Super LONG claim waiting time

We have been loyal TD Meloche Monnex customers for over 25 years with zero accidents or auto claims. We never needed to use our insurance coverage until we were rear ended through no fault of our own on 3/20/2024. The way our claim was handled by TD Insurance was unethical and extremely frustrating. Our main complaints are:
- TOTAL LOSS - TD declared the vehicle a complete loss on 3/27 based on an estimate that was only 62% of the value of comparable replacement vehicles. I had to spend countless hours to convince them that they needed to re-assess this. Eventually, they did a vehicle tear down and found the extent of damages was supposedly equivalent to 100% of the value of comparable replacement vehicles and declared it a complete loss again on 4/15.
- LOW BALLING - We received completely bogus valuations on 4/2, 4/4, 4/8 and 4/10. Finally, we received a valuation on 4/17 which was 95% the value of comparable replacement vehicles and was an increase of $4600 or 20% higher than their first valuation. We finally agreed with this value so we could move forward with the settlement.
- RENTAL CAR SHENANIGANS - On 3/20, TD told us we didn't qualify for a rental car because we had removed the Grand Touring solution from our policy a few months prior. Because it was a no-fault accident, we did qualify for a rental car. Still, TD tried to tell me it would be up to 2 years to determine who was at fault because the accident occurred in BC while we were insured in AB. The RCMP declared it not our fault the same day, 3/20. It still took TD 3 days of calls before they arranged the rental car for us. Then they kept trying to take the rental car away with each bogus settlement they offered. I'm still fighting with them to reimburse me for rental car expenses from 4/17 to 4/22 more than 2 months after the accident.
- FEAR TACTICS - My son was driving the car when we were rear ended, and TD tried to insinuate repeatedly that we weren't covered at all because he wasn't on the policy. This is untrue, as he had a learner's permit and was covered through our insurance until he receives his Class 5 license.
The only positive was that they handled our medical claim fairly, and we received good medical coverage for 3 months after the accident.
RECOMMENDATION: Never accept the first few offers from your insurance company as they will always low ball you. Spend the time to research what the car and upgrades are really worth (depreciated) so that you can get a fair amount. Don't let them bully and scare you.
I had an accident in June 2022. It was a brand new vehicle. Just 15 days old. Other driver's fault. TD Insurance settled with an amount much lower than the market rate. Adjustor doesn't receive a call and no response over email. Frequent customer service calls and no positive outcome. I will never recommend having a TD insurance policy to anyone. It is better to pay something extra to get better service rather than dealing with unprofessional elements.
Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.
My first communication with TD was that I should surrender my vehicle to TD as salvage and look for a different vehicle. I did not receive any information as to how much money they were paying me regarding this proposal. I have played phone tag ever since with several TD representatives. Phone calls go to voicemail. Emails are not answered. I have 2 estimates from reputable auto repair shops that gave an approximate figure of $7,500 to $8,200. After 3 weeks I finally reached a representative who said TD’s drive-in auto repair service centre’s estimate was $4000 higher than the estimates I received. Therefore they claim that my car is non-repairable and a total loss. I am asking them to change my claim as repairable because I have 2 auto body shops that said the damage is repairable. I am able to drive my vehicle. I was rear-ended. I will even take rebuilt status if I have to but after one month I am still waiting for a written confirmation from TD that they will change my vehicle to repairable and how much money they will pay me to fix my vehicle.
I know that they want to claim it as salvage because it’s an older vehicle but I don’t have the money to replace my low 150,000km vehicle. I bought it new. It’s in excellent condition. I am very upset by this whole situation. I don’t know if other insurance companies act the same way. I have never had a claim before. I am not impressed with TD’s customer service. They aren’t on my side. I am the victim of a rear-end crash and my own insurance company is not advocating for me.
I tried to call them, the system put me on hold for 20 min and then dropped the line. It happened 2 times. I greatly regret that I brought my lightly damaged luxury car to TD Insurance claim centre. They said that they will assess the damage on-site, instead, they just confiscated my car! They sold my car to somebody shop in Burlington and offered compensation to me that was not matching the car value. The process was slow, took about 3 weeks to negotiate compensation with them and another couple of weeks to get the money.
I had a tree fall on a trailer insured on its maiden voyage. I previously had insured a tent for 7 years. The first call they claimed it wasn’t insurance. The next call they figured out their error. Took them a month to appraise. So we purchased a cover to protect the dime-size hole made by a puncture. Well, they don’t patch! They replace so a new roof writes off the trailer. Useless insurance company. It was out one day and they claim it devalued 1100$. A very expensive night!
I am a TD client since 2013, recently my honda van got damaged in a recent hail in Calgary, Alberta. I filed the claim the next day, the advisor informed my car was a total loss, he was not too good with communication for a couple of weeks and then... he disappeared, for 2 months! I was calling their different numbers, sent hundreds of emails but got nothing for almost 60 days! I was only provided rental for only 1 week in this 2.5 months period of "no car". Eventually, someone got back to me to help and offered me $8500 for the van I bought in 2017 for $22,000! This vehicle was financed and I still have to pay $11,000 to the financial institution for this van. They aren't even giving any chance of negotiation. This is brutal and broke all my confidence in TD insurance... A big company with pathetic customer service.
They play the waiting game and dodge communications to avoid paying claims! Horrible human beings hired as representatives and "managers" who don't care and seem to be incentivized to rip you off. I had a simple not-at-fault accident and they wasted months of back and forth, switched me to another representative after mine had gone unresponsive for months and now claim the one year is passed and that I will not be paid what I was due. Go anywhere else but here is you want to be "covered"... can't call it coverage if they don't pay!

Last year Nov, in a no-fault incident, my car was total loss. However, no agent contacts me after a whole month while I need the insurance coverage to rent a car. I have to wait on the phone line and after several attempts I finally reach the supervisor. I was told the agent who handling my case is not at the office and now another agent is assigned. Afterward, the compensation amount is far below market value of my hit vehicle, and it cost me one more week to bargain with the agent for a reasonable price. I immediately cancel it once the coverage period is over, still I need to schedule a phone call in order to cancel it. The customer service has bad attitude and does not care if I cancel it or not. Overall, price isn't attractive, bad CS, worst claim experience. I will NEVER use any service from TD, including bank service.
