Horrible

I have been a customer with Allstate here in Alberta, Canada for over 20 years...no at-fault accidents and insuring multiple rental properties, my primary residence and all of our family vehicles with Allstate. In September 2019, another driver hit me from behind, I sustained injuries and immediately reported the accident. It took forever for anyone to get back to me...to the point where I had to file a complaint. Allstate wasn't even responding to the company who was their "preferred" auto repairer. Finally, after getting really angry and complaining and the car repair place doing the same, I got authorization to have my car fixed. I was assigned an injury adjuster who never returned my calls and finally after about 3 weeks called late at night leaving a message full of personal excuses why she hadn't returned my calls. Then I never heard from her again. I was getting physiotherapy and seeing my doctor and still couldn't contact anyone from Allstate. Finally, after complaining of several occasions to the Allstate person who sold me my insurance, I got assigned to an injury adjuster. Again, I could never get ahold of him, he never called, he never followed up and again after emailing him and saying I was going to file a formal complaint and wanted to speak to his manager, I got a call and an email. I remained at work (heavy-duty mechanic apprentice) and was struggling. The work is very heavy and my injuries were not getting better... I was beginning to have numbness in my neck and arms and reported this to my insurance adjuster, my physio, my doctor and I was told I shouldn't be doing regular job duties because it was delaying my recovery. My Allstate adjuster was completely aware. I was told by my physio to ask my employer for alternate duties during my recovery. I contacted my employer and let them know that my injuries were from an MVA (and not work-related) and explained the problems I was having in performing my pre-accident work duties. They said they would get back to me within hours, I received an emailed letter from my employer, terminating me because "I was not able to do my regular job duties". I contacted Allstate immediately because I didn't qualify for any kind of disability benefits through work and couldn't do my regular job duties. I let them know that I had been terminated when I asked for alternate duties because the injuries weren't allowing me to do my regular, pre-accident work duties. I asked the Allstate adjuster, what I was supposed to do and at the same time, I asked about help shovelling snow, etc. He did not address the weekly disability benefit (my policy premiums covered but I wasn't aware of) but he did say he would pay for help shovelling snow. I kept bringing up the fact that had I not had the accident, I would still be working and it was the injuries from the MVA and not being able to do my job were what caused the job loss. He didn't really address this at all. Meanwhile, I contacted a lawyer to help me get an ongoing payment from the employer because I was a contract worker with a set term contract and I thought that I would be able to get ongoing payment because it was no fault of mine that I was not able to work. My legal pockets (visa) are not deep as I am a single mom so the claim didn't go long. The employer was willing to go on to trial and I didn't have any more money so all I got was wages they had owed me in my last week and had to sign a non-disclosure statement promising not to disclose the details of my termination and the name of the employer. I kept the Allstate adjuster "in the loop" the entire time. Allstate even approved years worth of psychology appointments to help me deal with the fact that "As a result of the MVA injuries, I was terminated from my job". Finally, I am paying my auto premiums for 2020/2021 and I notice I'm paying a premium for Weekly Indemnity benefits and when I questioned this (wanting this removed) I was told it was mandatory (basically, there is a government portion of every policy that is required and mandated under a standard government policy). I was angry because I had been suffering financially for a year, by this point and the Allstate agent was barely involved in my claim let alone guide me through getting the benefits I was entitled to. I contacted him immediately and he sends me the "forms". Since my doctor and psychologist have been following me since day 1, the forms were filled out quickly. My doctor was completely aware and in agreement that I was not able to perform my heavy job duties as a heavy-duty mechanic apprentice and filled out the forms accordingly as did my psychologist. I submitted all of the information including a letter from my employer saying that I was terminated because I couldn't do my job; a record of employment showing the termination date; dr's letters; (physio reports which Allstate has on file talking about the termination and what the job duties were doing to my injuries); a timeline letter outlining the sequence of events from the date of injury to present. Within a day, I receive an email (not a letter) denial of my claim simply saying that because of the circumstances I was not considered disabled as per the definition of the policy. The adjuster did not even make one phone call to me or to my medical providers to discuss the claim (which is what claims adjudication does). The email indicated that I was terminated because the employer didn't have modified duties. This response was odd. I have been a disability claims adjudicator for over 20 years and knew how to read insurance policies and legislation so I pulled the Alberta Standard Auto policy and their definition of disability under an Auto Insurance claim indicates that weekly indemnity Section B benefits cannot be claimed unless one is "wholly and continuously" disabled by the injuries from the automobile accident". In accordance with the Alberta Standard Automobile Policy, this definition of disability means that the disability must prevent one from doing "any and all of your job duties". Well, the Allstate adjuster is saying that because I could have done modified duties, I do not qualify (I think this is what he is saying but his email is not clear). Needless to say, not once did my employer contact me to say they couldn't provide modified duties (Allstate is making an assumption based on nothing) and nowhere in the employer's termination letter did it say I was being terminated because they didn't have modified duties (again, Allstate adjuster made an assumption based on his own opinion and nothing else). The fact is that the definition of disability says that "you must not be able to do any and all of the duties of your job". It does not say "you must be unable to perform any work". I have contacted the Allstate Ombudsman and have never received anything more than the generic email in response to my submission for contact. I am disgusted with this provider. Customer service has gone into the toilet and they have people working for them who have NO idea how to do the job let alone make claims decisions based on facts.

