TD just another Insurance company

by Gerald on Jul 23, 2022

I've been with TD a few years now and started out pretty reasonable but five years in I am paying more than I ever thought. So this week looking for boat insurance! They won't cover boats older than 15 years and over 26 ft. Which forces me to switch companies if I want coverage. I'd call this anything but full service.

Terrible claim service!

My car was totalled in an accident that the other party claimed full liability. My insurance adjuster lowballed me by $1500 to $2000 in their valuation "offer". Their "offer" conveniently omitted the 5% GST I'd need to pay to buy another car. I did several hours of due diligence and found ample proof that if I had to buy the exact same vehicle in the same condition, I would actually be paying $2000 to $3500 MORE than their lowball offer. My due diligence was rejected outright and I was told I could hire an independent estimator, which I did. TD's adjuster didn't even call him after receiving his report, which was almost the exact same valuation as my initial research indicated. They rejected his report outright, as well. I tried talking to my adjuster's manager, but as decent as he seemed over the phone, he didn't do anything to improve TD's "offer". I was basically told I had to enter the DRP process.

What infuriates me the most is that these people were so inflexible, uncompromising and uncooperative. It's as if their JD Power 10-minute internet car valuation is the ONLY one that exists, and no other estimate is relevant. I absolutely could not believe this. No matter how much evidence the insured finds to prove their valuation, it's meaningless to TD Insurance. That's why I've put "offer" in quotes everywhere above because there IS no "offer". It's either take it or screw off.

If you're considering TD Insurance, you BETTER hope you don't need to file a claim if your car gets totalled, because YOU will get totalled, too.

Needless to say, I'll be shopping around for another provider after 30+ years and I estimate $35,000 spent in their coffers resulted in their adjusters quibbling over $1500 - $2000...they're losing a great paying client just to save TD such a pittance. Congratulations, boys!

Boy am i angry

They recommended that i get this scam of a towing company over the phone and then refused to foot the $550 towing bill. We also thoght we had collision coverage because they were charging us 40% more than what statefarm quoted us for liability coverage, turns out theyre just ridiculously expensive! I mean all this money to buy a lesson, but this is the stupidest thing ive ever had to deal with. We also apprently got a 30% discount using our university, so what are the rest of you paying for this awful coverage?

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

customer service beyond brutal

recently was involved in a no fault accident in which I was rear ended. To say that the sevice provided is brutal is an understatement. I was actually told by my agent to enlist a lawyer as "I am on my own" This was in regards to injuries and damages to my vehicle. This was a no fault accident. I was rear ended. I am now on my third injury broker, and second accident broker. They keep going on holidays. Everyone has a different story as to what coverage I have. Countless phone calls unanswered and an average wait time of an 1.5 hrs plus to talk to someone. All this while trying to have my claim processed in the 10 day time limit imposed by the goverment. Yes you have 10 days to process your claim from date of accident. My paper work did not arrive until day 6.Brutal

There are better options

I've been with TD Insurance (underwritten by Primmum) for almost 4 years, since moving to Alberta.

Initially, I got a great and affordable quote, but each successive year, with no tickets or accidents of any kind, I see my rates increase by increments of hundreds of dollars.

I called them to make some minor changes to my insurance a few weeks back, changing it from commercial to personal use, and notified them of an increase in kilometers driven to/from work. I was expecting to see my rate reduced by quite a bit due to changing to personal/commuter use, but the rep told me I wouldn't save much, and that he could add accident forgiveness to my policy and it would "break even". Well, next thing you know, my rates have increased by yet another 15%, making my annual insurance premiums DOUBLE what they were just 4 years ago - and again, no tickets, suspensions, accidents, nothing. Perfectly clean driving record.

So I jumped ship. Found another reputable insurer that quoted me less than TD originally did when I first signed up with them 4 years ago, which will save me about $700 this year.

Moral of the story: There are way more affordable insurers out there.

Won't insure replacement car

by Bump21 on Mar 14, 2016

I have only been a TD customer for a few years with a clean record. Last year (2015) I had a claim after an animal hit and this year my husband had a accident and wrote off his car. The claim and payout was fairly quick but then they refused to insure the replacement car. Its a 2011 crown vic - former police car. I have been fighting with them for 4 days over this and today got told to look around for another insurance company just in case as there is no guarantee they will insure it even after jumping through all their hoops.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Answers? What answers?

Having had my auto insurance jump 29.3% I thought that I'd ask why. I did not get an honest or accurate answer. I was told that it was "probably" because my policy was bundled with other peoples policies (a form of "group" insurance) that have had substantial claims. I also asked FSCO (Financial Services Commission of Ontario) to look into the matter and they couldn't even get an answer. Bottom line: According to TD, the government has apparently allowed them to raise my rates without cause or justification (at least not explainable to me or FSCO). I would have been a lot happier if they were at least truthful with the matter. As such I'm looking elsewhere. And don't get me started with their home insurance either (that one I'm cancelling). Otherwise, their rates aren't astronomical nor cheap - about average plus in my opinion. So much for good treatment and honesty after being on the same policy for over 20 years (even with a clean license and no claims in the last 15+ years).
