worst home insurance

by Chuoi on Aug 9, 2014
1 out of 5 stars

Their home insurance is absolutely the worst, some plumbing issue that required a room be stripped down, lower half of the dry wall to the flooring had to be taken out, took a month and a half before anyone showed up to remove it, left all the garbage at the front of the house for over a week, they said flooring will take atleast a month to order, before any restoration even begins, this whole process is a joke.

Were not easy to work with when my home changed from joint ownership to single ownership - would not remove previous owners name even though all paperwork had been completed by lawyers (title was change, mortgage was changed...but AMA would not change policy to reflect name change). When I cancelled, I was not impressed to find much better coverage at a much lower cost elsewhwere (but was happy to find it, just not impressed to find insurance company I had for years was charging so much for so little)

Quote wasn't followed after it was paid

Advisor tried to charge me an extra $217 after I already paid the yearly premium. Appears they are running a money scam.
I have been a AMA member for 45 years and this is the reward.

Worse ever

A fire that took place in my building (no fault of mine) leads me to believe that I can no longer get insurance from them. They paid $26,000 to have items from one bed apartment cleaned and just over $7,000 to replace said items. It would have been less expensive to replace all items. How can a no fault claim lead to this kind of treatment it’s absolutely disgusting and disgraceful, I WILL NEVER EVER RECOMMEND THIS AWFUL COMPANY TO ANYONE.

Thieves...

Have been customer for over 10 years now. Over that time I had 2 minor claims and a cleaning claim following the Fort McMurray wildfire - in the last 20 months my home insurance has gone from $1800 (plus their additional membership fee) to just under $5000 (plus their membership fee - remember membership pays). Stay away from these guys they’re just crooks.

Not sure what I was paying for. When the wildfire came and had to evacuate, AMA assured me all my expenses would be covered and to save all my receipts. I was displaced for over a month! Now they're telling me there's a $5000 limit to my expenses. You guys are useless.

My wife and I tried submitting out claim due to the wildfire. Wow, simply put. They don't give a damn about people's claim with regards to the wildfire. They do however love and enjoy collecting your money but as per your claim. "Screw yourself sir and hope your home burned cause we ain't covering all that! We issued you 3 grand from the beginning that should be enough to to cover for all your losses.

Thank you sir and have a wonderful year.
That's the message they send to my family and the people of fort mcmurray.

Watch Renewal Policies

by webster on Dec 1, 2016

Had Insurance with them for over 20 years. Our house renewal comes up and the policy is totally different then the original offering a lot less and wanting a higher premium. Make sure you check all new policies before signing they may be trying to pull a fast one on You. Defiantly won't use again.

AMA insurance sucks

by Djurdjica on Nov 21, 2016

We have a more than 20 yrs claim free history with AMA. Last month, there was a leak in our basement and we opened a claim. An adjuster came with a contractor, but we haven't received an estimate yet, so we haven't even decided if we will claim anything. What we received, was a call that our insurance is going up by 25% because we may claim something in the future! It's basically a blackmail. They are very happy to collect the premiums but they are definitely not willing to pay out. I would not recommend this insurance company. Even though they are claiming that this is normal practice in the insurance industry, I don't think it's ethical. We were told that our premium will go back down if we close the claim.

Sad sad

2014 - 1200CAD for house insurance
2015 - 1500CAD for house insurance
2016- 1800CAD for house insurance
2017 - 1916CAD proposal for house insurance in the mailbox today.

Called to cancel all my policies today (Nov 2016) after a talk to a representative. Seems like they lure you in at a reasonable price and then increase the policy year after year by 20-30%. Although the lady blamed it on natural events causing them to paying out more (needles to say that got me even more angry, never made any claims, never gotten any insurance money paid out by them, so it would be hard for them to blame it on me as a bad customer).

Also I'm a mortgage free customer and bought my house for 480 000 CAD. Go figure... I'm leaving with rates like that...
