Don't Make Claims

by Avoid Johnson Ins. on Jun 9, 2015
2 out of 5 stars

I've paid Johnson Ins. for 10 years, I put in a claim because of a leaking roof, they patched the roof when I asked how come the whole roof isn't being done I told that it only need a patch, 8 months later my roof leaks again and they're going to do 1 whole side of my roof, It didn't need to be replaced 8 moths later it does?? and the best part now my insurance is getting canceled... They have no problem taking my money but when I need them it's a problem... Avoid them unless you know that you'll never need to make a claim.

Never insure with this company

We dealt with this company for 20 plus years. We had massive damage to our home in the 2013 Alberta floods. We were assigned an independent adjuster to process our claim. He came out to our home 3 days after we were able to access our home. He told us at that time with no information from our insurance company that we probably wouldn't be covered. The insurance company eventually advised us they would cover our basement and contents, but not the main floor. We were assigned 3 different franchises of the same restoration company over the next 7 months. The first two from Edmonton and Lloydminster (Winmar) disappeared in the middle of the clean up with no explanation. Nobody came to our home to continue the clean up for 2 months after a promise from a Johnson Inc that it would all be handled subsequent to August 21st 2013. In October Johnson sent out another Winmar clean up crew from Calgary. They took until January to perform an unsatisfactory job. We were told by the adjuster that it would take 6 weeks to have a furnace installed. We handled it ourselves and had a furnace installed in under a week. This was late December before we got a furnace. During all this delay we were unable to start the restoration of our main floor and therefore remained homeless while we watched all our neighbours return to their homes. The basement cleanup was so sloppy that we have recleaned and santized it completely ourselves. We took about 200 pounds of dried mud and 70 gallons of contaminated water from the basement to clean it thoroughly. On settling claims their intent was low ball you in every case. Comparables for our contents were taken from the cheapest suppliers they could find. They contractor they use to determine content values eventually put proper values on our belongings but not before a fight with the insurance company. We had several phone conference calls with senior management and were assured that all our problems and concerns would be dealt with promptly. They were not. The adjuster acted annoyed that the insurance company even covered us. He also took unreasonable amounts of time to deal with the claim and told us one story and the management another. Overall we eventually received a reasonable payout from the insurance company, but will not return to them because they have a group of adjusters in their home, auto, and rv insurance divisions who lack basic customer service skills: i.e. do not return phone calls and emails in a timely manner, leave on vacation without giving an alternate contact, force you to use their preferred suppliers who in some cases are more expensive than competition. We also had hail claims for our home, RV and truck. We were mailed a claim cheque from them for damage to our RV drawn on Unifund which was returned to us and charged back to our bank account. They eventually issued a new cheque with no explanation or apology whatsoever. We are paying higher premiums to go elsewhere with no regrets.

To be avoided

Johnson was my home insurance provider. When I was left homeless as the result of a fire started by a neighbour in my condo it took over three days for the company to even provide me with another copy of the policy. Unbelievably the company, after being informed of the fire, offered to send me the policy through post to an address to which I had informed them I did not have access. Numerous representatives refused to e-mail me the policy and no one bothered to inform me that there was an online portal that would provide me with access to the policy. That was the beginning of what I can only say has been a horrific experience. The adjustor I was paired with promptly left on vacation and provided no contact information for another adjustor or forewarning of this. Numerous calls to the company all resulted in being told that no one else could comment on my case even though my adjustor was unavailable. At one point I received a text message from the adjustor informing me that he did not believe that my coverage was adequate and was concerned I would not be able to reinstall cabinetry and flooring in my unit--even though this was not the case. I was provided with false and misleading information regarding my coverage and the company was evasive regarding the policy or responding to even the most trivial questions. Following this text message it took over three more days to escalate the issue and calls to lawyers to clarify the policy. In the end I have had to deal with a third party mediator to resolve the issue even though Johnson was aware from the outset that it was a total loss claim.

Johnson has caused me no end of stress and worry in an already stressful circumstance. I would strongly advise anyone looking for a home insurance provider or saving money on insurance to consider the day that you may need to call an insurance company and rely upon them to uphold your policy and provide you with the support you need in a time of hardship. My experience suggests that Johnson is not the company to look to for this support.

Dropped like a hot potato!

Bought a new (used) house, thought that Johnson were good. Had a claim due to a bad pipe, handled very fast and was really impressed, at first. Then we had a second claim due to another bad pipe. Because this was symptomatic of more problems, we had the entire house re-plumbed. Informed the company of this. Heard nothing back until it was less than a month to renewal, then we get a letter stating that we were being dropped due to frequency of claims. Were we suppose to change the entire house plumbing because of one bad pipe?? Totally bummed out with Johnson. Would not recommend them to anyone I know!!
