I feel that I was given false information which affected my decision regarding a claim. I had a claim which was comprehensive. The representative advised me that it would be a bad decision to put it through insurance as rates would increase and the claim wasn't worth putting through. I trusted them and didn't put through the claim and drove around with over $1200 damage to rear end as I couldn't afford to fix out of pocket. When I switched insurance companies, I was advised that they should not have advised that and my rate would not have increased.

CLAIM FOR HOME FLOOD

by SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED on Apr 5, 2021
1 out of 5 stars

I had a flood in my home on March 14th. Called in was told this is a Sun so no one can help me until Monday. Was never asked about my family nor myself having anywhere to go. Monday phone again was told to send in pics and file out claims sheets. Did as I was told. Still not no concern. Had no stove. All appliances were damaged, asked about meals was told they cover 75% of meals and I would have had to buy grocery anyways and not to go overboard with ordering food (nice eh). When I finally got a settlement, I was given not even half of what my claims was for and told they are not just going to give me money as I may not replace all the things. So they will give me this money and if I spend more they may see about giving me the difference. This is my second claim in 22 years. If I could financially afford to pull my policy with these people I would in a heart beat. The flood was disheartening enough without this bull. If I could give them any lower rating, trust me I would.

12 years, 0 claims, ripped off

by UnCooperator on Mar 27, 2021
1 out of 5 stars

After 12 years with Cooperators with 0 claims, I got a renewal policy with a 40% increase on my home policy and a 30% increase in my auto policy. Attempts to negotiate reasonable rates with them did not work and of course, other insurance companies did offer more competitive rates.
Called to cancel 1 day late and they are charging me an obscene termination fee of $510 dollars.
After spending 45 minutes on the phone they couldn't provide me with the information of how the cancellation fee is calculated and it is not stated in the policy document either under the cancellation section so very very shady practice to put it in mild words.
I honestly would have expected a bit more sympathy after 12 years with zero claims.
From my perspective, they really don't care about you as a customer and will rip you off at the smallest chance available.
I cannot imagine what would have happened if I had had a claim.
I would stay away from this company.

Farm policy 20% rate increase

by Robert on Mar 1, 2021
3.5 out of 5 stars

I don't know what to think. I have had a farm policy with Co-Operators for years with no claims, or changes. I renewed my policy for 2021 and noticed it had a 20% increase with no explanation. I can find nothing online to support this, most sites suggest 2-3% as to be expected. I wonder if the rate increase was supposed to be calculated at 1.02 % and the girl made an error of 1.20 %. Easy mistake, but her dad owns the brokerage and, well, I'm at a loss as to find the answer. Yes, I will be looking around. If I find what I expect to, I will be taking multiple policies with me.

Unjust penalty $288

by honestjohn on Oct 15, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

My home insurance was automatically renewed without notice. I called to inquire about my home insurance a week after it had already been renewed. I informed the representative that for a better policy another insurance company had offered $800 less than what the Cooperators had renewed my Policy for. He told me that the Cooperators had many claims the previous year and so as a community insurance company prices increase for all their customers. It is important to note that I had made no claims ever. So I told him seeing that I had not notified of the renewal and since it had only been a week since the policy renewed that I wanted to cancel it because an $800 difference was way too much for me to absorb. I was then told that I would have to pay a penalty of $288. I found this amount unjust. I would have understood a nominal fee but not $288 for 1 week of insurance. I am happy to say that I left the Cooperators for another insurer and I am not looking back.

2 months later...

We put in a claim 2 months and despite many calls and emails, we have not yet had this claim resolved. I guess it’s true what they say, insurance is only until you need to use it. We have been excellent clients for the Cooperators for 10 years + and not have not in a claim before. This is how they treat their clients? What are we paying hundreds of dollars for certainly not service! NOT impressed with Cooperators Insurance!

Not worth the lower prices

We are currently with Cooperators for Home and Auto. We had an auto claim and they were decent to deal with but didn't give us a fair value for our car (which they claim was totaled). Our main gripe is home insurance. We went with them because they were the cheapest when bundling - big mistake! We bought a house a month ago, and we're still dealing with Cooperators demands. First, they tried to get us to do a bunch of complex paperwork because we had a wood-burning fireplace - turns out the agent thought we said stove, and we only needed a WETT inspection (which we had). Now, they want every minor comment from the home inspection fixed within 30 days or they will cancel our policy. Not actual risks mind you, but things the inspector mentioned we could do in the report over several years. Their agent keeps emailing and calling us to check in on our progress and is very condescending. Worst of all, after we've done the work, they don't trust us when we tell them we've done it. If it didn't cost an arm and a leg to switch, we would have by now.

NOT the insurer for you

by Cooperatorsisrobbingus on Sep 24, 2020

We were recently transitioned from Coseco to Cooperators and our home and auto went up by an average of 23%. In addition, they saw fit to add water coverage we never had before - initially raising our home coverage cost by 328% - without asking. I asked for a "reduced" water coverage (which is what we previously had) and they simply don't offer it - all or nothing with a BIGGER COMPANY. By acquiring a smaller company they have increased our rates by 23%, reduced product offerings - and wait times to phone their 800 number are triple what they were with Coseco. We have been with Coseco for nearly 20 years - claim-free - and 2 weeks with Cooperators is 2 weeks too long. We'll be switching.

Terrible Customer Service

by Jess on Aug 7, 2020
1 out of 5 stars

During the Covid-19 lockdown, we were sent a letter stating that our premiums would remain in effect until after the lockdown because of the pandemic. So we assumed that our coverage was extended through the pandemic. We called today to find out that our home insurance was actually cancelled in the middle of the pandemic without us knowing. They asked if we did not receive an email (we didn’t). As we tried to renew our insurance, the customer service representative said it was time to close as it was 5 pm and we would receive the quote on Monday instead. I would have been okay with waiting but the time was actually 4.55 pm. In my case, I would have been alright with her just saying they would find a new quote by Monday but claiming they were closed was almost like saying they don’t care about my insurance needs. I used to be with another insurer and they treated us much better than this. Any insurance company that cannot make their customer feel valued is not one I feel comfortable with.

wrong calculation

I renewed my apartment insurance, an agent gave me the price for the year, I paid in full the same day. A month later I get letter says I owe money, I called and they said: "oh, that is a form letter so I don't actually owe that money". Then the agent checks my account and comes back with: "well, you do still owe money as the amount you paid for year was calculated wrong so you actually owe..." I felt this was not my error, and how many other people had this happen to? I spoke with a supervisor she just said: "well, it was a human error"... I said - if I hadn't called I would never have known! She said eventually they would have audited and I would have been notified, I asked: "when do they audit?" She said she couldn't tell me. Will be changing my company next renewal...I would now but can't cancel without $ penalty. So, for this company, they are pleasant when taking your money but not so when the error is theirs. Buyer beware!
