Terrible customer service; so many careless mistakes

The absolute worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Currently dealing with a basement flood claim and they have been horrendous and left my newly built house in complete shambles.

Worse experience after 40 years insured.

by Juanita & Austin Langdon on Jul 13, 2022
1.7 out of 5 stars

After water got into the basement of our rental intact gave us a small sum of money which cleaned up the basement with no replacements. Installed two pumps, did new electrical and kept heat of the floor just left the concrete basement. Now the issue is they increased the insurance to $3500 four years ago we paid $1437 I find as seniors we live in our cottage and rent out our property in town bought for an investment and tenants destroyed not cover we are out thousands of dollars had to go get a loan to cover the rebuild. Intact is pretty much-holding clients hostage you can't go elsewhere and this gouging is unacceptable. Given many have insurance and rebuilding cost millions such a small amount comes back to them in a couple of years. Worse experience ever...

Very happy experience

We had a water line break in our basement so I called my local agent. They connected me to an Intact agent and they had a crew over within a few hours. The agent (Jenna) that helped us with our claim was fantastic! She followed up regularly. We were reimbursed promptly for the initial plumbing repairs to our water line break. No complaints from this customer!

Water damage claim.

I had a sink water supply line burst on October 5th, 2019. Despite being home at the time and catching it fairly quickly, the water ran down through the main floor below and then into the basement. After dealing with the emergency, walls were opened up and dried for about a week. We continued living in our home (family of 4) with only 1 working bathroom until Dec 1st when we moved out to a local hotel for 7 weeks. I had a local restoration company deal with the emergency and demo and then I took the "payout" option to hire my own contractors to put everything back together. I was very happy with Intact and my claims representative was fantastic. I recommend patience initially as it takes time for everything to get sorted out. Once things got going, it went very smoothly. I also recommend paying a bit extra in your policy to have "Claims Advantage" which protects your first claim from increases. Glad we had that!

Quick to cancel policy

While I would have rated Intact higher on customer service for the people who I actually worked with while processing a claim, their follow-up dismissal of me as a client after only one processed claim and refusal to work with me to maintain my status as their client is ridiculous. As new homeowners, we called our insurance provider, at the time Intact, to ask for advice on our policy after finding water in the basement. After speaking with the Intact personnel, and discovering that the claim was not eligible we did not process one. Due to their system of automatically opening a claim we officially "withdrew the claim" within 1 hour of opening it. We then fixed the water issue out of pocket to avoid future issues. One year later we received a letter that Intact was cancelling our policy for multiple claims within a three year period, even though they acknowledged that we only actually processed one claim. When we tried to work with the company by informing them that we had fixed the issue out of pocket within one month of getting their dismissal letter (and hadn't had time yet to inform them of the upgrade) they still refused to keep us as clients. Due to the dismissal of an insurance company against us, we are now paying for alternative insurance at a higher rate as a penalty. Intact never reached out to us and wouldn't work with us on how to maintain our client status and although we paid much more for their service than we ever received in the one claim, they removed us with very little notice. Would never recommend Intact insurance.

Very difficult to deal with.

We had tenants insurance through Intact. Our basement suite flooded, and Intact was very quick to respond at first. They walked us through every process and packed up our things in a timely matter. HOWEVER, they lost some of our valuables and broke our 55” Samsung smart television upon moving back in. They offered us $500 compensation for the TV which we declined as we just wanted them to replace it. Once we refused to accept the $500, they stopped answering our calls and refused to negotiate. We haven’t heard anything back about our lost and damaged items and every time we try, the person on the other end says “They can’t do anything.” Save yourself the stress and worry and go with an insurance company that actually helps its' customers in times of need.

Intact to the Rescue

We had water damage in our basement and with all the bad publicity many insurance companies get weren't sure if we could get it satisfactorily resolved.

We found to our delight Intact was more than fair. Way to go Matthew who showed up at our door within 1 hour of our call and had our claim resolved within 24 hours!

Please note that our original contact was with another agent who went on vacation but handed the file to Matthew who did a great job for us!

