Raised my rates over 12%

by govinsurance on Apr 13, 2018
1 out of 5 stars

They raised my rates in one year with no valid reason. I have no tickets or claims in the last 20 years. Here was their response when I asked why. Insurance cost has been increasing due to the fact that Private Passenger Vehicle claims continue to rise significantly across Canada. This trend has been driven in part by higher repair costs due to various factors including the complexity of modern vehicles, increases in bodily injury settlements and more frequent losses as a result of distracted driving. Never mind they made 12 percent profit on a billion dollars last year.

Increase in premium

by Maame on Jun 7, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

I had a very bad experience with Intact insurance. I bought the insurance and my premium was 253/mth. After a year, I did not receive any documentation. I checked my bank account and Intact had debited my account for an amount of 350. I called the broker who then said they renewed the insurance automatically and my premium had gone up by almost 50%. That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I had no driving issues throughout the year, no tickets, the police had never pulled me over but my premium has increased.FLEE FROM INTACT INSURANCE!!!

Telematic devices

by GOGO on May 19, 2017
1 out of 5 stars

Was with Intact MDD my driving discount. If you are not aware (and they do not disclose that, ever) that every hard braking event HBE in the beginning of the program will bring down your potential discount with 1%, every HBE. They DO NOT WANT to answer how the device actually works!!! Quote from FSCO "Specific details on the algorithms used by the insurer would be considered confidential/proprietary information. These mathematical algorithms are quite complex and are not available to the public." Meaning we are stupid and it is a secret!!! I drove 8000 km, over 200 days, with 10 HBE (average 0.125 per 100 km) and the discount reached 23%, out of 25%. In addition, only 1 acceleration, 0 driving at high-risk times. How the algorithm works: The less km driven, even 1 HBE will reduce %. The higher km driven is harder to bring % up to the max and after a certain point, you can not. I am the example. Rules for whoever wants to achieve the maximum! In the beginning (consider at least 100 km, but I would target 500 km driven) you have to drive as a retard!!! Depending on speed, at least 4 cars length distance from the car in front of you!!! Watch for "might cut you off" and decrease speed, leave space for them! Red light approaching, be ready to stop, not go through!!! Adjust speed to do so, at any time!!! Actually, this was the best habit I can take away from the program, changing the prospective... And remember, the more km you drive WITHOUT ANY HBE, the more you could afford to do 'till the end of the program!!! Next, 14kmh per second decrease of speed is = if you drive with 70kmh is 5 seconds. Shorter than that will trigger HBE. Imagine you have on the dashboard a full cup of coffee without a lid, try not to spill it!!! Just FYI 14kmhs equals 3.8889 meters per second. Be gentle on the brake pedal! Most automatic cars will help stopping the car additionally with up gear of the engine as well, meaning you have to release the foot pressure you are applying towards the full stop of the car. Practice before you plug the device! No one is ready to drive like an idiot by default!!! And remember, the HBE is the most detrimental to the % kept!!! Neither accelerations nor hours have such an effect!! And just a question as food for thought... For premium purposes, your postal code is the base for the insurance company to evaluate the RISK (based on the data of claims in your area) BUT for the device, EVERYONЕ is equal, meaning, the algorithm of all devices are the same. That means, that if you pay higher premium because you are in HIGH-RISK area/postal code, your chances of getting/keeping higher discount IS LESS because you drive in HIGHER RISK area/postal code. Complaining to FSCO (which I did) will not help you because they approve of WHAT insurance companies suggest as a program and parameters, BUT NOT HOW it actually works!!! So, the potential of gaining/receiving a higher discount on your rate is there, but you have to educate and prepare yourself for it if you decide to "voluntarily participate" in those programs!! Good luck!!!

Cancellation without Notice

by dejay99 on May 29, 2015

For many years I insured two antique automobiles with Intact. In 2008 they requested appraisals, which were done. The cars remained in storage without being driven since that time. A few days ago I was looking for the current pink cards/policy and was unable to find them. I phoned their agent, Brokerlink, in Edmonton to request a replacement. I was first advised that the policy had lapsed because I had not paid the invoice. I indicated that I had not received the invoice nor any indication of overdue payment. I was then advised that Intact had cancelled the policy because I had not gotten a new appraisal after 5 years. I was never advised that I had to have another appraisal done after 5 years. In spite of having my address, phone number, and email address neither Intact or Brokerlink saw fit to advise me in advance that my policy would not be renewed, and consequently I was left without insurance. Their behavior was totally and absolutely UNPROFESSIONAL. I am appalled that they would treat a long term customer who never had a claim in this fashion.

Unjustified rate increases !

My rates kept rising every year, with no claims. After 5 years of getting ripped off, I decided to switch to another insurance company. I had both, auto and home policies. Save your money, do the same !

Awful Company

by Unhappy on Dec 28, 2013
1 out of 5 stars

Every partial payment notice comes with a different due date. In one, they tell me my next payment will be January 24th...then send a 'reminder' notice that my upcoming payment is due January 2nd. Awful customer service... terrible options to change anything. They are not looking out for the customer... but only for their own bottom line. Do yourself a favor and shop around for cheaper rates...because I GUARANTEE you INTACT INSURANCE will slowly creep their rates up without any notice or explanation.

They are pretty quick to let you know if you are a day late with a payment... and NEVER will send you a Thank You if you make a payment early. Give your money to a company that will care about you and your situation. I hear the Co-Operators is very customer service oriented. Actually, ANY other company would be a better choice. I am done with this insurance company when my plan ends... they will also lose any business from my children who will be driving in the next two years. I would give you a zero star rating if I could. Good riddance INTACT!
