Had Insurance with them for over 20 years. Our house renewal comes up and the policy is totally different then the original offering a lot less and wanting a higher premium. Make sure you check all new policies before signing they may be trying to pull a fast one on You. Defiantly won't use again.
We have a more than 20 yrs claim free history with AMA. Last month, there was a leak in our basement and we opened a claim. An adjuster came with a contractor, but we haven't received an estimate yet, so we haven't even decided if we will claim anything. What we received, was a call that our insurance is going up by 25% because we may claim something in the future! It's basically a blackmail. They are very happy to collect the premiums but they are definitely not willing to pay out. I would not recommend this insurance company. Even though they are claiming that this is normal practice in the insurance industry, I don't think it's ethical. We were told that our premium will go back down if we close the claim.
Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.
2014 - 1200CAD for house insurance
2015 - 1500CAD for house insurance
2016- 1800CAD for house insurance
2017 - 1916CAD proposal for house insurance in the mailbox today.
Called to cancel all my policies today (Nov 2016) after a talk to a representative. Seems like they lure you in at a reasonable price and then increase the policy year after year by 20-30%. Although the lady blamed it on natural events causing them to paying out more (needles to say that got me even more angry, never made any claims, never gotten any insurance money paid out by them, so it would be hard for them to blame it on me as a bad customer).
Also I'm a mortgage free customer and bought my house for 480 000 CAD. Go figure... I'm leaving with rates like that...
So having cancelled car insurance and membership, (see AMA car insurance review), several years previously, I had now had a claim, with AMA for hail damage to my roof and now house insurance renewal was due. (was not impressed with them in the dealing of the house claim either). So the AMA sent me a letter to say that they would only renew my house insurance if I paid $100 membership fee! I said, "I haven't had membership for about four years". The lady was very nice, but said, "it is policy, and sometimes they just miss that you don't have it. Great way to run a business! Anyway, the AMA would not even give me a quote for house insurance until I paid $100. Totally gouging the 'little person' I feel. So, my previous years AMA insurance cost me $814 plus they wanted $100 membership. I don't think so. I looked around.
I now have house insurance with Square One in Vancouver, (cover AB as well). It is costing me $642.36....and....I don't have to pay $100 membership! Apparently, the longer people stay with AMA, the more your rates get hike up and you get sucked in. It really does pay to shop around.
I really hope this helps!
Have been customer for over 10 years now. Over that time I had 2 minor claims and a cleaning claim following the Fort McMurray wildfire - in the last 20 months my home insurance has gone from $1800 (plus their additional membership fee) to just under $5000 (plus their membership fee - remember membership pays). Stay away from these guys they’re just crooks.
