RBC/Aviva Renewal Experience

by Kronya on Feb 3, 2019
1.5 out of 5 stars

I was with Aviva for one year - had no claims and a clean driving record, but no longer am because of the following. Their renewal process is needlessly complicated - they mailed me a renewal application in December, which I then had to mail back. Why the renewal isn't automatic like other insurance companies I don't know but I hadn't had any reason not to renew, so I dutifully sent back my completed application in January. I then got a phone call saying that my application was incomplete because I hadn't filled in N/A in 3 places! I thought it was ridiculous that I had to mail off an application in the first place, and that they couldn't just accept my verbal confirmation for N/A to be filled in. Keeping in mind that they take some time to process your application, and I got this phone call shortly before my insurance was about to expire, this seemed shady. In any case, I filled it out quickly and sent it again before expiration. I then had to call them 2 times to see what the progress was, waiting on hold for minimum 20 minutes each time, and they kept saying someone would call me the next day with a quote once it had been processed. No one ever did. I find it very unbelievable that I can get a quote by calling in if I am a new customer, but that they cannot give me a quote for renewal until the entire application had been processed. The third time I called I spoke to a lady who finally said that my renewal had been approved and that it had been mailed out. At this point, my insurance had expired, and this is when I found out what my quote was: $300 more than the previous year! She assured me I still had time to cancel before my card was charged, and did not mention anything about a cancellation fee. So I waited until I received the mailed out package and then called around and found a much more reasonable quote with TD ($450 less). I then called RBC back to cancel my renewal - at this point, the guy said that as my policy was already in effect, I would be charged a cancellation fee, plus the insurance for 2 weeks, which worked out to a whopping $291. This made me really upset because that is a lot of money for me. It was still cheaper to go with TD, so I still cancelled but I am really unhappy with Aviva's shady tactics. If it was this hard for a simple renewal, I am glad I never had any claims with them. Also, they have changed their policy so that you have to pay the entire premium upfront, which is a huge expense. Buyer beware and I hope my review has at least helped someone.

I see a pattern...

by Dawn Ellis on Jan 7, 2019

It seems that RBC/Aviva has decided they have too many customers and are undergoing a major purge. I received the form, had to call RBC to get the information to complete the form (so they wanted information they already had). Plus wait times to speak to someone are never less than 30 to 45 min. Sent by UPS due to mail strike - had to call to see if all was in order - told it wasn't (why didn't they let me know right away?). Did exactly as I was asked, but received 3 confusing letters within 2 days claiming I had not filled forms outright (missed 4 tiny boxes that didn't even affect policy and were not clear and were not mentioned when I spoke to someone the first time I was told it wasn't filled in correctly). I spoke to someone (after 45 min hold) who told me - the policy was cancelled as I missed the deadline. He assured me with a quote and receipt of the corrected form that all would be good. I picked up a registered letter that day stating my policy will not be renewed due to insufficient information. Have been trying to resolve, but if you aren't here when they call you, they don't seem to want to call you when you are available. Phoned another insurance company - in less than 1/2 a day, we will have new car/house insurance with no form to fill in. Seriously disgusted with treatment from RBC. I wonder if because of the AVIVA buyout RBC can no longer support their customer base and is using the form as a way to FIRE customers. It seems to be a trend here!

Cancelled policy

by Derek on Dec 13, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I have never experienced ANYTHING like this. In the 20 years I have been driving, I have always had a good record and one accident where I was rear-ended by a kid. I was with AMA Insurance but the rates kept doubling and when I got a cancellation notice that my home was too old to insure, I moved to RBC. HUGE mistake. My insurance payments come out on the first, on a travel Visa I have. I transferred the payment and it was applied as funds available but the bank didn’t post the payment until the next banking day so the payment didn't go through. Since it’s a credit card, I assumed it would go through in a day or two. It didn’t. So after a few days I noticed the payment still hadn’t gone through so I called RBC and I was on hold, and on hold, and on hold. I tried for a few days to get through, and it was the 5th of December, when the payment should have gone through on Dec. 1st. The day after, registered letter, my insurance had been cancelled for non-payment. I don’t know what kind of outfit Aviva insurance is, but this is going to have a serious impact on my record for years. The policy is just cancelled. I can pay the policy for the year outright, but nope. Just cancelled for non-payment. I am beyond disgusted. If they are this with payments, I need to see what they are like if you actually had a claim. I’ll be filing a BBB report against them and leaving a review to warn others wherever I can.

