All good until Aviva came in

by Tamany S on Oct 24, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I pretty much echo what everyone else says. I've been "customer" for 14 years and never had an issue until Aviva came into the picture. I've experienced everything from long wait times to poor customer service to a claim that turned into a 6-week wait just for a windshield replacement! We have 3 cars and our house with them. Needless to say I'll be hunting for a new provider but unfortunately living in Brampton it won't be easy.

Worst insurance experience

I have been a Home Insurance client with this company for a few years. This year I decided to add Auto as well. The process started over a month ago whereby they mailed me an application. I filled it out and emailed it back to them promptly. No one called me to give me any feedback. I called and I had the same experience as the others - callback in 1.5 hours and then the agents have no clue what is in front of them. They told me that someone tried calling me, however, I could not reach as my number was not valid. I told them I am calling from that number. Then they told me that my phone probably does not accept blocked number calls and I said to them why are you calling from a blocked number. Your display should clearly state RBC Insurance and you could have emailed me. Then they proceeded to tell me what corrections I needed to make to the form, which I did and scanned it back to them. The same cycle/ no callback. I called/ 2-hour callback/agent now says that there are additional changes to be made. I asked them why do they not accumulate all the changes and advise rather than doing a piecemeal job of going back and forth. Long story short - it has been over a month of me going back and forth, I have called to follow up again and again and I still don't have an answer from them. If they have so many problems dealing with a simple application from a 5 star rating driver/customer, who already has a good history with them on the home insurance side, I don't know how they will deal with anyone who has had bumps along the way, is not computer literate, does not have a scanner, cannot wait by the phone for 2 hours at a time only to be told that your valid number does not work or accept blocked calls.

RBC Canceled my Auto insurance

by thumperqew on Oct 17, 2018

Had a 5,000 claim in 2015, in 2017 Aviva partnered with RBC as the underwriter and then they cancelled my insurance 1 month before my renewal!!! RBC said AVIVA sent me a re-application via snail mail (which I never received). Because I didn't "reapply within 2 weeks, they sent a "registered" letter informing me my policy is cancelled and they no longer want me as a customer. AFTER 15 years of being a customer, never missing a payment! No changes in my vehicles or driver rating. (They actually said they would NOT cancel my House insurance! LOL). BEWARE, Aviva now RUNS RBC insurance and the complaints line I called said they are targeting longtime customers and snuffing them out as most have a declining deductible clause (my $500 deductible was at $0 because of my 15 years of "Loyalty"), haha. They ACTUALLY said I qualify for the exact same coverage after the RBC agent issued me a quote and I would have NO lapse in coverage, HOWEVER, there would be $150 rate hike and I would lose all accrued loyalty benefits such as my declining deductible, which was at $0, so re-set to $500. RBC's bait and switch predatory practices are despicable, I don't believe they ever mailed me any re-application/renewal forms and obviously by not emailing me or calling me to notify me about pending policy cancelation (they had my email and home phone number on file for years) they obviously targeted me and are looking to get rid of long-term customers. The RBC insurance Rep apologized for AVIVA's unscrupulous corporate tactics as this is new to RBC, she sounded embarrassed after admitting she is getting multiple calls from longtime customers with similar complaints. Note RBC does not target new customers, within the last 2 years, rather longtime loyal customers they want to get rid of. Good luck RBC, I'm lodging a complaint with the Ontario Insurance Ombudsman and notifying my Union, my workplace as well as my friends and family to steer clear of RBC! AVOID the renewal cancellation hassle by RBC auto insurance.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Extreme Wait Times Home/Auto

Two days in a row I get disconnected from RBC Insurance toll-free line. Each day I waited over 2 hours. Still can't drive my new (used) autohome because I can't even get it insured because I'm still trying to add it, I'm on hold so I have time to write/vent the second Issue: Home Insurance with RBC, I had hail damage on my roof July 6, 2018. My shingles are damaged & today August 21, 2018, I'm still waiting for the adjuster/contractor to write his report to send to RBC. The adjuster they used from Home Depot was rude & could not call me as he was asked to do so I could attend his assessment. I'm still not sure if he did really make it to view my claim 2 months LATER!!! Disappointed all around, I may have water damage as my shingles now need full replacement & I don't know how to move forward because we have been waiting almost 2 months for an answer. Worse service I've had, ever. Auto & Home insurance with RBC is not worth the possible minor saving because they have the worst service. Go elsewhere, trust me

Worst insurance provider.

I got quote for my car, my husband's car and house insurance from RBC. They were very nice when I called to set up the insurance. They gave me a quote which I was okay with. And after a week they sent me a letter telling they increased our insurance policy premium by $60 more than quoted just because I forgot to mention about a speeding ticket my husband got about 2 years back and they already charged that amount from my account without my permission or acceptance if I want to continue my insurance with them after increased premium. I called them right after getting the mail and explained everything to an insurance advisor. I told him I literally forgot about the ticket but I thought you guys will pull up the drivers abstract and will inform me if there are any changes. The guy told me he understands and I can cancel the insurance if I want but I should get insurance with a different company before cancelling so I don't have any lapse. I got my insurance with TD and called RBC back to cancel it. After cancelling all the insurance the guy tells me they will charge me almost 1 and a half month worth of insurance premium as a penalty fee for each insurance for cancelling it and I have no way other than paying for it. So I called TD back and explained again and they were generous enough to cancel my insurance with them without any penalty. Now I am stuck with RBC to pay $60 extra each month for 12 months coz I don't want to pay that big of a penalty fee. The advisor was not willing to help me in any way neither he would transfer me to anybody to help me out. Worst insurance company ever seen. First time dealing with RBC. Never again in life. Stay away from them.

Don't get RBC Insurance

by VK on Jan 16, 2018

I have got RBC auto and home insurance last year because I had RBC business, chequing and all my credit cards with RBC.I just want to point out there are no savings if you think u will save money by going with RBC. While I was on the phone in the whole conversation I wasn't told that the insurance is through AVIVA. RBC does not offer any insurance of their own. They offer AVIVA' s insurance. They can only be reached by phone, in case you have missed a payment they send u a letter traditionally instead of calling you or emailing you. Lately, I learned that you can not pause RBC Auto insurance if you are travelling to another country. You can only pause your insurance if you are travelling for more than 60 days. What's the probability of you travelling more than 60 days... VERY SLIM... It was really easy to pause the insurance with TD when I was with TD. They also charge you hefty NSF fee in case you missed a payment and no matter how hard you try, they will not reverse the NSF charge. I had much better experience with Intact or TD than RBC. Don't buy RBC insurance.

Nothing negative to say

We've been insured with RBC for 5 years now. We have never had a claim, but I did have a minor, my fault collision. They had a really helpful line that talked me through the benefits and consequences of filing a claim. It was cheaper in this case to give the other individual $500 cash and not have my premiums increase. They have been very helpful when changing vehicles/drivers and when I've called to clarify my coverage (which has always included what I was worried about). Today, I got my renewal package in the mail and our monthly premiums for home/auto will be going down by $80 a month! That's a 36% discount without having to shop around (I had, and our new rate is in line with the lowest quotes I've seen with less coverage.). Needless to say, I'm pretty happy. Oh also they reduced our deductibles. Just because. I can't really complain.
