Archaic, dysfunctional platform and sub-par customer service

2 out of 5 stars
I called Manulife customer service to get some answers on why my claim was denied. I spoke to an agent name "John" who I believe has a lack of experience in dealing with problems. I felt like he has anger management issues, he was a bit rude. He wasn't able to help with my problem, of course, I had to call back the second time and luckily I spoke to a different agent name "Krissy". She told me that a code error occurred on their side. That's why they kept denying my claim. Krissy told me it would take 5 business days to fix the problem. Thank you Krissy for your help, much appreciated! And as for John, next time take your time in helping people and really listen to them. I would give more stars but John was a disappointment. Thank you!
Client services cannot provide accurate information. I spoke to at least 5 representatives and each gave me a different answer. Twice I was told that a Supervisor would call me back. No call.
My emails were never answered. Even though it was confirmed to me that my claim was covered under my policy, it was rejected when I requested a refund. All I can say is that I'm glad that I was not trying to get information about a serious illness. I would have never had the strength to deal with this. The good thing is that I now know that I can no longer trust any information provided by client services. I am currently shopping for new insurance.
We added the drug benefits after my husband's knee surgery and after I started menopause. They excluded anything about his knee or my menopause NOT just from the drug plan, but from anything. Ok. But since then, now 6 years, anything we try to claim they refuse to pay without a doctor's diagnosis showing that it's not his knee or my ladyparts. Cancer pain meds? Could be the knee. Osteopath? Might be menopause. The constant jumping through hoops is terrible and wastes our time
This was forced on me by my employer. First time I have ever had any sort of health coverage in my life. Thought my 3-night stay at a hospital for hernia surgery would be covered. Not. Guess I'm flushing money down the toilet on every payday. Now that I read the booklet I see many less important things covered but not hospital charges and it was only $765. The customer service guy was ok but the product itself is utter garbage.
2016 I was off for 4 months for a bad back, Manulife's favourite trick when you called in was "we didn't receive your claim" even though you faxed in. All the paperwork I faxed to them I had to do it three times, I was even faxing the transmission sheet in to show the days and times I had faxed in the paperwork. Of course, I didn't receive one cent from Manulife. I was back to work in a month, never heard from Patty S, so I called her, she says "Oh I guess we can make a decision now". So I said to her, is this call being recorded? Yes, can you delete the recording? "No", I said:"perfect". Have you ever googled Manulife complaints? It's not pretty what's on there. Two weeks later I get my cheque. Aug 2017 I'm back off work again, for my back, I send in the paperwork, no word... a month passes and I get a call... wish I could remember this lady's name at Manulife, she said "the size of your file, it's obvious you have a problem, I'm going to do a direct deposit once we hang up". WOW, I check my account on Friday, no money, so I called on Monday and talked to the same lady, she said, the way our account is set up she cannot do direct deposit, so she express-posted my cheque, I had it on Monday. They needed updated paperwork a month later I faxed it in, no problem... I'm covered. Then they needed more paperwork for the end of Oct, I called and said my Dr is on vac ' until mid-Nov... no prob, we will cover you... Now since Dec 2017, I have been dealing with Magdalena... she is wonderful. I told her about last year and what Patty S had done. I also said it obvious Manulife has done a shuffle. They are wonderful to deal with and have been very helpful in trying to get me further down the road with my back problems. So I'm giving Manulife a thank you. I realize Manulife has to weed out the phoneys.
I've been with Manulife for health insurance for 13 years. Every year, there is a rate increase, whereas my benefits have not increased one penny. I should get out of the plan and probably will this year.
We have Manulife as our company's health and benefits insurer. We have only been with Manulife for 1 1/2 years and I have already had two multi-month disputes with them about honouring claims. They make it as difficult as possible to get your money. You have to jump through so many hoops to get your claim that it is obvious that they just hope you eventually give up and leave them your money. We were formerly with Great West Life. What a shame that our company tried to save money by switching insurers. GWL was so nice to deal with.
I opted in through my group program to get basic benefits. When the company I got glasses, dental, and health benefits from sent in claims, it was great and hassle free. The moment I tried contacting them, it drove me crazy. There is no email for the group program without signing up, and that sign up takes several days before it can be approved to create one to do so. I have tried calling, but it's either busy or it's too late to do so.

A very archaic online platform that is difficult to use even for a person under 30 such as me and many of the features don't work. Even submitting a question in their question boxes only provides automated responses via email, stating that they cannot answer any questions. It seems like this insurer is short-staffed and all Customer Service calls are sent to Manila, where the service line is terrible so it's difficult to communicate, the wait times are long, and there are occasional language difficulties. There is no real conversation or explanation provided when calling with questions, it's just a bunch of scripted lines that they recite, which is very frustrating. I don't recommend this health insurer.
