After being a BCAA home insurance customer for nearly 30 years, our home was destroyed in a fire. ( BCAA contracts out it’s adjusting to a 3rd party in our area.). We had full replacement insurance for our contents. Our experience has been poor, especially in the area of getting reimbursed for our contents. Without rhyme or reason, they will pay for some things, and not for others, even if such things are on our schedule. We have submitted detailed purchase details as requested for items (same “like, kind, and quality” as we were instructed), including receipts - only to have many not paid for with no explanation. We often don’t get replies to inquiries for several weeks, and tried contacting the assigned BCAA “examiner” for assistance when we were being stonewalled by the adjuster. No help what so ever. Home restoration - BCAA has not held the restoration company accountable to the timeline they promised (we were given a choice of 3 different restoration companies and told that we had the “choice“ to select one, but that BCAA would only go with the lowest bidder). The restoration company we chose proposed a timeline that would have us back in our house 6 months after the home was destroyed. We weren’t back in for almost 17 months. The insurance company has no problem holding it over your head (as a claimant) that you must keep your purchases to a “reasonable” minimum (we were even coached to look for replacement contents at a garage sale. Yet they are not willing to hold a restoration company accountable to a timeline, even though it is costing the insurer thousands of $$$ in additional living expenses to keep us in rental housing while out of our home. I wish that I had engaged a lawyer from the beginning, but being naive, I thought that BCAA would be truly there to help us and that the adjuster was on our side. In hindsight, I should have engaged a lawyer's assistance immediately. Would not recommend this company at all.
We have experienced the worst customer service from a BCAA representative. Melanie C. was absolutely horrible to deal with while trying to negotiate our home insurance. She was rude, extremely condescending, absolutely lacking in professionalism and decorum. Our story is similar to many; inexcusably let our insurance lapse while away and when it was realized we were told BCAA would no longer be able to carry our insurance. Which is fine, it's their policy to cancel for non payment and really, it's not a big deal, we managed to get insurance immediately for the same cost. However, it was the manner in which it was handled by Ms. C. Being BCAA clients for over 10 years, Ms. C. clearly enjoyed giving the bad news and took the opportunity to belittle us with insults in a condescending tone unnecessary for any situation. I have and will continue to make friends and family aware and suggest they use anyone but BCAA. Sad, as we were so pleased with them and has recommended them over the 10-12 years we were with them. I would suggest this representative either be trained in customer service, take an anger management class or be relieved of her duties.
Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.
very friendly knowledgeable staff phoned ahead they had everything set up for me so my stop in office was quick, the formal package was mailed to me quickly and efficient, everything offered was easily understood and explained, no pushy upsales
Because BCAA self-insures, its rates are based upon local issues -- not national or world-wide disasters. The personnel with whom I've dealt are efficient and knowledgeable. With a major claim following a break-in several years ago, the adjusters were most helpful, directing us to the places we needed to go to replace items or to seek evaluations etc. of items which were stolen.
I have one regret it’s not looking and comparing price with other companies which I did recently, I should have done it before! I’m saving about 30% to have the same Insurance and even more, so did other people around me. We just told each other!
I had BCAA for several years, no claims, even got some loyalty points and all. But when I did have a flood in my kitchen. All things changed. I got a contracted claims adjuster that didn't even have my policy. Explained more about what I was not going to get than what I would. Even went as far as telling me to move into my tenants' apartment while they were evacuated. I think that is illegal. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, that all was put on the policy. And now I have to get out because there is asbestos in the walls and I have nowhere to go. All the options I found for accommodations were turned down by the adjuster. It really don't look like they have any intentions to accommodate. Oh, and if you delay, they can depreciate or decline. So with that all being said you would be advised to look around, for me BCAA was not a good choice.

New Year's 2021 we had a fire from an explosion of fondue fuel. In the morning (Jan 1) we contacted BCAA who made sure the process was fast and easy.
Without hesitation, BCAA assigned a claim number and told us to contact the restoration company (Total Restoration) who immediately started work. BCAA also assigned an Adjuster right away and he answered all our questions as the work proceeded. He also tracked our replacement purchases and all compensation payments were prompt.
We had never before needed to make a claim on household insurance, so we started off being worried. BCAA eliminated all worries at the start and throughout the entire restoration process.
BCAA now has a customer for life.
BCAA assigned a third-party adjuster to my Fire loss claim. Within 2 weeks of dealing with this private company, I was continually harassed to get my statement of loss in and if I had found a new place. The individual even went as far as to tell me how much I should spend on my alternate living accommodations.
I bought my policy through BCAA not to be passed off to a third party. BCAA should do a better job at vetting the contractors they use to deal with their clients.
I am a former loyal customer. I have never filed a claim. As a service industry, BCAA is supposed to serve the customer. Their best interest lies in profit and liability. I decided to rebuild my house on my existing property. BCAA harassed me dozens of times to get dates when this will happen. The City of Vancouver does not provide any definite dates. So BCAA went ahead and changed my policy without my authorization. If they have the right to change my policy, I should have the right to cancel. BCAA does not care about the customer's well-being. They care about their liability and profitability.
The added on a bunch of unneeded and unoffered extras to my initial quote without telling me. Made it seem like their "discounts" would be coming off the quoted amount however they were already factored in. Didn't email me the quote as promised. Charged my credit card before I agreed to their terms. Spoke with an assistant manager and manager and both seem to be in on the scam and it took six phone calls to resolve, but I finally got a refund and took my business elsewhere. Bottom line they are out to rip you off at every turn, I can only imagine what a nightmare ordeal it would be if you actually had to deal with a claim through them!
