Get Their Facts

I was hit in a roundabout (low impact, front corner fender bent, not my fault). Intact over-estimated the repair, and undervalued the car (2005 Prius), to force a write-off on minor damage. Intact's estimate to repair was $1700 more than a competitive estimate to repair, by another certified insurance estimator. Intact refused to recognize the lower estimate. Both estimators confirmed the car was repairable. Intact insisted on writing my car off. I insisted on getting the basis of their evaluation of my car's value before I would sign my car over to them. All six quotes they had averaged were invalid: the cars had much more mileage (100,000 km more than mine), and/or were different years, and/or were not in the same area (one was over 500km away), sold more than 60 days previously, and prices had all been reduced by 8% than the asking prices for "presumed negotiation reduction" which had not happened. I know, because one quote was my own purchase of my own car a few months earlier (I had paid the asking price), and I called the rest of the contacts directly. As soon as Intact made their first write-off offer, they cancelled my rental car. Pushing back on their under-evaluation resulted in Intact increasing their payback to me by $1000 after 5 weeks of emails and phone calls. 9 months later my "written-off" car was found posted for sale again online, with a CLEAN accident report. Do not deal with this company. And do not trust clean accident reports when buying used cars.

Intact scam

A truck backed into me a month ago. I am insured two ways, so covered in the event of any collision. I was deemed 0% responsible for the accident - had my car deemed a total loss, then told I could not have a rental car as the fine print on the contract (which is nowhere on the client's contract by the way) states that as of the day they give you their (lowball) offer on your total loss vehicle, they no longer cover car rental fees. I was able to drive my car after the accident and did so until they told me that in order to prepare the check for the total loss, they had to be in possession of my car. So I had to let them tow away my car - with no rental and a wait to get my check. HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO SHOP AROUND FOR ANOTHER CAR WITH NO RENTAL AND NO CHECK?? I pay for the F.A.Q 21a, which is supposed to cover my replacement fees (rental etc.) for up to 2125$ or 75$ a day. They refuse to honour my contract based on fine print details that I do not have anywhere on my contract. Did I mention that I was insured both ways and deemed 0% responsible for my accident? These guys are warped...

Fraudulent, can't be trusted

I was in a car accident Dec 2017, a truck hit me, not much damage to my car back fender, side panel buckle, my navi radio screen blink off and on then it didn't work. My injuries: rotator cuff ripped at 80% right arm, whiplash to my back and neck, severe vertigo. My car went to the auto body shop, which I was told it was still driveable. After the accident, I had electrical issues with the car, the headlights, high beams, the radio would come on or off periodically, my car turned off on its own. Obviously, I had electrical issues, my car was serviced the day before and nothing was noted with having issues. Intact called the dealership for them to look at my car. Codes came up and I was told to talk to my insurance, no one told me the codes. The dealership, they are getting paid by the insurance and they work for the insurance that I need to talk to them. Intact told me it wasn't accident-related. Finally, I talk to a lawyer friend of mine who said to me: call insurance now, your car is unsafe to drive. Prior to many conversations with Intact, they wouldn't put me in a rental. Finally, after the talk with the lawyer, they got me in a rental within 15 mins. The auto body shop did a partial tear down, they couldn't say for sure if it was accident-related or not but said if the customer comes in and says this is what happened, then they feel as that is what happened. Then the auto body shop told me that my car was unsafe to drive and they wouldn't drive it either, so the car sat at the auto body shop for a couple more weeks. Intact said if the auto body shop said it could be the cause, they would write my car off. They didn't keep to their word, Intact sent me an email saying that I had 24 hrs to agree on getting the bumper fixed and also agreeing to get the bumper fixed. I am also agreeing the electrical is not caused by the accident. I wouldn't agree to this, 'cause if I have electrical problems and this car is unsafe to drive, I could cause an accident or even kill someone, I don't want that burden. I wouldn't agree to that, so Intact told me to take the car back to the car rental place and which I did, I still had 5-6 wks of car rental left and they would let me use it. Intact also wasn't rushing me to get medical health, the adjuster said to me that I could walk to physio. It was approx 2 km walk, I have severe health issues and have a handicap permit, I am on heavy pain medication and told him I can barely walk a few feet. He would still argue with me on why I couldn't walk, meanwhile, it was the middle of winter and the weather was approx -17 -20. I always have high blood pressure and asthma. It took a month for Intact to take me out of minor injury, I finally got into the second one and I received a letter last week stating I have no housekeeping, no benefits now my injuries are back to minor. Through the accident I am unable to clean and look after my house, I live alone, I'm almost at the point of being homeless I am just on a fixed income on a long-term disability. I wouldn't suggest Intact to anyone. This has been a nightmare for me, they don't care about their clients. 9 months I have been fighting with them, 9 months of not receiving anything from them, 9 months of not getting paid out on my car. What kind of insurance company does this? Why wouldn't they help? Why would they want me to suffer ? My life has been hell! Because of Intact I would have never thought this kind of thing happens in Canada