Stay Away.

I was at an auto show and answered a questionnaire on an iPad about my then current insurance company. An agent contacted me shortly after and quoted me a rate that was much lower, so I switched over. I was also offered first accident forgiveness, among other things and was told that I had a traffic ticket that could be waived to get this stellar package. Low and behold, I had an accident 4 days later that was a total loss. Magically, I was not entitled to the accident forgiveness due to a traffic ticket that was on my record (yes, the one that was waived). I then realized that I was the victim of the old bate-and-switch sales tactic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait-and-switch). I was appalled. For the next two and a half months, I went through pure hell trying to get my claim paid out. I brought this to the attention of the "manager" and was only made to feel like an a-hole in the end. She was quite a good debater and it was then that I realized there was nothing I could do and would never win this argument. Come my one year renewal, I was terminated from the policy with a balance owing that I was never even made aware of! Not once did they even make the slightest attempt to call my phone number that was in their system. This prompted them to send letters to my old address (I strictly remember updating them with my new one) and finally sending me to a collection agency. Dealing with Allstate was the absolute WORST experience I have ever had with ANY company in my 38 years of existing on this planet. Do yourself a favour and stay away from these shysters.

Company is a Scam: Forced to Sue My Insurance!

My partner was involved in an accident that was deemed to be 100% the other parties fault. There is honestly so many horrible things that have occurred (in regards to Allstate’s customer service), that it is impossible to fit this into a single review.
Long story short, it took over a month for an adjuster to reach out. They low-balled the repair costs, resulting it going into the shop, and them claiming it was a write off. They offered no car rental. They then offered 50% market value of the vehicle, which we disputed. Over 3 months later, and being escalated several times to the “top of the claims department” we have been ignored. Best part? After waiting for a respectable offer, the heads of the claims department expressed a dire interest to leave lawyers out of this situation, and then offered us $1.68 less than the original offer for the pain and suffering through this ordeal. This is honestly insulting, and those who pretend to care should be ashamed.
We have reached out to our personal lawyer and are in the process of filing a lawsuit.
To summarize, this company is a scam. No one in this company cares about their customers and will fight tooth and nail to rip you off.

Rip off Company

I was paying 600$ monthly for home and auto but when I had accident. They do not responce to any request and do not care for clients. I am waiting for two years no claim payments. They bribe lawyers for not to pay. And not work properly and ignore your case. So even with lawyers you get to nowhere.

Worst experience ever

by Z Slugocki on Dec 9, 2022

Was the third party in the accident, someone run a red and hit a minivan crossing on a green pushing him into me.
Was towed to the reporting center, made the report then towed to a collision repair shop. Phoned Allstate to report the accident and was assigned a claim advisor.
The next day a senior claim advisor called and told me I have to sign a release for them to take the car back to their preferred repair shop or I’ll have to pay for the storage
Asked about the claim but was told it’s not her department but offered me a settlement for the car sight unseen. Still no response from my assigned advisor after numerous phone messages and emails or her manager, then a cheque arrived with no investigation or dialogue
Lodged a complaint with their Ombudsman but no response. What kind of a company is this? Now I have to hire a lawyer to clean this mess up. Stay away from this company at all costs.

Worse company

Took me 4 months to get a cheque. It also took 4 months to start a physio evaluation. I kept getting transferred from one claim adjuster to another. No one ever emailed or called me back. Had to get the ombudsman involved and in 2 days, solved. I would never pick this company. It took about 45 minutes to get to an agent. The agent with transferred to another, which transferred me to someone's voicemail and no response back. The whole process went in this order for many times. Just terrible customer service.

