who hit me left the scene and he was charged as hit and run. It's been over 2 months I am doing back and forth. They have no answer for my car. My claims adjuster is the worst person to deal with. She never answers her calls, I left more than 50 voicemail to her. I have called her and Aviva more than 86 times in just 60 days. All they want to repair is the body part and they are not even paying the full amount of body repair. The day I got into the accident my car stopped running and they don't care because they think the car stopped running not because of the accident. I just bought the new car 2 months before I got into the accident. Spoke with more than a dozen lawyers and no one wants to take the case just because they know Aviva is a difficult company to deal with. Pay $10-20 more and get a better company than going with such a company.

WARNING do not go here

My vehicle was in an accident which was not my fault, I have all perils and total loss, so I can receive total cost of my vehicle's value in case it is a write-off. That was not the case with Aviva, they are criminals, who enjoy taking your money, but won't help you. I have a 1,000 liability, so they have to give me a rental until my claim has been settled. They gave me the rental for one week only, then cancelled it. My claim had not been resolved yet. The claim adjuster stated that I would have to pay for the rental until we could settle the claim. I explained I had to have a vehicle for work (which she ignored). I sent them pictures of what my vehicle looked like before the accident as well as receipts of various costly repairs I had performed to keep my vehicle in top condition mechanically as well as a rust-free exterior with yearly Krown coats. This all did not matter to the claims adjuster, she basically told me I had to accept the offer as they would not give me anything more. My vehicle was going for between 8,000 to 11,000 at the dealer, they wanted me to accept 6,000 and no more. They made my experience very upsetting, I would never recommended Aviva. They do NOT back you up in any claims no matter what you're paying them. My broker was trying to back me up.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

DO NOT BUY AVIVA INSURANCE!

Worst company to deal with when you submit a claim. 2 months since a car accident where the other driver was at fault and charged and I still have not received a penny for my vehicle, which Aviva wrote off. On July 27, 2018, I was involved in a car accident where the other driver came out of a side street and sideswiped my vehicle. Police was called, and the other driver was charged since he was clearly at fault. Police filed a report, and, in turn, I submitted a claim with Aviva Insurance same day. Found out other driver has the same insurance company. Aviva wrote off my vehicle though damage did not seem extensive to me. They low-balled the value of my vehicle ($8,000 CDN). I made an argument that it should be more ($11,000 CDN) and submitted repair/upgrade bills to make my case. They responded that they will investigate but also pressured me into giving up my rental car within 5 days after the accident though the rental cost was way below what I was entitled to. I was subjected to 2 lengthy interviews by Aviva that were more like interrogations questioning the accident and costs. Asked for a detailed written report from me and asked for a witness signature, Commissioner for Oaths, which resulted in lawyer fees. Before I obtained the signature, I sent a filled-out form (that had no instructions) to Aviva requesting a review to ensure it was completed correctly so it would not be rejected. The review came back good. I got the signature and submitted the form. It was rejected within 3 days by Aviva. Reason: "said loss was caused by" should have said "Collision" while I wrote in "Improper left turn by another driver". I refilled it out and got a new signature which resulted in more lawyer fees. 2 weeks since I submitted and still no response. I phoned the Aviva representative several times. No response and left voicemails. It is now Sep 19 and almost 2 months since the accident and no compensation from Aviva. Next stage is to get a lawyer and start litigation. I have had insurance from Aviva for just over 10 years and paid them over $60,000 CDN in fees and this is how they treat you when you make a claim, and not a large one at that. I have since cancelled my cars insurance, house insurance and cottage insurance with Aviva. DO NOT BUY INSURANCE FROM AVIVA.

Approval of claim excessive

by Oliver Ness on Sep 8, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

My first accident in 50+ years and how disappointed and frustrated I was. After booking in the claim months ahead for a small damage incident, it took two weeks for the appraiser to arrive and another two weeks for the adjuster to give the go-ahead for a very minor repair to my 5th wheel even though the insurance company was notified months ahead when the vehicle was being booked in. I got the runaround and as the old saying goes 'I can deal with honesty but have a very hard time with lies'. Everyone just kept passing the buck and made excuses why there was no action. It took a month to do a two-day repair job. I will not use Aviva again.

Do NOT recommend

I have a claim on my car to fix the front bumper and spoiler. They told me it would be a 4-day fix. It's now been almost 3 weeks and I just heard back from my claims adjuster telling me that he is going to "repair" the spoiler and not replace it. This is the second time it has been repaired and I wasn't happy with it the first time, even so I switched auto body shops. But they still insist it is repairable which is complete nonsense. No communication and horrible service. I will be switching insurance as soon as possible

Worst insurance company ever!!

by Aami on Jul 31, 2018

They lack customer service skills and are always trying to put up a fight with the customer. I had a claim experience and it was the worst experience ever. They try to make you look like the bad guy and pay extra fees when I was not at fault. My car took over a month to get fixed when they told me it should take 10 days. Ridiculous!! That's probably why this company has only 1 star. If there was a zero star option, I would gladly give it to them. Aviva insurance should be working with the clients since we are giving money to them, instead, they just want you to be with them but not even help you out. I am never going back to this company and advise you all to go to Belair, Allstate etc.
