TD home insurance disappointing experience

by Michael Anderson on Mar 9, 2024
1 out of 5 stars

Beware if in western Canada. They assign you to a rep in Halifax. Time zone makes it difficult to connect. Incredibly poor service. They used the cheapest contractor who made things worse with their work. When I filed a complaint about the poor service they handed the complaint to the person who provided the poor service. She did not care at all. TDI does not care at all. I ended up using my own contractor to do rework.

Very poor customer care

by E. Goldfarb on Aug 9, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

I believe that TD Insurance did not fulfil its duty as my insurer. They offered me their “preferred partner”, Integricon, to manage the repairs to my house following significant damage by fallen tree limbs. That project manager sent in contractors that did the work improperly, and then denied that anything was wrong. TD Insurance has refused to use its leverage or otherwise help resolve an issue with the roof repair, saying that I have to resolve it myself with Integricon. If TD Insurance offers a “preferred” project manager, I think that they should take responsibility for resolving problems created by that party. I felt deeply disappointed by TD Insurance. I would not recommend them to anyone who values their home and their peace of mind.

Pathetic service

They claim to take the stress out of a stressful situation. They do the absolute opposite. My home insurance specialist did not even know what siding was when I explained siding blew off. Been over a month and still nothing. Communication is a joke.

Don’t buy this insurance

I had a claim. The work wasn’t done properly, but I noticed it after the warranty expired. They didn’t even want to investigate, just insisted it was done properly. It wasn’t. They should’ve investigated. I’m tired of rising premiums, but not getting what I pay for. Also, the person on the phone wasn’t very understanding.

Why is there no negative star rating?

I have had home insurance with TD for over a decade - car and home. At this time, they have increased premiums annually without any specific explanation or due to any claims made by me, on both policies.
Despite this, I have remained with TD on the assumption that the higher cost to me would be justified by a quality service if and when I do claim.
I made my first claim on both the car and home policies in May 2021.
The car claim was settled quite smoothly and within a reasonable timeframe (6 weeks); no issues there. However, the claim on the home policy has been an altogether nightmarish experience that remains ongoing!
Since making this claim...
- Two assigned claims handlers have gone AWOL without any handoff to a new handler. In both cases, they left unanswered emails and calls and I had to call the call center, as well as write to both the team manager and Complaints dept. to get someone engaged
- (I should have just taken the cash settlement but.... ) I opted to go with the TD-appointed Contractor to carry out the repairs on the assumption that TD has vetted the contractor to ensure reliability and integrity. I also did not want to be managing the repairs and finding my own contractors.
What a mistake!! As yet (12+ months later) the contractor has not completed the work and my claim remains open with TD
- The contractor has sent in subcontractors with a poorly defined scope of work on multiple occasions. One team left my property further damaged and showed little respect for my home and did not respect any Covid protocols (they showed up with 5-6 men to do work in a relatively enclosed space in my home and did not wear masks). Pure negligence (not covering the hardwood floor) that resulted in new damage to my house
- I fired these subcontractors and I am still waiting on compensation from the first subcontractor that they agreed to pay in April 2022 for the extra damage. I have chased them 3 times on this and they simply say they will contact their "head office" and let me know. TD has done nothing to assist on this other than send an email asking them to update me on the status of the compensation
- Despite assigning a PM and Coordinator to manage the repairs, they have failed to properly coordinate the job and failed to even properly inspect a damaged window opening before approving the replacement window to be installed. They are now blaming the window installer for this but the project coordinator was on site when the Window went in. This lack of planning and foresight has delayed the work by many months.
- Following my complaint to TD, the claims team manager is personally handling the claim. As I said, they have done little to resolve the issues (to my knowledge) other than initially trying to defend the complete lack of customer care and unexplained absence by their own team members and sending the odd email to the subcontractor.
- In the interim, they have gone ahead and increased my premium so I have the privilege of paying, even more, $$ to them while this mess continues at my home.
- I'm in the unenviable position of having to pay TD and cant even switch insurers due to the claim remaining open!