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

I currently have insurance with them but am looking for another company. My husband had an accident and they messed up when sending me the cheque for my car but guess what, I have no vehicle right now but the rental one and it has to go back without having the money to get a new car. What kind of insurance company leaves their clients stranded after they messed up. DON'T DEAL WITH THIS INSURANCE COMPANY.

Write off claim

by taytay on Aug 4, 2017

Was the third party of a claim where a cube van driver popped the front bumper of my 2008 Mazda 3 off. After waiting 2 weeks to have it towed to impacts assessment lot, they finally call me 3 days after having it at their location to tell me that the damages to my car are 3000$. She tried to tell me that my car is worth 4000 when I just looked up its black book value at around 6000, as well as aluminum alloy rims on it. They now are giving me the option of taking 4000$ for a 6250$ car or taking it back with maybe 2000 for repairs and a rebuilt status (meaning it has been rebuilt from ground up) even without structural damages. I purchased this car no more than 2 months ago and now have to get it ripped away from me. After this experience I can never suggest Intact auto insurance to another being. I was also talked to with a very demining tone. Worst insurance experience possible and I've only been with them for 3 months. I have been without a car for 2 and half weeks now and they have not offered a rental. I will be glad to be taking my money elsewhere and hope most, if not all, of you do as well, cheers.

Worst claim experience ever

by Shawn. on Jul 25, 2017

My adjuster name is Heather. My car was involved in an 8 car m.v.a (moderator note: Multi-Vehicle Accident). I was the last car. I have a policy on my 5 month old brand new Chevy Malibu 2017 premier model worth 45 thousand. My adjuster has stalled the process and I am now without a rental and owe 386.00. She has put my claim for investigation on the 28th day into claim because I haven’t updated my address to 2 blocks where I am staying in tiny township. I bought the car in Hamilton and bought window tint and rims tires in Hamilton and thus making her suspicious of my address. I have stated that I have a family I stay with on days I’m seeing my daughter so now I must wait longer and possibly loose my job as I can’t meet my carpool rides to work. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with insurance. I would do whatever it takes to avoid intact insurance. They will leave you stranded and care more about not paying your claim than they do about investigating fault as I have not been notified of fault yet as well my accident was June 28th. It is now July 25th and I have no transportation. They never notified me of rental return date and wouldn’t return rental company’s phone calls. Very hard to get in touch with managers and adjuster. Today she notified rental that it was due back leaving me in the hole 380 plus tax. Great, thanks alot.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Very poor customer service.

Extremely poor claim experience. It has been 1 month that I have been without a vehicle or the settlement agreed upon. Managers do not return your calls or messages which adds to the frustration. The replacement vehicle that I found may well not be available much longer because of the delays. The fact that I am disabled and have a daughter with a small child requiring transportation does not matter to this company. I strongly suggest that you consider another company for your insurance needs.

Life Ruining Company

by CarLessJoe on Dec 19, 2016

Wow where to start.

I went via a broker. I was given Intact as a suitable option for my Sedan. I was told I was covered for every eventuality imaginable, (including first accident forgiveness) - So it sounded like a dream come true so i decided to move my other car, an SUV and my home insurance policy to them also.