Flood of July 2013

by tigge811 on Mar 4, 2016

Living in the Toronto area my parent's basement was flooded. We contacted Intact Ins. and they opened a case right away. It took them 5 months before they offered my parents any sort of compensation. They could not get a contractor to the house to clean up the sewer backup so the basement remained flooded for about a week and when it started to dry out the mould set in. Without visiting the house the claims adjuster said there was no reason my parents could not move back into the first floor of the house. The adjuster also said they were backed up with claims so they could not have the house repaired until February 2014. What was most upsetting was the adjuster said there was no reason they could not move back into the house at the beginning of August 2013 though they could not use a fan or air conditioning system just in case there was mould in the vents. Summer time, scorching hot, parents are in their late 70s. What is wrong with Intact's adjusters. Are their clients just a number and their health doesn't matter. I asked the adjuster if he had the vents cleaned and if a test was done on the house to determine if there was mould.
After lots of complaining and contacting the ombudsman's office, the adjuster was replaced. The house was finally fixed back to liveable conditions by May 2014. My parents are no longer with Intact

INTACT is WORST for service!

INTACT commercials - your claims process starts when they get your phone call - but that does not mean they will help you or pay people. It just means they type it in the computer. Then you deal with the adjuster which is trying an experience from HELL! I had the absolute worst experience with this company and my neighbour across the street did too! Our basement flooded due to a water main break. We had top of the line coverage. Adjuster got mad at me and smashed my front door! Put a claim in for that and finally got paid one year later. Adjuster told me he did not like me, and promised to give me a hard time. He sent threatening letters that they were considering denying my claim. He offered me 1/7 the actual cost to repair the damage 2 months of the flood. I had already spent double hiring myown contractors to start repairs, not wanting to wait for the insurance company to take action. I had tenants. The fighting over coverage went on for nearly 6 months and finally I got a cheque for double what he first offered. I said this is not enough to cover all the invoices I submitted and complained to Intact Ombudsman. They did nothing. Then I reported unfair insurance practices, bad faith, to FSCO = Financial Services Commission of Ontario. This forced the matter into ARBITRATION! I recommend this to anyone not satisfied with money the insurance company is trying to get you to accept. Take the money they offer but do NOT sign a final release. Tell them you disagree with their calculation of your loss total. At arbitration, I got to present all the invoices for the actual repairs of the damage (not the adjuster's guesstimate) + lost rent. The whole process took about 9 months, but I finally got nearly everthing I asked for. INTACT gave my neighbour across the street a hard time. After his semi detached home was involved in a fire, it took twice as long for Intact to repair his house compared to the equally affected neighbour nest door. Fire was in January and the neighbour with CAA insurance was back in his house by August. The other neighbour with Intact is still waiting for drywall work to be completed. Estimated re-occupation could be 1 1/2 - 2 years because the approval during the claims process goes at a snails pace at Intact. INTACT SUCKS! Maybe their rate could be cheaper, but the attempts to deny coverage and delays in the claims process do not make it worth the savings! Go for a insurance company with a good reputation for claims processing - even if they charge more. I don't know how some insurance adjusters can look themselves in the mirror each morning after doing such horrible things to claimants - I know they get a bonus for paying out less. It's dirty money. I don't want to profit from other people's misery! SHAME on YOU INTACT Insurance Adjuster!

Water damage Toilet

by JUST SCREWED on Mar 6, 2015

We had water damages a few days ago, they were very quick in sending someone to dry the place ,of course to their advantage to try and tell us that there is no more humidity. Then they send an estimator who claims he has done 6000 claims, acuses us of delibertely breaking the tile in the kitchen around a column that was pouring water galore. Writes down in his estimate ,take out the wood floor in the living room ,and just screw in the sub floor that squeaks, ReALLY !!! We had a contractor come and make an estimate ,and the claim is over 20k they estimated at 10k.Best par about it is that the clown that came to do the estimate is boasting how he had water damage at his house and his insurance company estimated 24 k .He boasted he did his own estimate and the damge was 48k .But he comes to our house and does to the clients he serves ,the same they tried to do with him.A real frustrated pr......k giving a hard time to the customers ,because he thinks he knows it all ,very unprofessional.
