Over Priced

by CIndy D on Nov 27, 2020

I have both my auto and property insurance with Aviva and now with the pandemic, I started looking around for better rates. Doing my research I found better coverage for both policies and for much cheaper, saving approx. $1000 per year. Therefore calling to cancel mid-term my policies with Aviva I am told that Aviva's short-term calculator indicates a 22% charge when my understanding from other mortgage brokers that the industry standard is 8-10%max. I want people to beware of these outstanding charges and think twice before joining Aviva. Do your research as there is way better out there. The best part of it all is that we were told we are getting a firefighter discount as well but how can that be when we are overpaying If I could give 0 stars rating I would.

AVIVA is a pure SCAM

I had 2 car insurance policies with them for many years (7 years). Next month one of my vehicle's insurance is up for insurance, I haven't got the renewal package as of yet, so I called in asking if they sent out the renewal package. At first, I was told that the renewal package was sent 2 months ago, then, I was told that I wasn't eligible for Multi-Vehicle Discount! When asked why I was told that my other car insurance was cancelled because I had 3 minor infractions over the past 3 years! That was surprising to me! I was also told that the cancellation happened 4 months ago and they sent out a registered mail - which I didn't receive - and they even that claimed my first vehicle - the one that is up for renewal - can't be insured because of the infractions!

Stolen car

by Arslan anjum butt on Oct 17, 2020

I am having a worse experience with Aviva. They have very bad customer service. My car was stolen three days ago and I reported to cops and provided them with a police report and video of the stolen car but they are not offering me a rental car. They say: "Your case is being investigated we can't give you a rental car!" It is garbage insurance! Their staff are super rude and my adjuster is telling me: "We can’t give a rental car as we don’t have the authority at the moment as your case has some block." My adjuster is not picking my calls and not replying to my emails. I told them that it is Covid 19 and I paid insurance every month and now it is your time to assist me and provide me with a rental car at least! But they are very rude... They don’t even know how to deal with their customers. I have full coverage but they are giving me a very hard time... Most of my family members are using Aviva Insurance. I told them they are doing this to me and don’t give you coverage when you need them... Especially in this Covid -19, they should not do that! I have two years old daughter and my ongoing health is not good... I am already in severe stress because of my car loss but Aviva Insurance giving me more stress.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

50 NSF fee

by mike on Oct 7, 2020

We got a letter in the mail a few days ago. They said that they were unable to charge my credit card, and they are charging me a $50 NSF fee? The monthly insurance is only $35.66. When we called them to dispute this ridiculous fee, they said that we had to contact our bank (RBC Visa) and find out why the charge was declined. They would only return the $50 IF the bank accepted responsibility for the error. Very odd customer service, but on to the next step. I called my bank, and while there was plenty of room on the credit card, they said that Aviva had been using a credit card that had a 2017 expiry date on it for the past 3 years of charges. The Aviva representative explained that they had some sort of agreement with RBC/Moneris that expired cards will still be honored, which is why it was still working for 3 years. Well as of the last charge, it stopped working for them. Aviva told us it was due to "insufficient funds", but the bank says it was because they used a 2017 expiry date that was no longer accepted. I believe what happened: RBC Visa just issued me a new card, and the 2017 old one stopped working. The weird part here is it looks like Aviva may have recently updated their system because when I first called in they told me that had the card on file with the 2024 expiry (which we never provided to them), which PROVES that they have an agreement between RBC Insurance and RBC Visa to automatically update the expiry dates when new cards are issued. My concern here is not so much over the personal $50 charge but is for the thousands of Canadians that are being charged $50 NSF fees by Aviva / RBC Insurance when a credit card doesn't work. Through our company, we have over 100 monthly credit card charges that come through, and occasionally, they bounce for whatever reason. Not once have I see a company charge us anything for that... they simply send us a notification and let us know they will try the card again in X days, or warn us that service may be interrupted after a certain date. Does anyone know the name of the government bureau that I can write to about this? Does this $50 fee for an expired expiry date seem ethical? Yes, I know that when you get a new card, it is up to you to reach out to all of your vendors, BUT every single other vendor simply lets me know they need the new #, and I've never once been charged an NSF fee for that.

