Unreasonable Money Grabbers

by Winnie Lapp Ottawa Ontario on Apr 29, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

I have just cancelled all policies with this company. I had four properties and a tenant package insured with this firm. I also had four automobiles insured with them. There was one claim on a property caused by a tenant who flooded the ceiling in the apartment below. This is the only claim in approx. five years of coverage. During this claim I had to do the emergency work myself as this occurred on a weekend. Once the adjuster did come he was very friendly and quite fine to deal with. However, the damaged caused to the apartment below consisted of a collapsed ceiling kitchen and floor damage which made the apartment unlivable. The contractor was unavailable for 3 months. I had to do the work myself. Next point is that my policy went from $1800.00 per year to almost $7000.00 . There should be a law against this as they are bandits.I am a retired Police Officer and many inmates are far more honest than these people. I cancelled my insurance and had to pay a substantial fee. The co-Operators insurance saved me over $3000.00 and were happy to get my business. This was on just one property. They also cancelled my cottage insurance and tried to charge me a fee to cancel although they were cancelling the policies as they would not insure the cottage without the home, they were charging over $3000.00 a year more for . Insurance companies are out of hand.Their profits are enormous. The consumers need some protection against this behaviour . Politicians talk the talk but really do nothing to help they are just a lip service for these white shirt thieves.

Using flood as an excuse

by Martyupnorth on Jul 31, 2014

I have purchased all my insurance from TD Meloche Monnex since 1994. During that time I have paid $55,762.86 in premiums and have never had a claim. Last year I was shocked when my home insurance premiums went up by 43.8%. I called to complain and was simply told that overall insurance costs were going up because of recent bad weather, notably the flood in Calgary. I didn’t flood, but I understand that insurance is a concept whereby several people pool their resources to spread the risk. I argued at the time that TD Meloche was obviously insuring too many high risk individuals. I naively accepted the increase in premiums.

Now a year has gone by, and I just found out they want to increase my premiums by an additional 24.2%. This is outrageous, especially considering the fact that TD Bank is making over $1 billion/quarter in profits.

I really didn’t feel like they appreciated my business so I decided to shop around. Wow, am I ever glad I did. Everyone I called was cheaper than TD Meloche. I’m sure you’ll argue that I’m getting less coverage. Let me assure you that I spent at least one hour discussing each quote with the prospective insurers, making sure I was getting equivalent coverage.

I decided to give my business to ScotiaLife Financial. My new policy is 41% cheaper than TD Meloche. How is that possible? I can only conclude that TD is trying to take advantage of people by using the flood as an excuse, or they’re simply incompetent and insuring too many high risk clients. Either way I don’t want to do business with them anymore.

TD has managed to totally piss-off a loyal customer of 20 years.

Nutcase

by Roxci on Feb 11, 2019

My neighbour's house burned down and nearly burned my house down. Dealt with an adjuster who told me I should feel bad for my neighbour as they lost their house. She was not at all concerned for me and my family, who had to sleep in a car for a week because they would not find us anywhere to go. I then called her manager to let her know the terrible treatment we received and she didn’t care and she actually YELLED at me. They’re NUTS. I’m still homeless and they’re useless. Don’t buy this insurance.

They were so nasty to us and never called us back. After a few days they had part of basement cleaned up and the other part to stay wet ,it created mold.I had to pay a company to clean the mold. Now the clean up company has my contents which they have not cleaned, asked me to pick it up.I would like an account of what the insurance paid them and they will not call me back. What should I do?

Worst Ever

I had my bank put a deposit onlyrics hold on my account for an unrelated issue thus a payment of mine didn't go through as I was unaware. I had the bank write TWO letters for me stating this as my policy was going to be cancelled for non payment. Customer service department stated as the bank did not specify that it was their error in the letter I got cancelled as I do t have 2000 dollars to pay the full policy (this is after the THIRD rate increase)! Problem is bank can't call it an error when it was on hold to protect me! TD is by far terrible!!! All state is much easier to deal with!

Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.

a bunch of a-holes.