This was in Feb 2016. In May 2016, when i had an "at fault accident" (Which, wasn't even my fault, I was directed by construction workers who were blocking the entrance to my lane, and following their hand signals, i slightly scraped the side of my car on an invisible concrete bollard which nobody could see either in mirrors or blind spots)

So, i called Intact to ask if i should claim or not, and they insisted i did. They seemed so caring at the time. They insisted i used their recommended body shop, they insisted they give me a top of the range courtesy car whilst they "repaired" mine. Their "body shop" insisted that i needed a new Passenger front car door (i clearly didn't, it was only a scratch - but i went with it) i trusted them again. The new car door apparently cost almost $5000 (yet, i can almost guarantee that any other body shop would have repaired it for not even a fraction of that cost, and there was no need to replace it)

Everything seemed to be fine and months and months later (December) I got a letter from my broker saying Intact had refused to renew my policy, as i had an "At Fault Accident within my first 4 years". At this stage, i queried the "First Accident Forgiveness " that I had thought i had, but they said i didn't qualify for it for not being insured with them for over 4 years!! I then asked why it was mentioned in the phone call to the broker, and they said I had to prove it. I said, well since you record all phone calls, i suggest you pull the call and listen... but they refused saying it was my fault because i didn't read the "small print" of my policy. I begged and begged them, but they simply said no.

I am now in a position where i will lose both of my cars as I cant afford a new company that my broker found, the payments to Insure the cars are now 3 times more than the payments FOR THE CARS. So, I am going to lose my cars, and in tern, my job, so potentially, i am going to lose my home.... all because they conned me into making a claim on a feature that i did not qualify for in the first place!!

Oh - and to add insult to injury, we took part in the driving Discount program and had devices installed into both cars, I qualified for a 16% discount, my other half 18% discount due to "good driving" - however, it was totally pointless, they refused to renew so YOU LOSE THE WHOLE LOT!!

I am disgusted with Intact and advise everyone to stay well clear of them. They are the cowboys of the industry and are ruining peoples lives. I hate to think how many people they have put into the situation i am in. Car less, Job Less, and soon to be homeless. All at Christmas time too! Thanks Intact. You must feel so proud of your despicable selves.

Wrote off new truck, a scratch

by Jake on Dec 5, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

I bought a new vehicle with 100 thousand kms on it. 2005 GMC jimmy, body and interior were flawless. My vehicle was broken into, so I put an insurance claim through since I was paying full coverage and only had the vehicle 2 months. There's was a broken door handle and scratches above the handle so I asked it to be fixed... I priced it out myself at $850 plus labour. So, here's how they dealt with me... 1. Said they will be by in the next 48 hours to pick it up out front my house. I work, they said they are unable to arrange a time, to just leave the keys in it unlocked on the road for 48 hours, where it was just broken into. 2. They pick it up after 2 days take it to Carstar, where it gets locked in a gated yard. They say they will contact me to get my belongings if they decide to write it off. They never called, I almost lost everything in my vehicle due to it. 3. They deemed my vehicle a total loss over a door. This means I can no longer fix it and out it on the road under any circumstance. The truck with 100k on the motor is now scrap. 4. THEN I call leave a note with my claim broker to call back about what I get back for my vehicle since I currently don't have one due to them. This was on a Wednesday; no call so try again Friday with another message... No call. They leave me with no knowledge of my payout, when I get it, no vehicle to get to work, or any way to get another vehicle because I must pay out my loan first which is waiting on the insurance company. 5. After all said and done they priced my buyout at $3000 less than I had paid 2 months prior while not checking the odometer to realise how low it is the left me owing almost $5000 with interest for a vehicle I was paying full insurance for an had been broken into and deemed "not my fault". This company screwed my life over for more than a year to come and put my job at jeopardy due to me not having a way to commute. To top it off I called and stated all this to them and they didn't even have an apology, they just said these are our policies and that their mechanic who wrote it off was a trained professional. Please save yourself the hassle and money.

Frustrated!!!!!

After reading numerous reviews, I see many others have had the same complaint. Very difficult to speak to the same person, they do not call back after leaving numerous messages, conflicting reports and messages, promised a rental care, when I had to leave car at a garage for hail damage assessment there was no rental car there for me but I was told there would be-we do have coverage for rental, they deleted photos of damage, had to go back again! No one seems to take action on the claims, have two vehicles with hail damage, have been a client for 17 years with no claims, terrible experience dealing with this first claim! We will be leaving this company once settlement is completed if I ever get a return call! Waiting for answers, promised in an email we would hear within two business days, it has been 29 days and still waiting!!! Do not sign on with Intact. A no action company!!!!! Terrible service!