Go with Anyone else

Just like the old saying, you get what you pay for. I chose Aviva 3 years ago because they had the best rate. (Actually, my broker did) I have since learned saving a few dollars is not always worth it. Aviva has terrible customer service. A while back my friend asked me if she could borrow my car for an hour to drop some stuff off at her mom's house for Easter. I said sure no problem. Unfortunately, she ended up getting in an accident (it wasn't her fault, another driver went through a red light). Called and reported it and started the claims process. Over the next few weeks, I kept getting calls from different people at Aviva asking the same questions over and over. I said I already gave you all the details and answered these questions can't you just refer to your notes instead of wasting my time? They said well the notes weren't made correctly and that was the reason for calling and asking again. 3 times apparently. Next thing I know my claim has been denied, for non-cooperation during the claims process. I couldn't believe it. It gets better. 3 weeks later I get a letter in the mail saying my insurance is cancelled for misrepresentation. I called to ask them to elaborate and they said we think you're friend was driving the car on a regular basis! Again, I was blown away. Completely ridiculous and couldn't be further from the truth. That friend had never used my car ever before that time, Aviva simply was pulling at strings finding any little loophole they could try to exploit to get out of having to pay the claim. The sad thing was the claim was only going to be around $2500 as the car was deemed a total loss and wasn't worth much due to its age. At 40 years old that was my first claim ever in my life! Perfectly clean driving record with no tickets, accidents or claims prior, my payments are always made every month without missing one ever and this is how I get treated, like a criminal. This is the most despicable company I've ever come across in my life. Stay far away, even if the other insurance quote is $10 more a month, it's worth it! It's not possible that you'll get any worse service from anyone else, it simply isn't possible.

Thieves

I was with RBC /Aviva for 5 years and since the last year, they demanded to pay in full without instalments or 70%, 30% options as they had and let me pay. They increased my premium for more than $300! I have never had any claims or accidents in my life. And when I tried to call to cancel my insurance during the COVID lockdown, it was impossible to reach any of the representatives as well the line was all the time busy! After trying several days and wasting my time (5 to 6 hours daily) finally I had the only first and last chance to speak with a representative to cancel my policy, he was taking his decisions over mine, that I have to have insurance (even that I'm not using the vehicle). Now they sent me a cancellation letter with an outstanding balance of 3 months? They are dishonest sending registered mails that do not require your signature! (something that I never heard before) to put you more in trouble. Hope more people get aware of this and boycotts Aviva shady practices.

No Transparency

Absolutely terrible company. Will never again use or recommend insurance with Aviva. Decided to increase the renewal costs multiple times after the customer initially renews insurance at a fixed rate for the year. Then, Aviva proceeds to charge a cancellation fee 3x greater than the original amount provided over the phone. The lack of transparency throughout the process and blatant poor treatment of customers to pad their bottom line speaks volumes about the company. The rates might seem discounted, but you are better off to go with a trusted auto insurance company.

Terrible Company

by Raven K on Sep 8, 2020

I received a price quote for my auto and home in May for my July 17 renewal. I accepted the quote and paid in full on or before the due date. About 2 weeks later, I get another bill from them for $11.00 which they said was a COVID adjustment. No big deal. Then, a full month after my renewal, I get yet another bill from them for $122.00. There was no explanation, just said renewal (adjusted). I called and they explained that for me to get a COVID rebate (wow, $36 for 3 months), they had reduced my mileage to 1,000 km. and then, after the COVID period was over, they had to manually re-adjust to my normal mileage of 5000 km. The COVID rebate ended June 21, my policy renewed in July. Furthermore, when they send out the renewal in May, they knew the COVID rebate expired before my renewal. I pointed out to them that they quoted me one rate then charged me another, even wrote a letter to their ombudsman asking for a pro-rata refund because I don't want to do business with a company that operates like this. I was told too bad. I'm stuck with them for almost another year. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! That's my advice and hopefully, it will prevent anyone else from having to go through the same situation I've had to deal with.

AVOID

Terrible claim experience! An adjuster refused to visit a shop - thought we had a choice of where to get our vehicles repaired. Apparently NOT! Customer service lied to me about sending out emails to get COVID relief! Rates went up under COVID! The most expensive company as well, so we will shop around. Goodbye Aviva.

Please avoid for your own good

Avoid avoid avoid! I used PC insurance and somehow the broker signed me up on Aviva. From day 1, it was one issue after another. From them missing my banking details (I set up auto-deposit) which I don't even know how it became possible since I provided a void check so no payment was withdrawn the first month. When someone called me she tried to patronize me claiming how they are going to be waving aside the NFS charge for me which I instantly reminded her that it can't be my fault when they had a void check and still managed to miss a number, this led to them rating my payment again and it went up from 254 to 274 and them billing me for 3 months claiming I needed to pay in advance. I should have cancelled the damned thing at that point. Upgrades my car 5 months down the line, called to get a quote and got a ridiculous amount in the $700 so I asked for it to be cancelled. The agent told me I'd either get a refund check or instructions on how to pay if I'm found owing, I figured I was going to get a refund since I paid in advance of one month and still had some days left in the month from my last payment. But nope, instead, I got a mail telling me they will be billing $266 directly from my bank. I wondered why that amount and why instead of getting their banking details as the agent claimed I was going to be billed directly. I called and spoke to an agent who claimed they'd review and get back to me within 2 days. I never heard from any agent no Aviva till they took my money some days ago. Please avoid this company, either their agents aren't knowledgeable or they outrightly lie to meet their sales target. They don't care about their customers and are only interested in taking and taking from you.