WORST COMPANY STAY AWAY

by TJ on Apr 5, 2019

We have had nothing but added stress just because we made such a foolish mistake of switching to Allstate - no one answers a phone, calls anyone back, they lie, they don't want to do things by the book either. Even when you try to go up the chain and speak to the Ombudsman Team - that department won't even call you back. Their staff will question you as to why you didn't stop an accident from happening when you had zero fault- they sure did a great job of basically causing me to have a mental break down. Thanks for that Their own manager in Calgary told me how horrid of an experience it was for him to file a claim with Allstate. How horrible his adjuster was and go figure it was the same guy who was assigned to our file.

Don't be fooled by Allstate

You'll get what you paid for. Try to make a claim, your adjuster will never respond to you within a reasonable time frame. Try to talk to a manager to complain - good luck, they put you on hold and disconnect you after 20 or 30 minutes waiting on the phone. It's a horrible experience dealing with Allstate

Auto claim

by tmj327 on May 26, 2017

Just don't even buy their product! G-d forbid you have to file a claim. I have never been treated so poorly in my whole life! I've had this insurance company for 22 years. Homeowners and auto policies. A recent wind storm damaged my classic car, so I file a claim because I can't even see out of the windshield. First I'm told just because I have insurance doesn't mean they have to fix it. What?! Then I'm called a liar because there is no way this was damaged the way I say it was. Wow, really? Just because you're a man, you think it's ok to bully a woman who is being completely honest with you about this claim. I own a classic car that I keep fully insured. So they don't want to repair it. Well, if you don't want to repair a classic car, then don't allow me to insure it. It's quite simple, I could go with another insurance company then and not have to deal with your treatment. The only other claim I filed was many years ago, and once again I was accused of lying about a break in to my home. They paid the claim (about 30% of it, that is), then continued to send me accusatory letters to be 'sure to let us know if these items magically appear'! Wow! I just can't even. If I treated people like that in my job, I would be fired immediately. But it's ok if you pay your money and don't ask for anything in return. Sounds a bit like a mafia, doesn't it?

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Terrible insurance company

by sfsfsf on Jan 5, 2017

Allstate is by far the worst (car) insurance company on the face of the earth. Not only did they take weeks to claim liability in an accident that I had no involvement with, but they also did not keep me updated throughout the process at all. My car was parked and hit by someone they insure. I never received a single phone call throughout the entire process. I had to independently call every time I wanted an update and try to speed up the process.
After finally claiming liability and I am given the okay to take my vehicle to the body shop to be repaired, the insurance adjuster decided to take 2 weeks to make his way out to the body shop and approve the additional damages the body shop found. He then called me and tried to blame the holdup on the body shop. This happened multiple times. I just recently received a phone call from the body shop stating that the adjuster ordered defective junkyard parts to use on my vehicle, rather than OEM parts that I was told would be used.
The repairs were only scheduled to take 8 days, excluding the weekend. My car has been sitting at the body shop collecting dust since 11/30/2016. Today will be the 36th day it has been there. After the final supplement was sent to Allstate, the estimated completion date was 12/31, until the adjuster took his sweet time to look over the damages and send over the defective parts.
Now to the best part. Given I would be without a car for supposedly 8 days, I accepted a rental car from a rental company I also will not name. Allstate, which they should regardless, agreed to pay for the rental until my repairs were complete. Come to find out, Allstate decided to not add an extension on the rental after 12/20 and I was partially charged by the rental company for these days. I am in no way blaming the rental company. Was I informed by Allstate that this would happen? You guessed it, I never received a single phone call or email about the non-extension. A couple of days later I was charged the full amount for the rental since the 20th, which totaled several hundred dollars. After contacting Allstate about the issue, they characteristically beat around the bush and stated that they couldn’t reopen the contract for the extension and I would have to pay the charges and be reimbursed by them for the charges. I did not even receive an apology for any of this whatsoever. If my car would be fixed within the next 11 days, which is the new time frame on the newly found damages, the total rental cost would be close to $800. Again, for a collision I had zero liability for. No one should have to pay that kind of money, let alone a student that is about to start another semester at college and has to pay for his books, car payment, car insurance, and gas. After staying in contact with the rental company, they consistently stated that Allstate was nearly impossible to reach and a hassle to deal with. The rental company told me that when they did reach Allstate, they said that I should call them every day asking for an extension. It is your responsibility to take care of the claimant. Not the other way around.
Allstate, you have been terrible throughout this entire process and I hope everyone gets the chance to hear about it. I once was insured through your company and I am glad I switched when you decided to raise my rates significantly for no apparent reason. Based on these I will also NEVER return as a customer. I will let everyone I can know of how your wronged me and hopefully push away potential customers and affect your bottom line. Because in the end that seems to be all you care about, right?
