Car Insurance Increased by 9%

by PaulB on Sep 13, 2020
2 out of 5 stars

My Albertan Car Insurance renewal premium increased by 9% for 2020-2021 - this when I had no claims in 2019 (minor one in 2018), plus I recently retired (so no driving to work), plus my wife (retired nurse) and I are now on a fixed pensionable income), plus I changed from high risk, downtown condo address with monthly break-ins to a garaged, suburban residential address - and all this when Alberta has suffered severe economic downturn due to collapse in oil price, plus COVID/pandemic economic hardship and massive job losses across Canada... So despite this, my car insurance premium INCREASED by 9%. I phoned to query and wasn't given a satisfactory explanation or justification. I will definitely move insurance companies. Price gouging for seniors nor appreciated.

Rates went up 50% in two years

My car insurance rates virtually doubled in the two years I have had my current car. No claims, no accidents, no changes to my policy. Phoned to discuss and they admitted that they had gone up a lot but hoped they would level off in the next few years. Unbelievable!!

Sleazy and mediocre service

I too had been with Belair for several years and was shocked when I received my renewal which was more than $200 a year more than what I had paid the previous year, in spite of having had no accidents and no claims. The agent explained that this had nothing to do with the calculation of my new premium. I found this absurd and was told that the price hike was due to increased costs and inflation, blah blah blah. I decided to go with a group insurer here in Québec that offered me a similar plan at a much lower price with warm, intelligent people providing the service. The sleaziest bit was a month after I cancelled, 122$ was debited out of my account because of the ''valeur à neuf'' insurance I had agreed to when getting my plan. The agent told me I could cancel it at any time. He didn't tell me that by cancelling early I would be forced to pay the remaining amount on the contract. I had no idea it was a contract. I thought it was just part of my insurance policy. I am a very understanding person, but this company pissed me off.

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Outrageous quotes

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with an agent with what seemed like a very competitive quote. In the end, when we were about to proceed with payment, he said the quote went up from $1200/year to $2700/year!!!! This was because I moved abroad for two years and so was not insured, and they told me I had to start over as a new driver. I have a perfectly clean record for over 10 years with no claims whatsoever. I can't believe they penalize people for having a life. Outrageous. I found another great company that stuck to the $1200 a year and even they couldn't believe it when I told them!

BelAir Increased premiums

by Carmom on Sep 22, 2017

Upon renewal my policy went from 69$ to over 90$ /mo.
I have no accident or claims history. Was with CDI since new vehicle was bought. Car was 23k, now less than 5k, why are my premiums higher than when it was brand new, and I was younger, less experienced? I have no demerits.
The agent told me premiums have increased for all drivers becauae of an increase in claims in "my category" last year? What category is that? The one where responsible drivers dont have any claims? Nonsense. I believe this is a result if their acquiring CDI and not having automatic consent to pull my credit bureau upon renewal. My credit history has no bearing on my driving. Ive always paid my insurance.
I requested to have a full accounting of exactly why my insurance increased to $90/mo.
The agent said she would see what she could do about that, no guarantee of return call, email or written explanation.
I will not be renewing with Belair.