RBC Pathetic Service

by Calgaryfrustrated123 on Dec 3, 2018
1.5 out of 5 stars

It's been said by many reviewers before this review, but to call RBC, even for a minor and quick change to your policy, and you're on hold for two hours. Their recording says, "We are experiencing a higher than normal call volume", well, guess what? It is not higher than normal, because that is normal. That recording has been in place for two years, and they have done zero to change that. Once you finally get through, to add a seasonal vehicle to the policy (i.e. an RV for the summer), which has been on the policy year after year, and they still take 30-40 minutes asking 1,001 questions about who resides in the home, vehicles used, distance travelled to work, etc. You cannot accomplish this task in 20 minutes, rather, expect three hours minimum with wait times, etc.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Unreal wait time

Long long long wait time on the phone just for a minor change and simple inquiries. I've been a long time customer but would consider switching insurer. This has happened after Aviva bought the RBC insurance business. Should actually deserve a zero rating.

RBC & Aviva, they don't care.

by Lynne2018 on Oct 26, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I have been a customer with RBC insurance for over 10 years. I will not be renewing my auto policy with RBC because of the lengthy wait times and the incompetence that I have experienced when dealing with their agents. I recently had to deal with RBC insurance over a small auto insurance claim and the whole process was extremely painful. For example, I was informed to wait for an adjuster to call me but the adjuster never did call the number I provided. Called again and left a new number and again no return phone call. The adjustor decided to leave a message at my home number in spite of me reminding RBC insurance agents several times that we were away during the summer. Very poor communication skills. Unfortunately, RBC insurance has gone downhill since Aviva came into the picture. I don't remember having lengthy wait times in previous years when contacting RBC, when changing vehicles, etc.. It now takes over an hour each time. This was a major problem when asked to fill out some forms Aviva required as the agents are never available for help within a reasonable time. The required paperwork also asked very obscure questions such as the weight and how many cylinders for each vehicle that even the RBC agent could not help me answer. When asked about the total of my last claim, again the RBC agent could not give me that information because he had yet to receive it from Aviva although the accident happened three months prior. Again, very poor communication. I also encountered a problem when trying to send Aviva some insurance renewal forms before the deadline. In spite of calling Aviva customer service directly to forward the paperwork, their agent gave me the wrong email address. As a result, Aviva cancelled my policy when the application was not received on time. By the way, my family and I have been responsible customers with RBC for over 10 years. My claim was around six thousand dollars with no prior tickets or convictions within our family. The RBC agent gave me some fabricated excuse that I was at fault because I should have gotten the correct email address from him and not the Aviva agent in spite of having the original email as proof that the paperwork was indeed sent on time to their "Aviva Care Centre" general mailbox. Unbelievable! Perhaps they should rename their general mailbox "Aviva No Care Centre" as they definitely do not care about their customers. The RBC agent politely replied that I could reapply for their auto insurance as a new customer, that I would have to resubmit all of the forms, and that the whole process would take approximately two to three weeks. I replied, "No thank you".

All good until Aviva came in

by Tamany S on Oct 24, 2018

I pretty much echo what everyone else says. I've been "customer" for 14 years and never had an issue until Aviva came into the picture. I've experienced everything from long wait times to poor customer service to a claim that turned into a 6-week wait just for a windshield replacement! We have 3 cars and our house with them. Needless to say I'll be hunting for a new provider but unfortunately living in Brampton it won't be easy.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Worst insurance experience

by Nowords on Oct 18, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

I have been a Home Insurance client with this company for a few years. This year I decided to add Auto as well. The process started over a month ago whereby they mailed me an application. I filled it out and emailed it back to them promptly. No one called me to give me any feedback. I called and I had the same experience as the others - callback in 1.5 hours and then the agents have no clue what is in front of them. They told me that someone tried calling me, however, I could not reach as my number was not valid. I told them I am calling from that number. Then they told me that my phone probably does not accept blocked number calls and I said to them why are you calling from a blocked number. Your display should clearly state RBC Insurance and you could have emailed me. Then they proceeded to tell me what corrections I needed to make to the form, which I did and scanned it back to them. The same cycle/ no callback. I called/ 2-hour callback/agent now says that there are additional changes to be made. I asked them why do they not accumulate all the changes and advise rather than doing a piecemeal job of going back and forth. Long story short - it has been over a month of me going back and forth, I have called to follow up again and again and I still don't have an answer from them. If they have so many problems dealing with a simple application from a 5 star rating driver/customer, who already has a good history with them on the home insurance side, I don't know how they will deal with anyone who has had bumps along the way, is not computer literate, does not have a scanner, cannot wait by the phone for 2 hours at a time only to be told that your valid number does not work or accept blocked calls.