Been with TD for only two years, and my third year renewal came in, and another increase in rates and more limits on sewer backup, and the roof. I question them about this, and its due to recent floods in southern Alberta. I live in northern Alberta.

Two weeks before my third renewal, I cancelled. Now I have to wait 4-6 weeks to get my automatic bank withdraw reimbursed that they already took out for the new renewal.

Also, I've been able to get everything emailed to me in the past, but for some reason, i can't get my home experience claim letter from them, (which I havne't had a claim). It has to be mailed.

I wished I saw this site before I let TD be a bunch of a-holes to me, and screw me around waiting for my reimbursment and claim history for my new insurance company.

Now my new insurance company knows how TD screwed me.

From now on, I will do my best to inform people about how TD operates.

High Premium Minimum Coverage

by HomeOwner on Aug 16, 2014

TD Monnex has consistently raised their premiums but reduced the coverage at the same time.

I filed a claim for water damage caused by a burst pipe and was told someone will contact me the next day. It never happened. I called them repeatedly for a months to no avail. They only contacted me after I threatened to take them to the Ontario Ombudsman.

I stay with TD Monnex only because I was too busy to shop around for another insurance provider.

Terrible, Horrible Experience.

Wow is all I can say, I have not dealt with such unprofessionalism and total disregard for the customer. As most people have said, it is a company that is constantly raising their fees and reducing coverage.I made a house insurance claim , the fisrt agent I spoke to was empathetic to our situation and she made us feel like our insurance company cared and was on top of things.Once we were handed over to an adjuster things started to become unreal, there was a total lack of information and disregard to our phone calls and enquiries. We were told TD was very busy with claims arising from the freezing winter and were referred to an third party agency named Crawford and Crawford to handle our claim. The third party company was as bad as TD, they ignored our concerns and communication was very very bad, in the end we felt helpless as no one would get back to us and when they did we were left with little or no information. They also gave conflicting information and down right lied at times to suit their needs.A complaint to TD which is who I pay my rates to and not this other company did not do much,we felt abandoned by our Insurer so we moved our other insurance products to another insurance company because we felt the terrible experience was not commensurate with our loyalty to TD for many years, four months on our claim is approved but we are still to get our cheque since this Crawford and Crawford company does not seem to know what they are doing and have no respect for clients. I am glad to say I am in good hands now.

Are you a condo unit tenant? Remember that neither your condominium corporations' policy nor your landlord's insurance policy protects you as a tenant (3rd part liability, contents, etc.). If you do not have your own insurance policy, get your condominium insurance quote today.

Great, until you need them!

by Stefano on Apr 14, 2014

TD Insurance can't do enough for you as long as you don't need them. They keep their costs down by not paying claims and delaying payment as long as possible. They use part time adjusters who (conflict of interest anyone?) are in the business of fixing stuff. That way, their anointed adjuster/contractor already has a $20K down payment which allows them to undercut any reputable contractor for the work. That cuts your claim down because they now have their prepaid, lowball estimate to use against you!

This is probably only an issue for people who appreciate quality since you already paid to have quality work done on your house. TD Insurance considers all "labour" to be the same, so if you had work done by skilled craftsmen forget it. They will not pay for professional work when there is a home handyman or amateur available. Amount of coverage or "Platinum/Diamond/Gold/Premium" coverage doesn't matter. They will just not pay and you have zero say in it. Remember, they have sucked money from you for years and you have two choices when it comes to settling you claim. You can either accept their lowballing or you can get nothing. Those are your choices.

Don't be misled by the fact that their website has a section called "Customer Service" and under that is "Complaint Resolution". Those phones are not answered by people -- just leave a message. You could elevate your issue to the loftily-titled "Ombudsman" -- if he's not on vacation or away. He was on vacation when I called, so good luck getting hold of him, and good luck feeling you are going to get any consideration from someone whose paycheck comes from TD!

At the end of the day we would have been further ahead with some other company or even no insurance at all. The key to remember is that insurance companies are in the business of NOT paying. Any claim they can avoid paying is considered to be a success and is rewarded.

Like banks, insurance companies "want to loan you an umbrella, but want it back if it rains".
