It's time to switch.

We have had our auto and home insurance with this company for 25 years. I just called to add our teenage son (new driver) to our plan. I was expecting our premium to go up but was surprised to learn that they will not insure new drivers under any circumstances. I will be cancelling our policies immediately, due to this elitist and discriminatory policy.
I've had my house and auto insurance with them for 25 years maybe more. In all that time I've had one auto claim some 11 years ago and no home claims. I was not at fault but my car was totalled. The claim was settled satisfactorily with speed and politeness. Nor did my rates go up beyond the usual creepage. A recent matter, not even involving a claim, has made me decide to leave this company. I had to purchase a car out of the province of my residence when my old one was beyond reasonable repair costs. First, they told me the maritime branch could still insure me but with a 60 % premium. I was willing to pay because it would only be for a few months. Then they came back and said they could not insure me and that I would have to be insured by their Ontario branch. That auto insurance was 85% more than I had been paying. Because they do not consider the Ontario and Maritme branches the same company and my home was insured with the Maritime branch my house insurance also went up 18%. I was not pleased but again considered it a temporary matter until I had my plates changed back in several months. I decided I would change insurance companies if they did not return me to close to the previous status quo to both house and auto. I asked them to send the policies to a temporary mailing address for me to review. But they got the address wrong. So I had to phone them to correct that and make sure future mailings went to my home address. Tried a couple of times but I could not wait more than 15 minutes to get a person. Then one day I got to a person within minutes... By not listening, just like the individual who did not get the address right, she turned what should have been a simple matter into something very complicated. She kept cutting me off and would not let me speak my mind. She had the gall to threaten to hang up if I did not calm down when she was the one escalating matters. I should have said, "You know what? It doesn't matter. I'll be changing insurance companies in the next few months," and then hung up. They'll be losing a good client. Never any problems with payment and only one claim in 25 years. She was the straw in a series of events. I do not want to be insured by a company that employs someone like her. She's a bully with psychological issues; the need to be right and a lack of genuine empathy. (I have a Ph.D. in psychology and worked in a psychiatric facility). They also lost my father a few years back. He never made any claims. But they were making mistakes with billing and he got tired of calling them up after they kept making the same mistakes over and over again.
Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.
After being with TD for 7 years and having multiple cars and home insurance policies with them, they increased my insurance premiums 28% from the first year with no changes (i.e. no accidents, tickets etc).
I had been a loyal auto insurance and home insurance customer for 10+ years. I had a recent incident where I got a ticket but otherwise a clean record. TD called to let me know they have declined me for renewal. They said it was a major ticket and they cannot insure me any longer. They wouldn't even discuss the issue. Oh and this is almost a year post the ticket I received and just 2 months before my insurance expires.
Horrible experience with TD auto insurance and home insurance. First of all, the sales rep were lying to the customers and trying to sell customers the service they don't need and walk you into a trap. You end up having a service that is not what you wanted and never needed. They are not there to help but to create more troubles for the consumers.
I was with TD Meloche Monnex for just over a year (house and auto). When I first signed with them I was happy as the rate was the lowest I could find. $205/mth for auto and $98 for house. I got my G licence within this year and expected my rate to decrease since I had no accidents, no tickets, no claims and I got my full G licence. I got my renewals in the mail and I was shocked to see that my auto had increased over $1000 a year. Auto insurance was now $294 and home insurance was hiked up to $118 per year. I called to find out why, thinking this could only be a mistake. The person on the phone told me there was no explanation except maybe all rates had gone up. She tried to keep me as a customer by telling me that if I had winter tires I would get a huge discount. Once she told me what the discount was (a measly $160 a year or something stupid) I laughed. They increased my auto insurance over a year, but would now give me a discount for having winter tires of $168. laughable. I shopped around and found another company that is charging less than when I first started with TD. I was told by one broker that a trick TD uses to get customers is to offer them a much lower rate at first but then on renewal, they increase it to make up for the lower premium they offered you at the beginning. Scammers!

I have auto and home insurance with TD. My husband called recently to add his car - he was placed on hold for over 1 hour. He had to end the call only to later be put back on hold for another 1 hour. I've reached out to TD online and they've not been helpful - just trite statements about "higher than normal call volumes." I do not think they value customers at all. I see that others have had similar experiences. I had to make an auto claim 5 years ago, and they were not helpful. They did not cover the full cost of a rental car after a car accident. I ended up paying $2000 out of pocket. This, along with my recent experiences with TD, makes me think it's time to consider other companies. I have another property insured by a different company and have been very happy with them. I will look into quotes with other companies when it's renewal time with TD and move on. If you are considering TD Insurance, I suggest you look into other options instead.