Paying out

by ArsonCase on Feb 5, 2020

They miscommunicated that we wanted the restoration companies to clean everything, ended up paying over $12,000 out of pocket for the accidental restoration of broken/non-fitting items. Wouldn’t get callbacks for WEEKS, dealt with over 30 people trying to get things fixed or done. Went through three main adjusters, one let go for incompetence, another had a job change in the middle and the last wrote off all usable clothing instead of provided list I made myself of actual losses. I lost all of my sentimental things that were fine due to this with an unreasonable (CRDN) company. DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM. Sold us a policy when I asked for $50,000 EXTRA coverage for jewellery ok top of the $79,000 content, they charged me $200 more (on top of $400, 50% more) and made $50,000 out of $79,000 for jewellery. Lost so much due to this clerical error but they would not take responsibility. After a review of the call, they admitted it was a miscommunication on their end but did not fix it. I called for another quote and they told me the same thing! Tried to sell me the same package with incorrect info! I have recordings of all of the misinformation from CRDN and TD and intend on getting some money back from CRDN. Two companies mistakes I had to pay for. Please do not deal with these guys!

Do not use TD Insurance

by Leaving TD Insurance on Nov 19, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Had a basement leak. They were fantastic to send somebody out that night to help get cleaned. Now the horrific truth!! The restoration company does nothing after the first night, leaves their equipment until convenient for them to pick it up, but charges you a daily rate. Meanwhile, TD mentioned nothing about any charge, which for us was almost $2,000. Three weeks later after doing nothing past the first night but charging you, we get a letter from TD Insurance that the damage is not covered and their file is closed. Don't understand how they came to this conclusion because they did nothing. We hired contractors on our own that are working on identifying the leak. TD Insurance nor their restoration company do anything to help figure out the problem - bad enough they are useless after the first night, worse that they kick you onto the streets on your own after they have happily taken our premium payments for 18 years, and never had any other claim. Best advice - don't use TD Insurance and find a company that is reliable and is not in the business of just money collecting, but rather provides a service for what you pay for!!

Worse customer protection

by frustrated with TD on Sep 15, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

to explained in simple term "they do not care" there is no common sense or sense of urgency with TD insurance, even lives are in danger there are no action, you are left suspended, believe me when I say i have called on a daily bases for 2 weeks, TD takes the call but refers to a manager who is not available nor does she call back.
Mother nature wrecked havoc on my house 3 years ago, a large tree on my property was hit by a powerful lightening causing a 15 feet burn on side of the tree, there were also a lot of debris scattered 50 feet into the road, some exterior damages as well as interior damage, electrical switches blown to pieces and smell of wire burning when we arrived home that night, we had no idea what has happened till later from neighbors, we called the insurance company, an arborist and an electrician were sent who disconnected and replaced some electrical switches. we were told by the insurance adjuster that the tree was fine, so they could not help us any further, we started having all kinds of issues with the electrical lines and lost few appliances there after, now tree is completely dead and a large piece has fallen without notice, luckily it did not cause major damages, over 2 weeks and no news, manager will call back .......they promised you know!!!

Unreasonable Money Grabbers

by Winnie Lapp Ottawa Ontario on Apr 29, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

I have just cancelled all policies with this company. I had four properties and a tenant package insured with this firm. I also had four automobiles insured with them. There was one claim on a property caused by a tenant who flooded the ceiling in the apartment below. This is the only claim in approx. five years of coverage. During this claim I had to do the emergency work myself as this occurred on a weekend. Once the adjuster did come he was very friendly and quite fine to deal with. However, the damaged caused to the apartment below consisted of a collapsed ceiling kitchen and floor damage which made the apartment unlivable. The contractor was unavailable for 3 months. I had to do the work myself. Next point is that my policy went from $1800.00 per year to almost $7000.00 . There should be a law against this as they are bandits.I am a retired Police Officer and many inmates are far more honest than these people. I cancelled my insurance and had to pay a substantial fee. The co-Operators insurance saved me over $3000.00 and were happy to get my business. This was on just one property. They also cancelled my cottage insurance and tried to charge me a fee to cancel although they were cancelling the policies as they would not insure the cottage without the home, they were charging over $3000.00 a year more for . Insurance companies are out of hand.Their profits are enormous. The consumers need some protection against this behaviour . Politicians talk the talk but really do nothing to help they are just a lip service for these white shirt thieves.
