So far so....bad!

by Frustrated Fella on Sep 27, 2019
2 out of 5 stars

I was with State Farm for a good while and never had one problem with them, always helpful friendly people who weren't afraid to be in touch if something was amiss. Then came Desjardins... I decided to stay the course and give them a chance expecting to get similar good service and my rates stayed about the same. Yes they called and said they would like to arrange a meet and greet at their office, they were even quick to get me quotes on vehicles I was shopping around for but that's where the pleasantries ended! I've always owned cheap, used vehicles and have always insured them with liability and comprehensive ALWAYS AND ONLY. After a little chat with them recently it appears one of my vehicles for some reason has collision on it and the other is missing the comprehensive... I've never changed my policies (no reason to) and I'll admit maybe I haven't read every little word on every little piece of mail I've gotten from them but considering I brought to their attention that I wouldn't have changed my policies and some kind of error must have occurred during the changeover you would think that they would take some time to investigate the matter but no. I had an answer much too brief and quick to have been taken seriously. I shopped around and found better service at a much better price (saving $500+/year) with more flexibility and options! "We dont want to lose your business" I was told, well talk is cheap and actions speak volumes to me! Not only can they not even come close to matching another reputable company with a local office to keep my business but they won't take the time to investigate a potential internal error they may have made during the changeover, I can't say I feel as if I'm being very well taken care of. Oh, how I miss State Farm!

Insurance premium increase

by Steve on Feb 13, 2019
2 out of 5 stars

They unbelievably contacted me to justify their increases. Below are their communications and my response: The statistics tell the story. There are several factors that impact the premiums Canadian drivers pay today. Here are some facts and stats to help you better understand: Distracted driving has become a widespread problem across Canada; there’s more distraction on the roads than ever. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions Canada-wide and is responsible for a greater percentage of road fatalities than impaired driving. Drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in a car accident or near-crash situation. While vehicles are technologically more advanced and do a great job of keeping Canadians safe, their high tech components are also more expensive to repair, which contributes to increased claims costs. A simple fender bender now costs thousands of dollars to fix, which was not the case before. 4 tips to help keep your premium down. Even if you have little control over the stats and facts stated above, there are ways to be proactive! Take a look at the tips below to help lower your auto insurance premium. Stay claims and conviction-free. To this day, being a careful and focused driver remains the best way to avoid an accident. Not only can distracted driving compromise your safety and other people’s, but you could also end up getting a ticket or getting into an accident, which both impact auto insurance premiums. Insure all your vehicles with us. The math is simple: the more vehicles you insure with your insurer, the more you save. Reduce coverage on older vehicles. If you own an older car that’s not worth repairing, consider removing the Collision and Comprehensive coverages. Consider a usage-based driving program. Sign up for a usage-based driving program. You could receive an additional discount on your premium for having good driving habits. Get informed! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This email is insulting. I don’t have time to rant on about the Ontario insurance industry, which is known for collusion and corruption, but here are some key points to consider before sending messages like this to your clients. 1) Neither my wife nor I are distracted drivers, so why are our premiums increasing for a second consecutive year? Make the offenders pay more. 2) We don’t drive expensive to repair vehicles. Increase premiums for the wealthy who drive expensive cars. 3) We are claims and conviction free, yet we continue to be penalized financially. 4) Why is our home insurance also increasing significantly for the second year consecutively? 4) For what it is worth, I registered a complaint with the Insurance Ombudsman. I certainly hope Desjardins improves their client-retention marketing and communication strategies. We’ll be shopping around for our renewal unless Desjardin significantly improves their offering.

Increase in rate

by longdistance on Jan 11, 2018
2 out of 5 stars

I have been with this company for over 7 years, and year over my rates have been dropping steadily. I even signed up for their Adjusto program and maintained a good driving record (no claims or anything). My Adjusto savings even went up to a high percentage, resulting in good savings. However, this year when my insurance was up for renewal, my rate went up by a whole 24% for the year. I contacted customer service, and they did not know what to tell me other than the area where I live rating was the cause. They even told me had it not been for the Adjusto program the increase would have been 40%. I have had zero claims or tickets, but yet they increased my premium by such a large amount solely due to where I live. Highly disappointing as it very much feels like because I was paying a low rate they decided to increase it as they please, and they just gave me a canned response.

