If I could rate negative stars, I would

by Amanda Miller on Sep 13, 2024
1 out of 5 stars

The most unprofessional company I’ve had the “pleasure” of dealing with. They will do everything in their power to not cover your claim. Took months for them to decide that the work they told me to go ahead and do (because I was covered for it), to in fact not to be covered for it. Absolutely atrocious mannerisms and extremely rude. I don’t know how they’re still in business, honestly.

Water escape and rupture water flood

by Shirley on Oct 12, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

It’s already been a year and a half since the water escape and rupture of March 23, 2022 in my kitchen with secondary results also leading into the 3 adjacent basement rooms and staircase. The decision to wait till spring has caused extensive damage to the entire house with air borne spores and the restoration company told SGI Canada this one fell through the cracks. I have had No kitchen taps since the incident of March 23, 2022. The kitchen cupboards are torn apart, countertop had been cracked and the dishes get done in the laundry room. The last year and a half June 27, 2022, when the restoration company came out to do the tear out in the kitchen the linoleum was tested and it contains Asbestos and the kitchen corner two walls has extensive water and mold damage to it. The restoration company just covered it up with a black bag and tape and left it like a bandage. Pushed the broken cabinets back and walked away. Both myself, my husband and our cats and dogs have been sick since the exposure of Asbestos and all the 7 different mold airborne particles from the house water damages that are neglected by the insurance company. No clean up from the restoration company no approvals for anything until 7 months later only to hear from SGI Canada that she is waiting till spring 2023 to do the work and I only have 2 years to complete the work. I am disabled and was in a car accident December 21, 2023, I know how a lot of you people feel when we’ve been neglected by our insurance company. It’s terrible and they always seem to get away with their actions to harm innocent people.

Terrible insurance

by Larry on Jul 6, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

Been a customer for close to 40 years. Never missed a payment. Had two claims last year due to Mother Nature, still dealing with one claim, for almost a year! Both times was told that being a great customer my premiums would not go up!!!! Received yearly renewal and went up $2000 or 80% of the past premium. Called 3 times to discuss, but being busy they will return my call... Nothing return call other than to say my premium is due …lol. Cancelled my account with them!!!
Amazing, I have had 3 different policies with them over the years, after today nothing exists with them !!
One terrible company, as the old boys say!!
It’s all good until you need or use it`1

Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.

Their standard response is "No".

Had hail damage, literally every house surrounding me in the neighbourhood had shingles replaced. SGI said my roof still had five years. I looked for myself, shingles were down to the paper in places. Never never again would I use or endorse this company... never! Super bad! Don't waste your money.

Friendly, no hassle with claim

by Dalbo on Aug 25, 2021
5 out of 5 stars

Had a water leak in my ensuite which entered a room below. Put a claim in and the adjuster was very friendly and proactively followed up when repairs were completed. I only have good things to say about how easy the claim process was. Everything I expected to be covered and repaired was done so and in a timely manner.

Greedy!

I have been a client with them for years and never had ONE claim with these crooks. However year after year they have been increasing my monthly payments. I called them on it one time and they gave me this lame excuse that it was due to inflation. Please. This company made over 70 million dollars in profit last year and they need to nickel and dime a single income homeowner and blame inflation. I hope they realize what low ethics and morals they have.

Sewer backup

by Eric Walberg on Apr 29, 2021
1 out of 5 stars

Today I went to SGI to inquire about the next step in the process. What I learned is that if the sewer back up occurs as a result of an issue on the street the onus is on the city to repair. If the problem is in our yard, insurance will cover the cost. If the problem is located under our house then you are on the hook for the repairs.
In addition, should I choose to make this claim I lose my no claim benefit of five hundred dollars for three years? In the end, add the thousand dollar deductible plus the loss of no claim for three years and my total bill to make a claim is twenty-five hundred dollars.
SGI is a huge rip-off as I pay them a huge amount of over three thousand dollars a year for insurance and they don't want to cover anything... Save your money and go elsewhere

Stay away from SGI

The water claim that just won’t go away. All I want is what I had replaced. Seems as if between the Insurance company and the Adjusting company, they will go to every option not to have your items fixed properly or replaced. Is this not why an individual buys insurance???

Are you a condo unit tenant? Remember that neither your condominium corporations' policy nor your landlord's insurance policy protects you as a tenant (3rd part liability, contents, etc.). If you do not have your own insurance policy, get your condominium insurance quote today.

Not even 'HALF of coverage!'

First, an adjustor comes to check the damage of the garage fire and says "well you are covered for $43,000.00, BUT we both know you WON'T get that." I took that easily enough as I DID NOT expect it. So I contacted a couple of places and got estimates, One of 33,000 and a second at 27,000. Ok.....adjuster says "No, these are still too high" Got another, for just the garage, and it was a package, costing just over $7000 to which he jumped at saying he would stroke the cheque out for. NOW it got interesting...Because the garage pad developed cracks and would be about $5000 to replace, but the adjustor said "The concrete expert said a garage pad would not sustain damage in a fire."... Even though I sent pictures of the pad and the cracks....and I had stated there was 1 crack in the pad when he was out! It got hot enough that a door inside, (an entry door) with the metal covering, was BENT over from the heat. The damage to the garage was so severe that the fire inspector could not even tell where it started in the garage. SO, now even more irritated, I move on, tired of the royal screwing by them, that I say to pay me out, 15,000 and we'll be done....he returned with a nope, if you want a payout, that would have to be worked out, as the depreciated value! I am totally lost with this entire system. Also, very sure that because I live in North Central, paying higher premiums, they treat me as the second rate only to get my premiums, and dance around the claim and coverage! I will make up a second review, once this gets settled....or if I go to a lawyer with this!
