Rate increase over 30% in Ab

by brianj on Jun 7, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

My wife's -15 rating and no accidents and no tickets and 33 years of driver experience yielded a renewal increase on her Lexus of over 30% due to start this coming July. I thought there must be an error and called. The excuse was everyone's going up and luxury cars are expensive to fix... insisting there was no error on the premium. And the young man had a real negative attitude towards customer respect. I also have a spotless record, -15 with 38 years licensed and insured. Was with Canadian Direct since they started up and got pushed over to Belair with the take over of CDI. During that transition, I got hosed for over 15%. I am currently shopping as I plan to leave these guys, 2 autos and home insurance. Retiring later this year and I feel uncomfortable that they will continue to raise rates. I do not trust Belair after this second hike in premiums.

Worst customer service. Worst Management, worst company I ever see in Canada. Please take a movement to read and know more about this company if you want to avoid high Blood pressure and save your money. DON’T believe and don’t trust those people. I had been more than six years with CDI. Unfortunately, one day they switched me to Belairdirect. They promised that everything will be the same. But that never happened. The same day they raised up the price 20% for two auto policies. When I called, they said everyone rose up. The second year the same happened: they raised them again another 20% although I never had any claim or any tickets. I walked in and discussed with one of their agent. I asked why you raise up the price without any reasons?? She answered: "We had so many claims this year and the company paid too much money to cover them". I asked: "But I didn’t get any claims or tickets. I have been with CDI. The price never rose up. On the contrary, they used to give me yearly 10% discount because I never had any accidents or tickets. Plus they gave me a lot of benefits such as: Family Protection Endorsement Comprehensive Cover - Limited Glass Accident Forgiveness (Accident rating waiver endorsement) PLUS PAC - OPTION B: Loss of Use, Legal Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Automobiles and Emergency Service Expense endorsements". She tried to push me to accept some reduction of my coverage to try to reduce the price. It is a fake way to rise up the price. After pressure, I did accept. This year is the fourth. Again. The same stupid conversation. Same question. Why you raised up the price again?? The agent answered: "We had a lot of claims, cost the company too much. And all the clients are in the same pool". I asked: "Is it fair to take money from me and give it to careless drivers and the bad drivers?" He answered: "If you need to fix a pumper, it will cost more than what you pay". I told him "this is the nature of your business like so many other insurance companies. You don’t do special things. If your owners of this company are not happy with this business, they have to shut it down". Anyway. I am so sorry if my notes big. But I wouldn’t give any quarter star but unfortunately, the minimum is one. I am looking now for another company and will leave it soon.

Rate increase

I thought my 60% increase was bad compared to some of your stories but they are just ripping everyone off. As soon as they took Canadian Direct over, things went downhill fast

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

No savings here ...

I was an automatic client due to merger with Canadian Direct & my premium increased 27% ... no changes other than Belair over the past year

I was told if I let them do a credit check I could get more discounts - Really?

Also an increase in premium following a move of a few km - still in New Westminster ...

Billing statement does not provide a breakdown of premium per item ...
I received 3 letters - all different dates & all with different premiums

To say that I was unimpressed would be a huge understatement.

Not As Advertised

by Almost Shafted on Jan 18, 2017

Belair Direct advertises that "your first claim will not affect your rates". That's not true.

My first (and only) claim. I was parked on the street. Someone backed out of a laneway, hit my car, and took off. The incident was captured on a restaurant's surveillance cameras, but we were unable to get a licence plate number from the video.

I submitted a claim to Belair Direct, and almost immediately, they responded, saying this was an "At Fault" accident. (I wasn't even in the car, so it puzzled me how I was "at fault".) But the people I spoke with were adamant, and they were quick to point out that my "rates would go up" because of this accident. (What happened to their advertised statement of "your first accident will be forgiven"??)

As it turned out, I had to go to the police reporting center so that the accident could be "evidenced" as being a "hit and run". How was I to know? I don't get into accidents on a regular basis, so I'm not instinctually familiar with the process. But once I did this, and had it submitted to Belair, I received a letter saying that my rates would not change.