Auto insurance just went up!!!

by angry customer on Nov 28, 2017

I have been with this company for awhile. There were numerous complaints on various websites, but I failed to listen. My insurance just magically went up by almost 500 dollars for the year and I have been a perfect driver. No tickets, no claims nothing! The only thing they could tell me was that in the year there were a lot of claims for my area. Bullcrap!!!! Let's see the numbers. Let's see the claims for all the different areas. If you are okay with your premiums going up every year, with no sound reason and no reward for being a good driver? Go with these people. I just have listened. Listen here, these people are not worth it. If you still decide to, remember, you will keep increasing each year for no reason. They are not worth it. Go somewhere else.

Money grabbing insurance

by Kvu86 on Oct 11, 2017

I've had much insurance and as I know if you have a good driving record every year your annual premium usually goes down and insurance would be cheaper except for Desjardins! Instead of awarding the good drivers they raise the cost to 60 dollars extra per month from paying 195 per month to 251 per month when it came to my renewal I've had no accidents or claims... Called another insurance and they were able to give me the coverage for 215 per month that a saving of over 500 a year... Never will I return as a customer of Desjardins. They need to learn to compete with their competitors and stop trying to take people's hard-working money... horrible just horrible rates. Anyone thinking of switching to this insurance company I advise you to try someone else!

Jacked up rates at renewal

by Some1 on Aug 25, 2017
2.5 out of 5 stars

I have been with them for one year. I'm a driver with 15 years experience, clean history, no accidents, no tickets. I shop and compare my insurance every year at renewal time. So I was astonished when I received the renewal from them - $430 more per year. When I called in to inquire why my rate increased so much, they said it was nothing specific to me and that they had to pay out a lot of fraudulent claims so everyone's rates went up. The guy on the phone sounded like he was reading off a script. When I compared the breakdown of the new premium to last year they substantially increased the liability portion and even the accident forgiveness endorsement went up from $60 a year to $100! What a ripoff! I searched online and found 7 other insurance companies who had a lower rate than Desjardins. Personally, I think what they do to lure in good drivers with clean history is they give you ridiculously low rate in the first year and then jack them at renewal hoping that you will stay and not bother with comparing other options. Or they want to force you to use their smartphone app to track your driving habits. Apparently, if you use it for a whole year you may save a bit of money at renewal time at the expense of personal privacy and them knowing where you are all the time. Sorry, no, next! So if you do get a crazy low rate with them online, just beware that they will likely jack it up a lot at renewal. Always shop and compare at renewal and have no loyalty to any insurance company. They're all the same!

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Disappointing conclusion!

by Robert Heinricks on May 14, 2015
2 out of 5 stars

After searching for a more comprehensive insurance program that included Home & Auto at a reasonable price I cancelled my Desjardins auto insurance effective May 1, 2015.
Unfortunately, they would not give me a formula detailing a cancellation charge and then made an unauthorized withdrawal from my bank for 30% of the remaining two and a half months of my contract!
I will never recommend or shop Desjardins because of what I call a shady, and underhanded process at that company.

Desjardins - Doesn't add up!

by Tom on Jan 13, 2014
2 out of 5 stars

I called Desjardins after creating my on-line quote for our 2 cars. I had my quote printed out and in front of me. Basically I answered most of the questions over again with the agent (loosely referred to as an Agent) . She gave me a quote after randomly asking several questions (which were already answered on the quote that I had generated) but the quote was 200 and something higher than the quote that I had manually generated myself, however after double-checking all of my answers, we found that there was no differences other than the cost that she quoted. Somehow after mumbling her way through something, she came back with a slightly lower number and once again I explained that her number was still higher so there she goes again, asking me the same questions over again and then finally she get to a number that was $80 less than the quote that I got myself (without changing anything!). No complaining from me there! Then I was asked if I wanted their "adjusto" "thing" which would record our driving habits; it would knock off another 5% from our rates so I went for it. The only problem was, is that now she comes back with another number which was more than 95% of the quote which she just gave to me. I was becoming rather impatient at this point but I calmly explained how to reduce my quote by 5%. From that point onward she barely listened to me at all and denied haven given me the quote that I agued she had. Then I suggested that we just go back to the original quote and then proceed to lower it by 5% for the "adjusto" thing but then she came up with a different starting number altogether. At this point I figured that Desjardins was not a company that I wanted to deal with if their agent could not do basic arithmetic (most of which I thought was intentional).
She then hung up on me! Unbelievable! I thought about how a claim scenario might go with them and after reading some of the reviews on this site, I kind of get the gist of what it might have be like. I have no time for companies like Desjardins. Too bad, thought I was going to get a good deal on my car insurance!