The bottom line is that Belair was "gung ho" to increase my rates based on this "first accident claim". You might say I was held "guilty without jury". They had the virtual noose out before I was able to even attest to my case. I was "attacked" by this company before my situation was heard.

In my opinion, this is despicably poor treatment by an insurance company, especially given the nature of their advertisements. Given the way I was treated, their advertisement of "your first accident will be forgiven" is a total lie. I would not do business with this company given their dishonest nature.

BEWARE BELAIR

by oneP'Doffcustomer on Feb 11, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

I have been a costumer of belair direct for 1.5 years. Recently a electrical fire started in my vehicle, completely rendering my vehicle. When I first signed up with belair I was in a rush to get my policy started. The agent who sold me my policy did not clarify with me the certain coverage my policy had. Paying $2900 dollars I figured I had basic and comprehensive coverage, turns out the agent only listed me on for liability. I purchased my vehicle with a loan of $10000 and stated to the agent when I started my policy. At no point did they offer me any coverage to ensure I would be covered in any circumstances where the vehicle would be damaged or a loss. Since they do all their business over the phone, you will not see your policy package for a couple months. When they policy package came in the mail, looking over it I assumed based on what I was reading I had coverage for property damages. Turns out you really need to look at what BS they are sending you. This company is 100% a scam. All they care about is taking your money and putting it in their pockets. That's about the only thing they are good at doing. Now I am $8000 dollars in debt with no vehicle to get to and from work. Thanks Belair Direct!

Cancellation Fees

by Billy on Dec 4, 2015

Horrible.

I'm a driver with no prior accidents, no parking tickets, I put snow tires on my vehicle every year, and I also participated in their Automerit tracking program.

After a year with Belair, I was forced to move. My new apartment is 4km away from my previous apartment. My car insurance rates shot up over $700/yr. There was no way to reduce the rate.

I shopped around for a new insurance provider and spoke to a Belair rep about what was involved in cancelling. At no point was 'cancellation administrative fee' mentioned. I found a better rate with TD Insurance and called Belair to cancel. You can imagine my surprise when I was charged over $250 in cancellation fees.

It seems odd that they can change rates as they see fit, essentially changing the terms of a contract, but when I'm unhappy with this and need to find a better rate, I'm penalized yet again. I guess I would have had to stay with Belair for another year to cancel with no penalty?

They also charge an interest rate when you pay monthly. Not all insurance companies do this.

What a horrible way to treat a customer.

Belair Direct sold me insurance then called me back an hour later and doubled my premium. I had spoken with 9 different operators beforehand and every single one gave me the same insurance quote. This is the amount i paod and then after I paid in full they doubled it. Outrageous and disrespectful.

Accident Forgiveness...NOT!

by lawlessj on Nov 6, 2015
1 out of 5 stars

I recently had a claim for which I was at fault. It was my first auto insurance claim. I felt somewhat relieved that I had 'accident forgiveness' through Belair, especially considering they increased my monthly rate by $15 the year before. When I asked why, they couldn't give me a reason. When my insurance came up for renewal this year, my monthly rate increased a further $30/mo!!! I called and asked why and they told me it was because of the accident I had been in. I told them that I had accident forgiveness, so my rate shouldn't increase at all. They gave me a story that they, as a company didn't increase my premium, but because I was in an accident, my Alberta Government rating was lowered and so they had to charge me accordingly. What!? How is that 'accident forgiveness'? To make it worse, their tv commercials focus on their accident forgiveness and how you can get off 'scott free'. BS! False advertising? As soon as I can get a better rate with another company, I'm outta there!

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

STAY AWAY

I was involved in an accident where I was evidently not at fault. Sent them photos to prove it as well. Not only they condemned me to being partially at fault and destroyed my clean driving records, but after 10 years of being their royal costumer, they totally disregarded their "no premium change after first at fault accident" and increased my premium by 2.5 times.
